My preference would be a mixture of both ME:1 and ME:2/3 style N7 missions. In other words an handful of optional, barren or wildlife-inhabited planets that could be landed upon and explored via vehicle if the player chose to do so, each of which had some kind of optional objective. Doesn't even need to be combat focussed. What's so wrong with simply cataloguing a new species of creature, or exploring alien ruins? As long as the environments are compelling, unique and well crafted. But also some basic 'land in the shuttle and take out the bad guys' kind of missions too - keep mixing it up, keep it fresh. Put in some interesting alien ships to discover and board, add some environmental hazards or dangerous weather conditions to prepare against. Anyone who has seen Ridley Scott's original Alien movie will remember that harrowing slog on foot to the alien vessel though ferocious winds, with low visibility - imagine that in a game? Each experience needs to be fresh and interesting, with something new to discover. The identical 'mine, tech lab1 or tech lab2' encounters' in ME:1 got old after a while until it felt like a bit of a chore.. for me at least, as did the endless slogging over mountains and gullies, though that was mostly due to quantity rather than quality, as ME:1 is still a classic game. Yeah, stuff like datamined from MEA (Missing Content): bsn.boards.net/thread/14800/me-andromeda-cut-content Check the Planets spoilers... would have been amazing to get.

I hated exploration in ME1 due to the Mako being a piece of shit and having to shoot those stupid Thresher Maws and other enemies with that awful targeting system. The LE made this a little better but for me it was too little, too late.
I loved exploration in MEA due to the Nomad being a lot of fun to drive, with the banter between the team members, and just running over enemies than jumping out and start fighting them.

The Mako is able to run over enemies as well. It also killed everything without exiting the vehicle. Something that couldn't be done with the car in MEA, right?

If the kett had half a brain, they could take out the Nomad with a armed and armoured vehicle. Where as the Mako can fight back, unlike the Nomad.

My two experiences with the trying to run over enemies with the Nomad: 1. Hit enemy, Nomad comes to a complete stop and the enemy is fine. 2. Enemy gets sent flying, but loses very little health but is now really far away which means I have to track them down.

MAKO needed better handling.
Nomad needed a gun.

I bet they did it on purpose so we can never have everything we want. Improve something, take something away.

MAKO needed better handling. Nomad needed a gun. And the Hammerhead needed armour.

The car in MEA was not built for exploring. It was built to go dune buggy racing across the beach and deserts. It does not have enough room to fit 3 characters. What answer will Bioware give when asked how do Ryder, Drack and Vetra fit in the car? Do they use a shrink ray gun before entering the vehicle? One good thing is speed. They can get out of trouble faster than they got in it. It's a cool looking car to take your dog or another person to race across the sand dunes or go to the beach to catch some rays.
The MAKO is all-around built for exploring and defending itself against any enemy. It has long range capabilities. It can kill enemies without the occupants having to exit the vehicle. It has enough room to carry characters for whatever mission. The downside for the vehicle is the lack of speed. Even though it's built like a tank, with too many enemies in one area, the MAKO can become overwhelmed with taking too much damage.
The Hammerhead wasn't bad. It had mobility. It has a weapon. It was fast moving. It lacks armor. Even though it can move around with ease, it takes a couple hits before it's down for the count. If anything, I would have used the Hammerhead in MEA with some armor instead of having the car. Why I say that is because of the mobility.

I bet they did it on purpose so we can never have everything we want. Improve something, take something away. I feel like that happens on every DA and ME game tbh

Planetary exploration in ME1 was just a different version of planet scanning in ME2. You drove around aimlessly being completely taken out of the game hoping to find something interesting. I know this post is old, but I disagree with this point. You weren't driving around aimlessly, you were exploring. Cannot explore an unexplored world, without.... hmmm... exploring. I liked the ME2 missions as well, but I really missed exploring new worlds in ME2/ME3, and I always liked the Mako despite yelling at it often. So, mostly I disagree with "aimless". I always had a purpose when I was exploring - I was exploring.
