Well… DA hasn’t had the best record with outside media. I guess the visuals in the trailer didn’t impress me very much either. I’m expecting something more inline with DOTA Dragon’s Blood rather than Edgerunners. It might be good, but not coming close to the sort of impact of those other shows. I’d be thrilled to be wrong! Since Edgerunners released my YouTube channel monthly views have gone from 5k to 70k+ on the back of 4 Cyberpunk videos I did. So I’d love to get the same engagement on my 60+ Dragon Age videos 😂 I mean looking at the youtube comments for DOTA, the fans love it. Fans may like it, but it didn’t have nearly the impact of Arcane or Edgerunners in terms of bringing in people outside the dedicated fanbase in the way those shows did.

I guess but Arcane had LoL money and Edgerunners I'm not even sure of the impact but aren't DA fans hoping for a good spinoff? Who knows it may not bring as many people as those two shows did, but it can bring in a few.

There’s a distinction between shows fans enjoy and shows that are so good even non-fans think they’re amazing. I guess that’s what I’m getting at here. Arcane and Edgerunners really raised the bar for this type of spin-off series and that matters because Absolution will be compared to them. Cyberpunk 2077 in particular has been enjoying a massive resurgence in its player base since Edgerunners dropped. It surpassed The Witcher 3’s peak concurrent player count on steam and CDPR announced it had sold 20 million units (lifetime sales for The Witcher 3 being ~40 million, so getting half that in two years is pretty impressive). Key devs even posted online thanking players for giving the game a second chance. I just can’t see Absolution being so good as to have that level of impact on drawing people into the Dragon Age franchise, though I’d be pleased to be wrong.

We have to keep in mind that content that looks similar on the surface (an animated series for the game) may play a different function within the franchise - and I'm not sure how much Absolution is designed to be a series that is supposed to entice new people to immerse themselves in the world of Dragon Age and how much it will be like most of the auxiliary materials for DA, which are addressed to the hardcore fans (and serve as a bridge between the game entries) and be like "we're still here' the franchise is alive". Also - unlike Edgerunners or Arcane - there's no recently released/ongoing game for people to jump into, so even if Absolution it does increase interest in the franchise, the truth of a matter is that the last entry to it has been released 8 years ago and there's just no way its ability to drive sales would be comparable.

Bleh just have the show be good and let the chips fall where they may. Given CDPR's plans for the future, it looks like they've learned nothing from Cyberpunk's disastrous launch. Just have a good series and if it doesn't pull in new fans, at least let the fans of the Dragon Age series be entertained.

If anything I think this time limit is the one thing that coould mean Absolution could end up being side marketing for DAD to try and make more people aware of the setting and hype of knowledge before launch. Its been so long BioWare probably thinks they need all the help they can get and with it suspiciously releasing in December...along with Dragon Age day and the game awards...ultimatley we'll see how much BioWare does for either event but if they do stuff and then Absolution releases it could be the perfect storm of marketing to...well kick off the marketing. Or alternatively we're looking at a TVN situation where the game still won't release for awhile so someone is just doing another side story, which could still serve as round about marketing.

On a side note, comparing Absolution to Edgerunners and Arcane is pointless. One is a live service game and the other is still fresh (for the wrong reasons partially) in people's mind. Like it was mentioned above, there hasn't been a Dragon Age game in 8 years. I would rather judge it individually maybe it'll be very good, maybe it'll be good among fans but as long as the series is good, it should bring in some new fans.

Just have a good series and if it doesn't pull in new fans, at least let the fans of the Dragon Age series be entertained. I mean okay? I’m just saying it probably won’t reach the high bar of quality and impact set by newer attempts at game spinoff media. We can set the bar low, and I’ll still enjoy it probably, but my (and many others) expectations for this sort of media have been set high by those examples. I actually think whether there’s an existing game out is irrelevant. My point in bringing Cyberpunk up was that it was hugely popular even beyond the dedicated fan base of the game, which led to that impact. That sort of popularity beyond the dedicated fan base is something we’ve been seeing more of since Castlevania started airing on Netflix. It’s undeniably a great thing for the brand. As for what Absolution needs to accomplish, well I imagine they want to introduce the brand into general audience’s minds after so long without a proper installment (just as they’re getting ready to market the game more I must imagine). That just makes it more important that they’ll want to reach a broader audience. And CDPR has spent the past two years pushing out major fixes for CP2077, with a major expansion coming next year. They’ve redeemed themselves in a lot of people’s eyes, as indicated by all the people giving it a second chance. That they’re working on a sequel means they’ve “learned nothing” I guess…. Well that’s neither here nor there.

CDPR working on a sequel is a good decision. It lets them build a new game from the ground up instead of having to work with a base game's code that suffered so badly from the ill fated attempt to drag ancient console hardware along. They can lose that dead weight and make it snappy on present day hardware. A from the ground up work may take more effort, but will likely yield much better results.
I wanted more additional content for the original Cyberpunk 2077 too, but I totally understand what they're doing.
Ahem. On to the main topic.
The trailer looked so frigging bland that if I ever watch this, it will be out of curiosity about how dragon-agey it turns out to be, not because I think that it will be any good.

Teaser, not trailer. We haven't gotten a proper trailer yet. Netflix puts out trailers for upcoming series anywhere between a week to a month before release, so it won't be until November that we'll see one. When we do, I think we'll be able to make a more accurate assessment of Absolution's potential quality.

And seesh already with the pessimism. Dragon Age fans gotta be the most pessimistic fanbase I've experience besides Halo fans. In some ways I can see it. DA expanded universe has kind of been a bit...weird...even in what I have seen it so I can understand the pessimism and keeping my expectations a bit low. That being said on the other hand I don't really see the hate Netflix gets...though I guess this could just be from my small sample size. . But loving what they're doing with the Witcher and the show runner for the anime seems like a competent writer so there we go on that front, I'm looking forward to it.
As some one who has seen and read some Scott's previous TV shows and comics she's written I can say she is a damn good writer.

What are the odds I'll never get to watch it because they won't think it's worth releasing it over here?
Yeah. That's what I think every time something nice comes out that isn't a game. This time, "nice" is still out for the jury to decide, but it still applies.
Do they expect me to really be in any mood to pay them for a service if I have to first pay for a VPN to get my money's worth out of it?

IGN @ignAlongside revealing the voice cast and a new trailer, Netflix has announced that all six episodes of the animated series Dragon Age: Absolution will be released on December 9, 2022. bit.ly/3hxnKNgKimberly Brooks as MIRIAM - A pragmatic elven mercenary who escaped enslavement in Tevinter, Miriam is closed-off to many who know her. But her heroic nature shines through when she’s forced to confront the nation that destroyed her life, and the man at the heart of her misery. Matthew Mercer as FAIRBANKS - A veteran freedom fighter, Fairbanks leads our heroes with a warm-hearted sense of adventure, a pair of daggers, and a dashing smile to boot. Ashly Burch as QWYDION - A bubbly Qunari mage with a penchant for explosions, Qwydion is an open-hearted, easily-distracted blabbermouth who can level a building or cure a hangover, depending on the situation. Sumalee Montano as HIRA - An idealistic mage, Hira hopes to rekindle her relationship with Miriam while advancing her relentless crusade against Tevinter. But a terrible secret will put both at risk. Phil LaMarr as ROLAND - Despite his effortless demeanor, the charming Roland possesses unmatched grit. When disaster looms and all seems lost, Roland is as sure as the blade he wields. Keston John as LACKLON - A dwarven Lord of Fortune, Lacklon is a gruff fighter, a born brawler, a complete glory hound, and just enough of a coward to make sure he stays alive. Josh Keaton as REZAREN - Born to privilege and plagued by tragedy, Rezaren sees himself as a good man in a wicked world. I guess this Fairbanks is a complete new character or is this the same one from DAI aka Evariste Lemarque?

So ... upon reading IGN's write-up and watching that trailer ... I'm getting the vibe that Absolution is going to be a very paint-by-numbers narrative. Adequate, but not exactly inspired.
That's not 100 per cent a bad thing, but if you're hoping for this to be the next Arcane or Edgerunners, I suspect you'll be disappointed.

If I'm being completely honest, I'll be watching this almost entirely because it is Dragon Age and might give some clues for Dreadwolf story directions. Otherwise, these types of shows aren't my thing.
Interesting that this involves a heist, which was supposed to be a big thing in Joplin before the reboot.

That's not 100 per cent a bad thing, but if you're hoping for this to be the next Arcane, I suspect you'll be disappointed. Sorry but if anyone is hoping for this well they clearly have forgotten the "quality" from Paragon Lost or Dawn of the Seeker. I personal don´t expect from this series. Maybe its ok at best but there is no way this could be the next Arcane.
