I think the change in creative direction really shows because how did it go from that magnificently dark red/gold colour scheme, to bright purple and silver? Seriously what...I'm getting Saints Row vibes and it's not good. As much as I love the anagram, the name Dread Wolf feels too obvious, and the lack of spacing between dread wolf is also very confusing!!! I know purple means royalty etc but the tone of the reveal just feels weird.
Also the font choice and outer glow makes the logo feel like it's straight out of Photoshop in the 90's. The logo doesn't particularly scream 'dread' to me, it makes Solas seem like some hokey caricature.

I guess my point is more about the general creative direction of the franchise.
Star Wars fans expected TBoB to feature the galaxy’s most feared bounty Hunter doing badass things as he carved out a criminal empire from the ruins of Jabba the Hutt’s previous holdings.
Instead they got Boba doing community service and enlisting the help of wankers like the cyborg bikers to fight his battles, plus two bonus episodes of The Mandalorian.
I can’t help but feel we’re heading down a similar path. This feeling has been building since Tevinter Nights and it’s only getting worse with the revelation of that STUPID title.

Either don't expect things or be willing to put your expectations in a small box in the corner and be prepared to strangle them to death if you have to. Which honestly this title reveal is probably another good reminder of that.

Now that I've had several hours to digest it, I think I am nonplussed about the title. I mean, we know who the Dreadwolf is. We know his objectives and have a fair handle on his abilities. There's no enigma to it. It doesn't inspire curiosity with mysterious insinuations. It may as well be Dragon Age: We Are Going to Fight Solas. It just has a "phoning it in" feel to it.

I think the purple will have meaning in-game (Pride/Spirit/etc.) as well as just a punchy colour choice to stand out. It also has some Minrathous vibes (esp. the neon-esque "Dreadwolf").   That said, I did quite like the logo in gold. Hopefully, they can work that back into their marketing as well.   |

Name-wise, Dreadwolf's "mouth-feel" is a little... odd. But I'm reminded of something that David said about naming things. Eventually, any initial resistance will be overcome, and... that's what it'll be. I'm fine with it myself. And I can tell they really wanted that DAD acronym. I mean, when I think of a wolf, I think of an animal that is intelligent, loyal (to its pack), a little mysterious and very, very dangerous to its enemies. Throw in ‘Dread’ and you’ve got a recipe for a title to intrigue the uninitiated.

Now that I had a few hours of sleep: what an incredibly tepid reveal. As a contrast I just watched the reveal trailer for Owlcat's "Rogue Trader" - the words "rogue trader" sound less exciting than "Dreadwolf" but I want to play that game already. As far as "Dreadwolf" goes... yeah, take your time.
I really hope that their title pick wasn't for dad jokes or I'll worry that those will have the same intention as the weird focus on grabbits before Anthem's release: to hide that they had little more than nothing.

He’ll properly introduce himself when the time is right, but we did hint at his return when we announced #TheDreadWolfRises back in 2018. Sorry, I wasn’t clear. What I meant, in the case it’s associated with the protagonist, is that they backtracked on what Varric said in that teaser. It’s quite possible many things changed since then. Yes, it is odd that they say they hinted at his return in 2018, when the teaser trailer of 2020 actually said he would be an enemy, along with demons, dragons and darkspawn. So should we discount the 2020 trailer? The Trailer never said that he is the enemy.

But then my main feeling towards Inquisition and its title reveal was intrigue. After all I highly doubted that BioWare was just going to up and let us be the Spanish Inquisition of Thedas...at least without the opprotunity to roleplay better options...so there was a certain mystery in how BioWare was going to make an organization whose title has such negative real world connotations into something good in universe.

All the other titles have referred to the player character in a way (Origins, Exodus, Inquisition) so the choice of the name "Dreadwolf" is somewhat interesting. I wonder if it has anything to do with that short clip with his VA in the BTS video. Remember he says: "They call me the Dread Wolf, what will they call you?" That seemed to hint the PC might end up having to take action that will save the world but that they won't be seen as a hero because of some effect of the action that will make them seem like the villain. This will be in complete contrast to our previous heroes, where they assumed heroic status among the people they saved, although at the expense of or even despite their true motivations and personality. |
