OK, the part about doing something different with an inexperienced hero had me laugh out loud. Ummmm, so Ryder will be like EVERY Dragon Age protagonist then? LOL. Yeah, totally new idea there. Almost all RPGs I can think of have always told the story of a nobody who rises to greatness. I am baffled about this statement. The industry has not evolved out of the action hero sterotype. Especially not shooters/action games. There have always been these two different approaches in RPGs! Both are power fantasies. The only time Bioware did something different was with Hawke, and most people hated playing a character who fails to save the day. After the doormat of an inquisitor I am actually in favor again of somebody like Shepard. Somebody who acts like a leader and knows what they're doing. Not a clueless puppet of an organization where you just do what the advisors tell you. The entire game I kept wondering why everybody admired my inquisitor so much. Every other character was more interesting than my own. To me Shepard is the greatest videogame hero of all time. Absolutely badass but also kind and smart. A truly inspiring story that still moves me to tears years later. However, if Ryder turns out to be like Hawke, I'll be happy. Hawke was a GREAT tragic hero. So if the family story is modeled after DA2, that's awesome. If Andromeda is Inquisition in space, then not cool at all. Visually the 4K demo looked EXACTLY like the DAI caves with some shiny bling bling added. If they want me to get excited about exploration, they need to show something actually new and alien. But maybe that's just me. However, I have no doubt that MEA will look stunning. DAI was a beautiful-looking game and I DID enjoy just exploring the maps immensely even if there was little to do. If they really added "meaningful exploration" this time, it will be a big step up from DAI. And I can't wait to get out there and see it all for myself. Despite my conflicted feelings about an ordinary person as the protagonist, I really really like the idea of a group of explorers. I could easily spend an entire game just doing that. Meeting new alien species, learning their cultures. All that accompanied with a truckload of funny banter. I don't need a threat like the reapers. I'm actually really worried about a repeat of the evil machine/alien race. DA2 showed that small personal stories can work just as well. In fact, DA2's story was far superior to that of DAI, and maybe even DAO imo. No cartoon villain please or a reaper clone. I would totally dig a story that is centered around survival in an unknown world. Building stettlements (and cities!), dealing with new flora and fauna. The psychological aspect of it all. Being away from everything you know, leaving everything behind. Nothing will be like expected. Dealing with setbacks, maybe even facing starvation. Sort of like the American frontier story set in space. With all the cowboy stuff from the first trailer that would make sense. There doesn't need to be a massive threat for the game to be interesting. The refugee theme of DA2 would make sense as well. However, refugees are the opposite of explorers. They are an unwanted burden on an existing society. Explorers claim new "free" land. So mixing both is tricky but definitely doable. Andromeda will not be uninhabited. Maybe Ryder and the others will have to beg for food and shelter somewhere at some point? I really hope they get the balance between story and exploration right...

*warpity snip* LITERALLY FROTHING WITH EXCITEMENT. JEANNE-LUC RYDER GO! I wish I could be as optimistic as you Still, the info sounds good (hopefully the game will live up to it), and +1 for dancing Picard. Hopefully at some point we'll get to make contact with an alien vessel and introduce ourselves like: This is Captain (unfortunately can't say first name out-loud) Ryder of the Alliance starship Tempest/SSV Tempest/etc. *falls asleep* Heh, I won't deny that there's every possibility Andromeda's 'exploration' will pretty much just be shardhunting with a Mako... But that quote, right there, is exactly what I wanted to hear. No detail released about the game so far - nothing from any of the trailers or other interviews - has gotten me as excited as the implications of that one line--and that's speaking as someone who thought the Tempest was so cool they went and photoshopped together a dedication plaque for it. (Using a pre-made template, admittedly.) The suggestion that, when the Andromeda devs talk about ''exploration", they're talking about the sort of stuff Picard and company got up to - the stories they experienced, the people and cultures they made contact with - and not just your standard open-world, 'Hey, see that mountain over there? You can walk/drive up it if you like, and there might be a loot chest, with perhaps a short note if you're lucky.' is, quite sincerely, about the best news I could possibly have hoped to come across. Also I've been workshopping my, 'This is Captain Ryder (god I wish we could have a first name) of the _________ starship Tempest' speech ever since we got confirmation on the names of our ship and protagonist.

There is no "evolution" or "progress" in such approach. That's just marketing word-play on contrast with ME.

I think they should've just said that Ryder is different from Shepard (which is fine by me) and not that it's some kind of new approach in the industry. One thing though, the Warden and Hawke were different from Ryder, or at least on what they're saying about Ryder. They do have in common being relatively inexperienced, but both DA characters were considered in game to be quite talented. In every origin this is quite noticeable (Cousland being twice as skilled as more experienced men, Amell/Surana being the mate with a record Arrowing, etc.) Flemeth mentioned the feat of slaying an ogre and and that there's something special in him/her. From what they're saying, Ryder seems on starting on a somehow lower level in the talent side. Though it's too early to say, as well as on its role in the game.
I have to say, if they're doing a trilogy, I would quite like having a slow rise in ranking and reputation. Shepard is quite godlike figure already at the end of ME, and the three DA heroes all become famous in one game. I would prefer if they don't make Ryder being considered the second coming of Shepard in just one game.

They are suspiciously evasive on this at the moment, so it's quite possible that ME:A is stand alone game. Which could mean that Ryder will get from inexperienced to Second Shepherd in one game. I'd be glad to be wrong on this one.

This feels like a real alien world againMass Effect 3 largely played out in your fairly classic space stations. That was okay, but a bit too predictable: here is a bridge for my sniper, there’s some more room to drop a singularity. Everyone dies, the end. It was a good game, but lacked the secret, alien-feeling worlds of the first Mass Effect. Andromeda is now ready to bring that back in its first ever demo, which starts out in a base of a still unknown alien race. Maybe it's the Remnants, maybe it’s not; it's definitely a very advanced culture with high-tech at the core of their structures. It feels and looks great because cool metal and concrete (or whatever material these aliens might use) meet organic plants that spread through the entire bunker. Ferns with thick arms bust through the walls. They come in all forms and shapes, above and below. Am I being pointlessly optimistic here?

I'm thinking they're talking about the tech demo from the Sony thing.

I'd be glad to be wrong on this one. Well, if it's one game they don't necessarily have to make Ryder be like Shepard in the endgame. They can tone it down the status he can reach. But yes, it'd be disappointing if they're going to develop Ryder as you fear.

Once again, I expect daddy issues to be a huge theme in MEA. Except that this time you have these issues. Maybe even brother/sister issues. On the other hand your squadmates will have to get themselves some other kinds of problems.

Fans who love headcanons were disappointed by Hawke's set personalities, they wanted to make their own and by having set personalities it's harder to make their stupid headcanons. so that's why Inquisitor is such a bland protagonist. Well, at least I think that's the reason. I hate headcanons, because it's like making up excuses for developer's lazinnes, lack of creativity and fear of making something substantial. ,,Ouh Inquisitor is a blank-slate protag to give us more freeeedom!''. By having him among such diverse cast, his emptiness was very noticeable.

I like the sounds of being a scientist and diplomat. If the worlds really are more than combat zones and fetch quests, it could be really good. Make me care about the world, the people. Let me explore the culture and develop relationships. Then the combat means a lot more than just "shoot the enemy".

I am happy to read that 'exploration' and 'alien' being used, though I really hope that this means that we actually get more of a non-human element to the games rather than just a pretty vista with some floating rocks in the back ground "Oh sooooo alien there." I want to see Mass Effect: Andromeda being capable of giving us a setting that is more than our human way of looking at things. People are excited about the possibility of being like Captain Picard in Star Trek, but I don't want that to mean that we get to go see humans in rubber masks and then show them how much more "evolved" and "superior" humanity is. I want to see a narrative that allows us to see things that are wholly non-human and quite happy at being so, and for the writing not try and make it out like such a state is wrong or evil.

So all this really means is instead of playing Master Chief, we're Gordon Freeman instead.
