Since July 7th of 2021 Ive been running a 10900KF with 32gb DRR4 and a 8gb 2080 Super FTW3 Ultra Gaming, and Ive been running 4K at 60 FPS or more. I try to run my systems for a minimum of 5 years....But with the recent advancements in hardware and insane Game requirements like Forspoken requiring a 3080 just for 1440p....I wonder how long I'll be able to run my system before I need to upgrade to a PCIE 5 and DDR5 system. . . ? I have recently dreaded upgrading because I cant off-load old systems so okd hardware that is perfectly good is just sitting around collecting dust...so new systems feel like a waste of money. The high requirements are because of lazy porting/crap optimization. Not because the games have so much features requiring power. Brute forcing with hardware because of an insanely bad optimization is a big no-no in my book. I won't even touch the game and I don't care if it's a masterpiece or not.

I've been dragging over upgrading. Should I upgrade? My present MB is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3192 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s). GPU is a 3080ti. If I upgrade, it'll be the MB with ram increase to 32 along with a new main drive. Ram is 16 at present. The 8700 (non-K) is still a solid CPU, but it would be showing its age from now on. The K-version (I have one) can be overclocked and is slightly better because of it, but also should be considered on the aging side. At 4k and 1440p you can still get away with that CPU for a few more years as it won't be bottlenecking the 3080Ti by too much - maybe 10% tops, depending on game. If you play competitive high FPS games, you could consider a CPU change for those extra frames and much better 0.1 and 1% lows. If you don't look for the maximum frames and best possible smoothness (quite subjective feeling), you can keep rocking the 8700. That's what I plan to do with my 8086k (binned 8700k) - get a 4090 (or at least a 4080) and see how it feels for a year or so, waiting for the DDR5 mobos and RAM to mature a bit more. If I am actually happy with the performance at 1440p, I even might keep the CPU for more than a year still. The CPU bottleneck will technically be big, but as long as it brings 80-144 FPS on max settings (as it should in the games I play), I can live with it. I ran a FX-8320 for 6 years and that is considered a quite crappy CPU even upon its release. It was paired with a 1080Ti for about 15 months, so I know bad bottlenecks and didn't really mind. The 8086k would be nowhere near that bad paired with a 4090.

If there're any freezes, etc, it's mostly the game acting up. However, I was playing Shadow of the TR recently. The system froze, blue screen and auto reboot. I suspect it could be overheating so I put a small table fan in front and turn it to medium spin to get the air flowing. There were no more freezes. That's why I'm wondering if I should upgrade now than wait. I could wait for another freeze and reboot I suppose. That'll make up my mind. 😄

Or just a random crash out of 1 in a million odds. If you suspect overheating - check up the CPU temperatures. There is HWInfo, MSI Afterburner, RTSS and other tools you can use to have and see stats at any time, even displayed when playing. Overheating can be due to many reasons. One might be clogged up and dusty CPU cooling fan. Clean it up. Or it may not provide enough air anymore - a change might be a good idea. Also - CPU thermal paste might be due for a change. There are other methods - like reducing the max CPU power limit in the BIOS. Usually loses a tiny bit of performance, but can significantly reduce heat.

Check if theres a fur grown on your heatsinks... my first BSOD ever on this machine happened, culprit was nv*.sys and the driver was reset 5 times before STOP happened. I was hit with log. What. Opened the machine and yeaah a lot of fur growing out Shaved it off and temps went back 10C and fan speed from 100% to normal ~70% I thought I had cleaned it year a go

3080ti is still a damned good card, OG. May be worth looking at the rest of the setup, especially the RAM, given how things appear to be heading with soon to release games. If I were in your position, I’d upgrade the base box and just put the 3080ti in the new system. Unless you’re wanting 4K gaming, of course. I changed the GPU last year so I'm not buying another one. 😄 No, I don't want 4k gaming.

Glad I am not the only long term PC builder here. Your system beats PS5 specs: I wouldn't be to worried unless your planning on running Ray Tracing. If that is something you can do without you should be fine. Insane requirements are most likely due to Ray Tracing. In most scenarios if you have a GPU -even a generation older than recommend the game will run. Your CPU may not run smoothly or the fastest but it should run.

Hey, thanks for your post Vanguard. Believe it or not I can run RTX with marginal or no performance impact....I have tried it on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, RTX Detail set on Medium (everything else on Ultra, and VSync is ON)....and at most there is a 3 to 5 FPS difference.
But mostly I leave it off for ensured stability.
It sure does look pretty though...the Pervian Jungle looks so REAL! But I can live without the added realism in favour of 200% stability in performance.

Believe it or not I can run RTX with marginal or no performance impact... You can run "certain" RTX effects with marginal or no performance impact. RTX implementation varies from game to game. It can be just some reflections in one game to a full blown RTX rays, reflections, shadows, sound, etc in another game. If you try Portal RTX on Medium settings, you will find the performance hit to be anything but marginal.

[That's what I plan to do with my 8086k (binned 8700k) - get a 4090 (or at least a 4080) and see how it feels for a year or so, waiting for the DDR5 mobos and RAM to mature a bit more. The RTX 4090 definitely requires a rather fast CPU to drive. Even I'm hitting the CPU bottleneck with my Ryzen 9 5950X (which is considerably faster than the 10900K/11900K) at 1440p. Unless you're gaming at 4K, you definitely need something like a 13th-gen Intel or a 7000-series Ryzen desktop CPU to fully take advantage of the 4090.

That's if you want all the possible performance right away. But I don't feel the need for that. A 4090 will easily double or triple my current performance and will remain strong for the next 6+ years. Meanwhile I will upgrade the CPU at some point and gain once again. But I won't use anything current, probably will wait for a couple more CPU gens that can make the 4090 the clear bottleneck.

Just wanted to let you know a latest gen CPU is needed to fully utilize the 4090. That's how powerful this GPU is. The good thing about the 4090 is that it is also very efficient despite people love to quote the 600 watt power draw. If you're bound by anything other than the 4090 (like the CPU, frame rate limit, or just the game), the 4090 will only draw as much power as it's needed. Frame to frame, the RTX 40-series draw less power than the RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX. I'm playing older game like the GTA V while the 4090 only uses 100-200 watts. This GPU can drive an ancient game like Deus Ex while in idle using only 30 watts. Even in Cyberpunk 2077, it uses between 200-350 watts. That's about 50 to 100 watts less than my 3090. So you don't need a 1200 or 1500 watt PSU. You just need a lot of luck to find one for MSRP.

SOTTR is one of the first RT implemented games if I remember correctly so it is more lenient on performance drain due to what little is being ray traced. Also SOTTR is a well optimized game. I would NEVER chance using RT in a FALLOUT game!

For you EVGA fanboys... Merry Christmas: Yeah, I saw that video a couple days ago. It's very interesting to see how they repair those video cards. Fun fact, companies like Acer, Asus, Asrock, Gigabyte, MSI, and G.Skill are all Taiwanese. Even EVGA do most of their R&D in Taiwan despite being an American company. I really miss Taiwan and the food. Last time I went there was for Computex 2018. Beautiful island and beautiful people.

I only buy parts that are made in Taiwan.....I stay far away from things that say "made in China" because they're historically....crap. Yeah, I saw that video a couple days ago. It's very interesting to see how they repair those video cards. I really miss Taiwan and the food. Last time I went there was for Computex 2018. Beautiful island and beautiful people. All the best stuff is made in Taiwan. I only buy parts that are made in Taiwan.....I stay far away from things that say "made in China" because they're historically....crap. To play on a conversation between Marty McFly and Doc Brown: "No wonder the circuit failed, it says "made in Japan Taiwan." "What're you talkin' about, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan Taiwan." The term of phrase should be made in Crapland. It is what stuff from there usually amounts to.

TL/DR: The cards failed, because they were second hand cards used for mining. Apparently they were stored inappropriately, which caused moisture to build up. Once the cards were powered up, water expanded and destroyed the chips.

So my dad and I have the same monitor, the BENQ PD3200U, a great monitor, we both really like it...But two years ago when I was testing Dad's monitor to see if I liked it before I bought the same one....I accidentally dropped it. The plastic casing and frame was noticeably cracked and over the last two years there has been a growing amount of light bleeding from the left side of the panel and now it is pretty bad, and only getting worse.
Dad had mentioned that he was looking to buy a new monitor to replace his, and since he likes the monitor so much....I have offered to sell him mine for $400.00. It's in perfect condition, but it is four years old- hence the family discount, but I do think that 400 is still a good price and a fair price. One that we can both live with.
I would then buy a new monitor to replace the one I am selling my dad. The monitor I am seriously considering is the BENQ MOBIUZ EX3210. 32 inches, 4K 10-bit IPS panel 144hz Refresh Rate, 98% Colour Gamut, 1ms RT and HDRi600. THe only downside for me is that it is native AMD Freesync Pro, not Nvidia's G-Sync. But the one monitor I had with G-Sync was a flaming heap of trash from the day I bought it (the ACER HK3321). So I am just as well to stay away from Gsync or Freesync....And I don't think I will need either given the 144hz refresh rate and 1 ms Reponse Time, which I'm sure my RTX 2080 Super Ultra Gaming GPU can more than handle.
So this BENQ MOBIUZ EX3210U is 1249.99 at both CanadaComputers, Best Buy and Amazon.ca but with the sale of my PD3200U I'll only need to pay 849.99.
I think I will buy it from Amazon because this is the only spot it is in stock. I am hoping to buy it for my birthday, which will be just in time for Jedi Survivor!
