I'm a few hours into ME1 right now and I have to say I think some opportunities were missed - and I say that even though ME1 is probably my favorite game of the trilogy. Certainly there are plenty of reasons to praise the ME1 remaster - the graphics look really good, above all. But I was hoping to see some small changes that don't seem to be there unless I'm missing something. For example: - Even though it seemed like most people agreed that ME3 had the best speech check system, with Shepard's overall reputation bar opening up dialogue choices instead of investment in Charm/Intimidate (ME1) or accumulation of specifically Paragon/Renegade points (ME2), it looks like we're back to Charm/Intimidate. Among other things, this means delaying going to Feros if I don't want to fail the absurdly high speech check with Ethan Jeong. Why did Bioware go back to this? They obviously realized it would benefit from a change, or else they wouldn't have changed it in ME3.
- Shepard's N7 nametag and arm stripe still disappear the moment you put on any non-Onyx armor, unlike in the later games when you could make modifications to your base armor and still keep the N7 paraphernalia.
- Shepard and the squad walk around the Citadel (and I'm presuming other hubs too) in full weapons and armor instead of dressing like they do when they're on board the Normandy. Again, it seems like Bioware realized at some point that it made sense to change this, and from what I remember the change was positively received when ME3 came out.
- I was sort of expecting the combat to feel a little more ME2/ME3-ish, whereas instead it just feels like ME1 combat with better graphics. Also, is Shepard now able to use all the weapons without a huge decrease in effectiveness for the ones where (s)he doesn't have specialized training? I thought the answer was supposed to be yes, but I shot a Geth Trooper on Eden Prime with a shotgun (I'm playing as a Sentinel) at fairly close range and it didn't seem to do that much damage.
- This isn't new to the remaster, but I gather that DLCs still trigger automatically at various points in the game rather than being able to choose when to activate them like you could with, for example, the Fallout 3/New Vegas DLCs. I don't know if I can get around this by moving them out of their folders on PC - I guess I'll have to try it when I get to ME2 and see if the game crashes.
I get that Bioware seems to have been taking a pretty conservative approach to what this remaster really means, i.e. an upgrade of the original games without many do-overs. But even though I'm enjoying playing it with the upgraded graphics, I'd say there are some missed opportunities here.

I think all of these items are way out of scope for a remaster. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the amount of changes they did make to ME1 - the first time I’ve been pleasantly surprised by anything Bioware has done in a long while.

Super annoyed they didn't find a way to increase the active hot key power limit in one. But again maybe they didn't have the buttons.

I wanted a way of tracking the planets and systems you visited in ME:1, in the same manner as 2 and 3. Never Happened though. I have to break out the old pen and paper, same as ever.

Yeah I never played on consoles before and was hit with a 2x4" plank when trying to use the powers in realtime and not pausing... but the button limit. I havent paused in fights for 10 years or so.

Sadly what didn't change is ME3 I/we cannot holster our weapons' I'd forgotten about that one (and haven't gotten to ME3 yet). That's annoying. You'd think that if they were able to add a walk function to DAI after the initial release, they could have found a way to let us holster weapons in ME3. It always felt awkward at Grissom Academy and the fuel station when Shepard would run around talking to people while aiming a gun at them. Does anybody know, programming-wise, just how deeply they dug into the games' "structures" in this remaster? I'm assuming that they didn't just reprogram everything from scratch while keeping the original audio. If it was basically just better graphics superimposed onto the existing programming structure, then I can understand why some of these things probably wouldn't get changed.

What didn't change? How great it is to be working with Cerberus. The Honorable Mr. Rupert Gardener, the greatest chef in the universe, making his calamari gumbo. The scene between Harbinger and Shepard in Arrival. One of the best scenes in the trilogy. How great it is hearing Javik talk smack to the asari on Thessia.

On a lighter note, I was pleased that ending a conversation with Tali is still amusingly awkward.
Shepard: "I want to talk about something else." Tali: "Like what?" Shepard: "I should go."

Here's a small thing that didnt change - The mummified salarian on Mavigon still looks like a container rather than a dead salarian... back to RP'ing that this particular salarian is still locked in his coffin.

They removed weapon restrictions in ME 1. They were not present in the original ME 3. But they kept them in ME 2. What bullcrap. I can be a vanguard sniper in ME 1 and ME 3 but not ME 2? And yes I'm aware that I get weapon training in the late game, but that's not the point. Should have had that in the beginning so I could snipe those pesky Scions on Horizon before the "defend the tower" fight starts

- Shepard and the squad walk around the Citadel (and I'm presuming other hubs too) in full weapons and armor instead of dressing like they do when they're on board the Normandy.
That's just the way the Citadel was designed for 1 and 2, to be honest. In 1, it's a combat zone in some areas, and you have to be fully equiped to deal with threats, like Saren's assassins. In 2, it makes sense having them because of the modular design, so as in a RP perspective, the crew doesn't need to return to the Normandy to grab their gear if they want to go to a combat zone for Garrus' Loyalty Mission. It even makes sense from a story perspective, since the Citadel is a hub that reflects on your choices from the previous game. So, that Turian on Rodam Expeditions will comment about how selling weapons or carrying them around is limited to high-level personnel or people with permits, Avina will talk about pro-gun protesters, Joram Talid pushes for the Citadel to be more secure, and so forth. Many of those are consequences of you saving or not the Council, and reflect on how people see your Shepard that carries lots of guns around, especially that guy on Rodam Expeditions.

The Citadel is still really empty. I didn't really expect BioWare to liven the place up with some expanded crowd density, but I did hope a little bit.

The incessant whining of Grunt to "hit the keystone" during his loyalty quest. Also the super fast time you have during his loyalty quest to pick up items such as medigel kits or heavy ammo after the thresher maw fight and the Uvenk Gatatog fight.
Edit to add:
Also Captain Enyala saying to Miranda "I was just waiting for you to finish getting dressed. Or does Cerberus really let you whore around in that outfit?" even though I changed Miranda to full armor outfit LOL

Very important - Shifty Looking Cow still alleviates Shepard of a few credits if engaged in a short conversation on Ontarom.

Or have Shepard in the cutscenes hold the weapons that I actually equipped and not the default starter set.

If you save the Council he states he would name his firstborn child after Shepard.
If you killed the Council he doesn't like Shepard and after you buy his stuff he tells you to get the hell out of the store. I THINK he can even refuse to sell you anything in his shop if you really piss him off during the dialogue exchange but it's been a quite while since I played a pure renegade so I'm NOT 100% sure about that so don't hold me to that.

The forged id's quest on the Citadel is still bugged, in that the journal doesn't update if you use the "Could've fooled me" option when first talking to the asari.

It's not really an issue, more like something I just realized.
The music that plays during the romance scene with Shaira the Consort in ME1 is the same music that plays during Thane's death scene in ME3. The track is just slowed down in ME3.
Just a surprising find. I always thought the music during Thane's death was only in ME3. Seems like the trilogy keeps finding ways to surprise us!

Another I always think of is the first time trying to expose Saren but the Council sides with him.

That annoying side quest on Tarith, N7 Blood Pack Communications Relay quest hasn't changed - at least the squadmates are neither here nor there when you need them. They were still running away from the klixen instead of helping me kill them
