This thread prompted me to start a new campaign after a long break.
My best advise is to really try to role play your empire, rather than just do whatever seems optimal at a given time. Obviously circumstances will dictate things to some extent, but try not forget who you are playing as.
So I'm currently playing as nightmarish future EU that has complete control of the Earth (which we now generally just call Brussels) and is trying to spread it's tendrils across the galaxy. I'm basing it mainly on what I take to be hardline Brexiters' ideas about what the EU is rather than my own, and am having much fun with it. So it all starts with smiles and others of trade when dealing with my Commissioners, while they plan how to bring you into the fold, by force if necessary (it usually is). Separatists of course are dealt with harshly, by my Bariner class Destroyers, Verhofstadt class Cruisers and Juncker class Battleships.
Next campaign, I might go for a Trump dynasty empire. Naturally, the word Trump will have to feature excessively in the naming- Planet Trump, New Trump, New New Trump, Bigly New Trump, etc.
I always have to play as humans though, otherwise I can't really relate my future dystopias to real world politics.

In celebration of three years Stellaris is free this weekend on Steam. For those that haven't played this game yet now is the prefect time to get your feet wet.

Played it a bit. Might buy it. Definitely a good 4X game, complex, but not intimidating in mechanics and UI.
I got to maybe a midgame. Every species I met disliked me even though I am a Star Trek Federation angel. Thought I got a good strength, but met two species that were "Overwhelming" to me. One of those had a tiny Empire, so no idea how can they be that strong. Unless their "Guardian" status means they are ancient enough or something.
The other powerful Empire started wars and already destroyed a smaller opponent. I got loads of refugees. Uplifted some spiders. They love the Tomb worlds and I had 7 of those right next to Earth. Klendatu 1-7. Hope I don't regret it 😁
Found an AI ship right at game start, he joined my fleet and then I died laughing when he also won the Presidential elections. So far has been reelected constantly for 5-6+ or more times.
Had half of the human population converted to another form of humanoid "Warrior" species through a retro virus. I knew it was coming, but didn't have the heart to stop the event since two of the three options were to execute the scientist involved. We are the fucking Federation. We don't execute anybody. I did an ages long research project that halted important discoveries, just to peacefully coexist with a nonsentient space amoebas. I could have just blasted them. So yeah, now my peace loving Empire has a strong militaristic faction. Will be interesting.

New Story Pack DLC was just announced.
Looks interesting as it was always kinda silly how my excavations of precursor empires didn't result in any particular advances aside from a flat engineering/society/physics bonus.
EDIT - From the official Paradox forum post:
Uncover the ruins of long-dead civilizations in Relic Worlds to piece together the story of their rise and eventual downfall. Mine their derelict cities and ships to unearth the truth, discover powerful relics and harness them for your own empire’s ambitions.
Stellaris: Ancient Relics includes:
Said Ancient Relics: Collect and acquire valuable relics in your adventures as rewards for overcoming major crises or after completing a dig at an archaeological site and solving the chapters. Each relic gives significant benefits to your empire to aid in your interstellar escapades.
Those Who Came Before: Encounter clues about two extinct Precursor civilizations, the Baol and the Zroni, the former a sprawling hivemind of plantoids, the latter some of the most the most powerful psionics to have ever lived. Players can investigate these home systems to understand who they were and, more importantly, what one can learn from their demise.
Relic Worlds: Once filled with teeming life, these Relic Worlds now lie dead, replete with desolate ruins and dormant mysteries. Players can excavate guaranteed archeological sites on these worlds to explore these remnants and bring to light powerful relics and artifacts.
Dig In: Hit the dirt on a variety of enigmatic and alien worlds with more archeology sites available for your empire to study… or plunder. Each site begins a story with between one and six chapters to investigate. Retrace the history to discover artifacts and relics that can be boons to your empire.
Matter of Artifacts: Learning from history is much more than parables and antiques, it can often be the key to understanding one’s own place in the galaxy. Utilizing archaeological research, discover Minor Artifacts, a new resource type which can help empower one’s empire.

The guardians will attack if you settle a Gaia planet they consider theirs, I think. The planets name will be obvious, some flowery name like eternal peace. On the other hand, if you had advanced AI set in the starting options, you may meet a regular empire that is just way ahead of you. Oh and that event, I think, is only for humans. Worm that waits I think?

Basically every time one of your science ships enters into a black hole system there is a chance of the initial starting event firing. Just keep resending your exploration vessels through such systems if you want to try and force it to happen. My megacorp run turtle species had that trigger for them and they wound up submitting to the "Worm in Waiting"

Same as what humans get, or some other reptilian look?

Same as what humans get, or smother reptilian look? Your species' new 'aggressive form' is determined by your species' type. Humans will get an appearance based on one of the mammalian aliens while my turtles got a reptilian one. I'm not sure if the new look is randomly determined but the result always tends towards the more 'evil' looking side. Of course if your initial appearance is already fairly aggressive looking you won't get as much of a change when it happens.
