It is a couple weeks old. I don't consume the forum like a can of Coke - I would puke. Therefore, I don't see every topic or post immediately or at all. Simping... Go ahead kid, I feel like this is just the start of your tantrum. Be aware it will only make you look more foolish.

How you consume the forum doesn't make a difference to how old my post is. Do you call up friends to rebut something they said two weeks ago? Even if I did "chuck a tantrum", my emotional state, which you've decided for yourself based on nothing, is irrelevent to the validity or lack thereof of my argument. You position me as "emotional" and yourself as apparently not, but you're the one who responded to me, apropos of nothing, and now you rely on tone-policing, fallacy and personal attacks to discredit my points, with which you did not engage. It will work for you, because this forum is populated by a bunch of people who love to employ all those same tactics, esepcially when it comes to attempting to silence minority concerns, but attacking my supposed emotional state wouldn't hold up in any other arena. And I now know to automatically disregard anything you say on any topic.

Wait until you all find out about the ASOIAF influences in Dragon Age (at least in Origins).
EDIT: Getting back to the topic at hand, I'm lowkey digging that witch hat. It's not really something we've seen before, but it looks cute.

Maybe it's because I avoid the stuff, but are Tolkien/D&D pastiches even a common thing in print fantasy nowadays? I got the impression they peaked in the 80s and have been steadily on the decline ever since. Dragon Age is basically what you get if a D&D novelization had sex with ASoIaF, sure, but video games are decades behind the curve.

Dragon Age is basically what you get if a D&D novelization had sex with ASoIaF, sure, but video games are decades behind the curve. I work in a public library, and I see a lot more stuff that, judging from the pulp-style covers and blurbs, follows more in the vein of Conan the Barbarian and John Carter of Mars, but I never saw any of this when I was working in a bookstore, or when I go shopping in bookstores. Libraries seem to be an entirely unique ecosystem, I see all sorts of shit every day (not just books, but film too) that I have never come across in any other context, lol. I honestly have no idea who the "big names" are in fantasy these days, N.K. Jemisin? Maybe? Brandon Sanderson I assume. I don't read much fantasy anymore because I got sick of being expected to keep up with absurdly long series. Even trilogies I find offputting now, and I wish more authors would do standalone novels. Fantasy has definitely moved on from Tolkien, though. When I was working in a bookstore and being expected to read often in order to make recommendations, I was able to find lots of stuff that satisfied my criteria of being different and interesting. The names people are bringing up in response to my posts are not people that I would have considered to be relevant, even six years ago, but I have no idea how popular China Mieville, Jeff VanderMeer or Zen Cho are, so maybe I should hold my tongue.

Dragon Age is basically what you get if a D&D novelization had sex with ASoIaF, sure, but video games are decades behind the curve. Depends on what you consider "print fantasy". Because a solid argument can be made that several isekai manga/light novels take heavy inspiration from DnD/Tolkein. Think Overlord, Goblin Slayer, Shield Hero, etc. But that relies in on turn what components you consider to be derivative of Tolkein or DnD. Is it the levels? Class systems? The monster hierarchy? Party mechanics? Elves-as-tree-huggers? They all have similar tropes, in any case. But then the same could be said of any fantasy work...

A gentle reminder that - as per the post from mousestalker above, this thread is for discussion of the concept art and how you feel the look and style may end up being incorporated in DA4. It is not for debates about whether or not my Fantasy Author Dad could beat up your Fantasy Author Dad. Thanks.

It is not for debates about whether or not my Fantasy Author Dad could beat up your Fantasy Author Dad. Alright, alright. But he totally would (whoever he is). About the concept art: last time Bioware borrowed aesthetically from Blade Runner they made their most popular game. This feels like a return to basics. I have to admit that, whatever its flaws, ME2 is the most sleek and stylish of the Bioware catalog. This makes me wonder if there'll also be a big "urban" focus in DA4, as supposed to the endless wilderness of DA:I.

I mean the concept art we have seen makes it highly unlikely, but I honestly wouldn't be upset at all if the game took place in JUST Minrathous with a few out-of-city forays here and there for variety. Between the city itself and what are likely the sewers/ruins below the streets, enough content can certainly be made available since red lyrium, cultists, corrupt magisters, and Solas are in the mix. It could be like Kirkwall on steroids. But as it stands, I think we may be nation-hoping again like in DAI. Although this time around we would be visiting capitols and other major cities. Which...i'm not too sure how I feel about that. If this is just a series of DAI-like Winter Palaces and Val Royeaux Bazaars then I don't have high hopes for it. But maybe they will surprise me.

In my ideal DA4 world, we’d see 3 fleshed out big cities, several smaller settlements, and maybe 3 large open locations. I do not need DAI’s ‘10 zones of fetch quests’, or DA2s repeating corridor city. I really REALLY hope they’ve used all their pre-prod and development time constructively.

It is 20 years now since Baldur's Gate series but that showed they could do big cities well and proper day/night cycles, so if they can just translate the pretty pictures into reality...... is that too much to ask?

I'm kinda expecting Minrathous to be a bit like Novigrad from the Witcher 3 in it's scale and complexity. Any less than that and I will honestly be a bit disappointed. D:

D: Novigrad was one of a kind to be honest, I just hope that DA focus on quality and less scale. I think this would be a good opportunity for Bioware to wow us though, because we haven't really had a massive city to explore in the DA universe that has as much detail as they've described in the lore, and Minrathous is the biggest and oldest city in Thedas. There is a lot of history to reveal there so I think it makes sense story-wise and lore-wise to flesh it out as much as possible. I know what you mean though. I'd be happy with more quality quests and less filler overall, like the shards or astrariums in DAI which felt more like work than fun gameplay.

Maybe this is because I play a lot of other genres of games and as a result see more big-budget stuff, but Novigrad didn't seem that special to me. Big cities that seem alive but then it turns out you can't interact with most of the people aren't so uncommon.

I think it's interesting that Novigrad always comes up as a comparison. The Assassin's Creed cities do an even better job for me, they're large, sprawling and positively buzzing with life. Other than constantly stepping on chickens and running over people while on horseback, they're my fave game metropolis. Which reminds me, dear Bioware, please let me climb these buildings.

In my ideal DA4 cities, there would be a lot of interesting, colorful NPCs and quests in the environment that really bring to mind the city for you. People you can interact with, save from danger, put into danger, cheat out of their money, get cheated by, tell you history of the area, etc. Give them personality beyond being masses of polygons that just happen to stand around to fill space.

Something they could maybe try is having randomized, repeating mini-events, like how in the Spider-Man games, when moving from point A to point B, you get alerts about crimes in progress and can intervene or not.
