This poll is for new players only, i.e. I have not cast a vote here. Pick your choice, but feel free to name your second choice or honorable mentions.
Veteran players can comment no worries.
I just want to see what the new guys picked.

I'm not a new player, but when I was, I picked engineer for my first playthrough. I'm playing an engineer again now. It is the very best class

Even though soldier is my main class to play for my main Shepard, I have yet to play as one in the remaster. Anyways. The class I chose for my first playthrough was adept

Way back in the day Adept was my first PT because my teenaged mind went *Space wizard, Jedi, cool*...and then I hated it. Then Vanguard which was OK and then Soldier where I fell in love with...well the soldier.

Back in 2008, a warez version was installed first.. I clicked around fast to get into the game, so I think I took soldier (the other ones didnt make any sense fast) the game started, I was hopping on this 'train' on Eden Prime when I saw it... The desktop. Cracked game had crashed and crashed over and over at that precise same point. Few days later I bought the game and I think I chose soldier again. I also didnt use much powers at all EDIT: Why warez? Well there were no demos, and I deleted the ware version back then when bought the game or didnt buy.

I'm fairly new to the series. For years my BioWare choice of games were the Dragon Age games. But for my first playthrough of all three games I chose Soldier. Because I figured they were the easy class, which for the most part was true. But there some parts in all three games that were rough. I just completed my second playthrough of ME1 and am now playing ME2, and for this playthrough I chose Sentinel.

As a long-time veteran of the series, I chose not to vote. But way back in the day, I chose the default Shepard, which meant the default Soldier John Shepard. For the Legendary Edition, I chose... Soldier again for my first playthrough, to test out the changes to shooting Immunity. It is the easiest class to play and allows you to learn some of the game mechanics through your squadmates. The next playthroughs where you choose different classes is where you can really start to dig into the game mechanics and vary your choices.

I also chose not to vote as a long-time player of the OT. Back when I started, I chose Infiltrator as my first playthrough, based on my preference for using sniper rifles in other games. My favorite class, though, is engineer. For MELE, I started out with a soldier since I was made aware that, unlike the OT, squad mates could be used to unlock the various bonus powers.

I was confused by the classes at first, too. Coming from Dragon Age and other fantasy games, I really wanted the classes to be analogs to fighter, rogue, wizard, etc. and it doesn't really work like that. I think I only picked engineer in the end because it seemed nerdy.

RPG's are daunting for first timers. I just meant from my perspective since I've been playing rpg's for years, but even with that I had trouble in ME1 with understanding what the classes do, and what all the powers mean. So if I was confused I can imagine how it must've been for you. I understand also what you mean by letting the computer handle the leveling for companions.

I think I only picked engineer in the end because it seemed nerdy. Yeah that was why I picked soldier it sounded pretty straight forward. Also it didn't help that I never played a futuristic rpg, aside from Fallout all of the rpg's I played are set during classical or medieval times. So I was very confused with ME1 in terms of classes.

Veteran here, so no vote. But back in the day, I started with Infiltrator as "canon". I found it to be very robust in most situations, with few real weak spots. Moved later to biotic classes due to (generally) superior control on higher difficulties.

I didn't vote since I'm definitely not a new player.
My first playthrough in 2007 was a Soldier. I only reached level 43, if I recall correctly, and missed some stuff.
I played Adept (+assault rifle) on my second playthrough and was forever after a fan of biotics. I mostly played Vanguard (+singularity) and Infiltrator (+hacking or medicine) once I "got gud" at building characters.
It's hard to say what my favorite class in the trilogy is now, as they all offer a great experience. For ME1, though, it's definitely Sentinel. The classes were far less unique in ME1, and Sentinel offers the most complete package.

Non-voting player here.
My very first playthrough I was torn between Infiltrator and Adept. Coming from KOTOR I found force powers to be a ton of fun but was worried the class would be too squishy, especially on my first ever attempt, so I went with Infiltrator and was basically scoping everything for fear of being ambushed.
Went with Adept on the second playthrough, then Vanguard third.
Currently just started ME2 and am playing as a Sentinel

In both my playthroughs of ME1 I played with classic leveling, but I can never reach level 60. The highest I reach is 54. Has anyone ever reached level 60 in OT or LE?

In both my playthroughs of ME1 I played with classic leveling, but I can never reach level 60. The highest I reach is 54. Has anyone ever reached level 60 in OT or LE? In ME1, you have to re-import your ME1 file save back into a new ME1 NG+ (new game plus) playthrough in order to reach Level 60. If you do absolutely everything in ME1, the highest you'll get in one playthrough is Level 57/58. Aso, a very first playthrough earns XP at a slower rate than subsequent playthroughs (since an XP bonus is attached to one of the completion achievements). Therefore, a first ever playthrough will likely cap out at are Level 54/55, if you do find everything (all minerals, crates, and enemies).
The amount of XP it takes to gain each level is exponentially increased so it takes a huge amount of XP to get those last 2 or 3 levels. There is a page on the Wiki that shows the amounts needed.
Bioware did say once that they were adjusting ME1 to make it possible to max out your levels in one playthrough, but they didn't actually accomplish that as far as i can tell (by miscalculation or design... who knows).

Here I thought I explored everything and did every quest. I never reached level's 57/58. Next time I play ME1 I'll reimport the character. Thanks for the help!

Yeah all of the moffer grea texperiences even my leas tfavouriet class Vanguard I love fo rbeing an unstoppable juggernaut of biotic power wit hbot hthe charge and Novaat your disposal Sentinelwith the Jack of al trades capability and tech armour is good fun as well though I don' ttend to pla yVanguard or Sentinel as I fin dSentinel a little too defensive poewr wise and Vanguard tends t oswing too much the other wa yin tha tit's too aggressive but they're still fun to play. The othe rclasses tend to be somewhere in the middle so I find I like playing them more.
