BioWare @biowareAn update on Dragon Age production and more from GM, Gary McKay. bit.ly/3t0Q254Game Update: Dragon Age in Productionby Author -BioWare - Posted on February 23, 2022 Hello, Last month you heard from me as we reflected back on 2021 and looked ahead to 2022 with the goal to communicate more often with our community and fans around the world. With that in mind, let’s start with the next game in development: the new Dragon Age. As you may know, there are a few different stages to a game’s development. First are the Concept and Pre-Production phases, when a team works on the creative vision for the game and starts laying down the technical foundations – basically creating the conceptual and technological blueprint for the game. Iteration and flexibility are key here, as ideas and game mechanics are proposed, tested out, and refined. Once the blueprint is complete, the Production phase begins. Production is all about executing on the blueprint: taking those ideas and turning them into a working game. Eventually, a team hits Alpha and then Beta, where the polish happens, and the things that are special really come to life. For the next Dragon Age, we are right in the middle of Production, which is a great feeling. Our blueprint was completed last year, so we’re now focused on building out our vision: creating amazing environments, deep characters, strong gameplay, impactful writing, emotional cinematics – and much more. The blueprint for the game is well understood and the team is focused. As we continue our journey, we wanted to wish Christian Dailey a heartfelt farewell from BioWare. Christian started with us back in 2018 and has been a big influence on our games and leadership team, most recently as Executive Producer over Dragon Age’s development. The games industry is ever-changing though and sometimes folks want to go and try new things – we understand, but we will miss him as a friend and as a colleague. A strong leadership team of industry and Dragon Age veterans is in place to carry us through Production and beyond. The game’s Production Director is Mac Walters, who recently led the development for Mass Effect Legendary Edition and has an 18-year history with BioWare. Corrine Busche, who has been leading the design direction for Dragon Age, is our Game Director. She has a wealth of experience, including 15 years at EA, and a passion for the franchise. Benoit Houle is the Director of Product Development, and he brings an in-depth understanding of the franchise thanks to having worked on every single Dragon Age game – starting over 16 years ago on Dragon Age: Origins. I will also be working more closely with the Dragon Age team as they go through production while continuing to guide the studio. Later this year, you will start to hear more from the Dragon Age team in the form of blogs and social content. As we move through development we’ll also be in regular communication with players who sit on our community council. As passionate fans like you, we take their feedback seriously. We are also listening to all of you as you share your thoughts and experiences, so keep talking to us! On other fronts, our Star Wars™: The Old Republic team led by Keith Kanneg, recently celebrated 10 years of amazing storytelling with the launch of our latest expansion, Legacy of the Sith. The team hasn’t stopped with just launching the expansion, and is already focused on more updates to continue the celebration all year long. You can see our launch trailer for the new release here; which was a creative collaboration with Industrial Light and Magic, and we absolutely love it. And of course, we’re also working on the next Mass Effect. The team, led by Mike Gamble, is made up of a team of veteran developers as well as some new, really talented people. They are all actively prototyping new ideas and experiences. AAA next-gen games take a long time to make – and we know our fans may want them sooner. But our Number One priority needs to be quality, and that simply takes time to get it right. As we embark on a new year of adventures, we’re excited to share more with you. Until then, thank you once again to all our fans. Here’s to a great 2022! Stay well. Gary McKay Christian Dailey @christiandaileyHi friends. I wanted to pass on the news that I am leaving BioWare. The next Dragon Age is in great hands. Looking forward to cheering on the team and playing as a fan. Please follow my friends on the latest and greatest moving forward. Much love #DragonAge #Anthem family. 🐲🤖 I want to reiterate that the Dragon Age team is killing it and the game is in amazing hands. Don't fall for the hate. Lots of positivity, can't wait for when they can share more.

Kudos for the transparency. I wish their team and leadership all the best. May their successes be many, their frustrations few and the crunch between minimal and nonexistant. Good to know that all the ideas are hammered down and they're in production.
It's a shame to see Mr. Dailey leave, hopefully he'll find a new place he enjoys working at.

Jeff Grubb @jeffgrubb As I reported on a recent GrubbSnax, Dragon Age is in really good shape. Everyone is pretty happy with it. It's hitting milestones. It's easy to give into anxiety when something like this happens, but I've heard no reason to expect the worst.

Isn't Walters one of the two we have to thanks for the Huey, Dawey and Louie endings in ME3? If that's so, for the first time I'm on the pessimist side.

Isn't Walters one of the two we have to thanks for the Huey, Dawey and Louie endings in ME3? If that's so, for the first time I'm on the pessimist side. It seems he is taking over for Dailey so hopefully he is to far in the chain of command to really do anything too crazy or things are to set in stone. Though hopefully this means we could get Andromeda's RP mechanics. *thumbs up* "The game’s Production Director is Mac Walters,"URK! IKR? Honestly my first question was 'but what about Mass Effect?' I guess that would be Mike Gamble and whoever he chooses to be the game director there. Has Mac Walters been with Bioware through all these years or did he leave at some point after ME3 and come back recently? If he did leave it was a long time ago because he was back in a significant role for Andromeda and think I've seen his name connected to Anthem in some capacity.

If the news about DA and ME has the same kind of delusion, I fear for the future of both franchises odd statement. From a business standpoint if they didn't have confidence in their product and that it could make money, even a limited amount, then they wouldn't have made it. And to not express confidence in a product once made is...stupid. From a personal standpoint even if I'm not the biggest fan of TOR I still found the trailer impressive enough that it piqued my interest. It was very well done and also took the usual story jabs at the Jedi that I love which could suggest that narratively it could be interesting. And given the situation I am hella impressed the game has been active this long. Given the long wait between DAI and DA4 it gives me some hope that we might see a longer life span for DA4. I would be thrilled to be playing new expansions in 2033 to DA4.

That "expansion" was so poorly received all around by pretty much any place you look. And as for the main topic, I really have 0 expectations going forward and no hype levels. The last few games, all the management issues and how they've have managed swtor have really put one of my favorite game developers into the bottom tier. I'd love for a return to form but will have to wait and see.

Once the blueprint is complete, the Production phase begins. Production is all about executing on the blueprint: taking those ideas and turning them into a working game Our blueprint was completed last year, This is new information because originally we understood that pre-production (the blueprint) was completed around March 2020 (based off a presentation by one of the team that said as much). This also seemed backed up by the fact that they started to release information from Summer 2020 onwards, showcasing actual characters, concept art, game play mechanics, etc. Yet this latest official blog states that the blueprint was only completed last year, in other words 2021. This would explain why we shouldn't expect the game until late 2023 at the earliest. For the next Dragon Age, we are right in the middle of Production, If this is literally true then I would guess that pre-production finalised in Spring 2021 (as opposed to 2020) and thus full production has been underway for around 1 year. This would mean they would be at Alpha stage by around the same time next year, which I assume would fit with a late autumn release date. Am I right?

At least Casey Hudson, with the same type of involvement had the decency to leave. Twice. Blower has had leadership failure after leadership failure for at least the last decade, with "Super Mac" front and center. But, this time will be different....... Andromeda was already in deep shits when Walters was brought in, and if Schreier's article rings true, then all he did was basically pull the devs out of the inane fuckery that was their pre-production and finalize what was up and about. Andromeda's failures cannot, in good faith, be attributed to its time under Walters, because they predate his time as Game Director.
And IIRC, his role in Anthem's actual dev process was quite lesser, compared to his time with Andromeda. Even bigger fuckery abound with that one, and I don't recall any insider account on the game's development lob anything on him in particular.
Quite literally, the only thing you get right is his role in ME3's endings.
Now compare all that to this game, which so far appears to have everything laid down in terms of what it's meant to be and appears to be going pretty well from most accounts. Granted, the final arbiter of all that will be when the game's actually out and in players' hands, but until then, we take insider info and these updates where applicable.
This excessive degree of overgeneralization (bordering on outright misinformation) does no one, including you, any favors.
