So we've had two development design changes since the games inception (single-player -> Live service -> single-player), and when compounded with COVID, DA4's launch timeline has dramatically increased. Bioware has expressed that they believe the extended launch window will allow for a better game at launch. This has been echoed by figures like David Gaiter, Mark Darrah, and video game figures like Jeff Grubb (who's posited that the game is on schedule).
That being said, somes fans are discordant regarding the long wait for the game to arrive. With launch approximations for DA4 being anywhere between Q4 2023, to Q1 2024, fans may be waiting nearly a decade for the sequel to Inquisition.
I'm sure some of you understand why such a long delay was needed, some may feel we never should have gotten to this point, while others feel it ultimately won't matter; casting pessimistic outlook of the game. Still, we have plenty people here who are still positive about the games potential, so this is an opportunity for everyone here express where they're at right now.

I really think the ultimate answer to this question won't come until after release. How will all these 'content changes' effect things? How will the extended develiopment effect them? Is it a sign they are taking their time to get it right or a sign of listless wandering and will lead eventually to a rush?
Given Bio's track record I have to almost be confident in the final product but it is still worth wondering and pointing out that a long dev cycle does not gurantee a good game. That being said I voted 'yes, but begrugingly so'.

No, I don't think it will amount to anything.
After all, the long development cycle does not mean that they took extra time to make sure they'll deliver a massive amount of high quality content, they lost time because of various reboots and leadership shake-ups. I doubt EA will give them actual extra time to deliver a super polished product given how much time already went down the drain for nothing.
They pottered about for seven or so years to make that MVP Anthem, and we all know how that turned out.

Unsure. Recent games with a long development cycles have been major disappointments like Duke Nukem Forever and Cyberpunk 2077 with dated gameplay, graphics, humor, lackluster stories and characters, and "with more bugs than a bait shop" to quote from the original Tron. I'm not saying a game with a long development cycle can't be a great game but now of days it feels more uncommon game. To me a game with a long development cycle has never equaled a great game and/or a game with a short development cycle equals a bad game either.
Plus with the PS5, XBX, and new high end PC graphic cards are still hard to get without costing 2 arms and 4 legs because of pandemic, chip shortages, supply chain problems and scalpers. So while I think it's getting easier to get them we're still a long way off from them being easy to find at retail and retail cost.

I want an XBX and a PS5 without paying over 2-3 times the actual cost the consoles and it to be nice to be able to walk into a Wal-Mart, Target, Meijer, Gamestop, or Best Buy box store with the cash to buy the consoles, or to buy one off Amazon and not have to wait 6 months before they get one in and then I have to scramble to get the money to get one with very little warning. So can I imagine it's the same with new PC games that look like you need to know what the specs are so you can buy any new hardware and/or software to run it at best levels or if your PC can handle it at all.
My guess and that what it is a guess is that the devs at BioWare don't know what the specs are themselves given all the production problems and setbacks the game has.

While I'm sure there are performance targets they'd like to hit (esp. for consoles), I imagine they won't know exactly where it lands on the PC-side until the game is mostly complete. Honestly, I'm of the opinion that they should just ship for next-gen only regardless. Last gens consoles were outdated by PC barely a third of the way through their lifecycle. No reason to continue making the same mistake that Inquisition was, where we have multiple developers of that game wishing they had only made it next-gen only (i.e. Xbox One/PS4).

I do wonder how this translates to PC, will the minimum be 8 cores, at least 12GB memory with fast SSD and at least middle of line GPU? My PS5 is much faster than my desktop PC is now.

Almost top of the line GPU? Please. The game is developed with current gen consoles in mind. If you want to play at max settings at 4k with RT, yeah you will need a high end card - like any other AAA title these days. Otherwise, if you are content to play comparable settings to what the consoles offer, any decent gaming rig less than 6 years old will play it fine. The GPU in the PS5 is equivalent to a RTX2070. Even with hardware optimizations for a fixed configuration, that's short of "almost top of the line". The core count minimum will be 4. An i3 12th gen will run this game fine.

On the original subject: Well I waited a long time for the first Dragon Age and it was awesome. I'm willing to wait for the next and hope that it is also awesome.
On PC's consoles etc: It's (probably) not worth buying something now for a game that may be two years away. However if you need (or want) something new now then you need it now.
Consoles are a great bang for the buck option if all you are looking at is gaming. If you still need a PC/laptop for other things then the equation gets poorer. Modern PC's, if decently specced come with storage that is just as fast as consoles so that isn't a selling point. PC's don't have to share memory between CPU and GPU so they'll always be better there. As to CPU cores, 4 is enough, 6 is good and 8 allows extra headroom at the moment. More than 8 is not likely to matter to gaming for quite a while, although other tasks (like video encoding or Blender for example) can use them if you have them.
PC's of course have more games available and the games are generally cheaper, but at the end of the day your own personal circumstances are what must dictate your purchases, not what any forum hive mind dictates.

My stance is that if you're working on a project for 2-3 years and still manage to essentially accomplish nothing, redirect your focus on a new project. The biggest problem with Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda is that Bioware insisted on making them. And as much as I want DA4 (more than anything, trust me) I see the same writing on the wall here.
This kind of reminds me of Blizzard's Titan. They tried to make a brand new MMO. They worked on it for 7 years. Something clearly wasn't working. The project was completely rebooted and instead of continuing to try to make Titan work and force it (as Bioware does with every game...) they decided to repivot their vision and make a shooter instead. And we ended with Overwatch, a game much more successful and iconic than they could ever imagine.

That is an unrealistic goal for game development with what is expected a game deliver anymore. Most games take 3 to 4 years if they aren't open world and 4 to 5 if they are open world. Personally putting some unrealistic goal for development just makes a game like Cyberpunk 2077 or Anthem because they had to rush to get it out the door to meet that deadline.

The basic problem with this logic is that BioWare was tackling multiple projects at once and plus Dragon Age has at least gone through one from the ground up 'reboots' in terms of their project. And right now BioWare is one company, within the overall EA heirarchy true but it seems like EA is not in the habbit of spreading out their franchises to different studios like Ubisoft is. So until BioWare grows (which they might) that is not really a reasonable goal to expect them to produce things that quickly. I hope that changes because even I'm not getting any younger but I also recognize that is fact. Even BioWare has annonced that the new ME game has gone into development which hopefully is code for 'in production' so hopefully we get the next ME game before too long but even then 'in development' could just mean pre pod. Anyways I am also all for developping the game for the next gen only. I just don't think it will be worth the hassle to develp it for multiple platforms even with the potential added profits. Nor do I think BioWare should delay it just in the hope that more consoles can get out there. Sure that is incentive to not rush either but get it out when you are ready.

Even BioWare has annonced that the new ME game has gone into development which hopefully is code for 'in production' so hopefully we get the next ME game before too long but even then 'in development' could just mean pre pod. They've just started advertising for the team leads for the project. Which means the initial direction is set and they probably have the outline of a 'bible', but not much more.

The problem is that it doesn't sound like they're taking a long time because they're creating something incredible like, say, RDR2. It rather seems like this is only happening because they're really fumbling the ball with the development.
At best, we can expect to get a subpar game with a good story (like DA2). This assuming DA4 will be actually finished and released.

The problem is that it doesn't sound like they're taking a long time because they're creating something incredible like, say, RDR2. It rather seems like this is only happening because they're really fumbling the ball with the development. It's more that they're really fumbling the ball with direction. Management keeps on changing what they want from the development team who then have to start from the beginning again. BioWares or EA's? Not saying there might not have been a BioWare exec responsible for the direction changes, but it seems like much of the design directions were caused by EA (based on reporting).

I no expert in GameDev management, but Strategy would come from the top, so EA. Probably wanting Bioware to incorporate elements of what is the current trend, whether it be MMO, MOBA, Shooter or whatever that they believe they can monetise. Instead I would hope that Bioware would be allowed to play to their own traditions and sink or swim based on that. That would then be up to the Bioware management to commission something that their devs are good at, whilst still giving punters something they will enjoy. So the devs have to provide some new things, cos relying on grognards will send you out of business, while playing to their own strengths.

Darrah made a video about this. He's not worried about DA4 for this exact reason. The team has spent a lot of time on it, much like DA:O. Darrah also thinks DA4 is going to be better than DA:O.

My stance is that if you're working on a project for 2-3 years and still manage to essentially accomplish nothing, redirect your focus on a new project. The biggest problem with Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda is that Bioware insisted on making them. And as much as I want DA4 (more than anything, trust me) I see the same writing on the wall here. This kind of reminds me of Blizzard's Titan. They tried to make a brand new MMO. They worked on it for 7 years. Something clearly wasn't working. The project was completely rebooted and instead of continuing to try to make Titan work and force it (as Bioware does with every game...) they decided to repivot their vision and make a shooter instead. And we ended with Overwatch, a game much more successful and iconic than they could ever imagine. Then all we would get would be games like Dragon Age 2. That is an unrealistic goal for game development with what is expected a game deliver anymore. Most games take 3 to 4 years if they aren't open world and 4 to 5 if they are open world. Personally putting some unrealistic goal for development just makes a game like Cyberpunk 2077 or Anthem because they had to rush to get it out the door to meet that deadline. Clearly you haven't understood my comment! My point wasn't that the entire development cycle needs to be 2-3 years like it was with DA2 (it was shorter than that, but whatever). My point was, that if you spent 3 years in pre-production, throwing concepts and mechanics on the wall to see what sticks, instead of investing that time carefully to build up a product, then your project have no direction and vision, and you better off redirecting your focus and starting over on a new project, one that you can visualize and materialize a lot better. Anthem's development took 7 years. 5 years of which were spent in pre-production, essentially not producing anything substantial. Andromeda's development took 5 years, 3 years of which were spent in pre-production, essentially not producing anything substantial. I can imagine Dragon Age 4 having similar background history as these. That is a problem. You said it yourself, you should be making the entire game in 3-5 years. Not be in a pre-production stage for 3-5 years. And that was my point. Saying that these efforts of forcing an old project to work are in vain, and they're better off spent working out a new idea. Imagine if they didn't force Anthem to work (it never did, but w/e). We could've gotten 2 games that had development cycle of 4 and 3 years in that time period. That is literally what I meant. Hopefully you understand it now.

Or was it clearly titled "DA4 will be better than DAO" I mean, if true, that would be amazing, but I love Origins, so at the moment, based on zero inside knowledge *Press F to doubt*
