Anders? He's a Grey Warden AND Varric knows him and "former friend" could fit. I think in BioWare's canon he's alive, but still, might be someone who's alive in ALL World States. It depends on how much the story feeds into DA:D. After all, Fenris was used in the last comic series even though he can be dead in some world states. However, the writers had the survivors heading down south at the end, apart from Tessa and Marius, so their story wasn't directly feeding into DA:D but Tevinter Nights and the Dread Wolf Take You Mortalitasi's tale. Since the blurb suggests there is a direct feed into DA:D with this latest series, it seems unlikely they will use someone like Anders unless he is not going to survive it. That would create problems of its own, since those people who have Anders alive in their world states will not be happy if he dies off screen. However, I do agree that he best fits the "former" friend tag since Varric did not have anything complementary to say about him in DAI, so I definitely feel Varric no longer considers him a "current" friend. It is possible that one of the Grey Wardens from Tevinter Nights could fit the bill if you think about their life prior to joining the Wardens. In particular I am thinking of Evka. Could she have known, say, Harding prior to joining the Wardens? Or had some sort of connection with the Inquisition. According to her history in Hunger, she had been a Warden for around 3 years prior to that story, so if that was set around 9:45, that would bring her time outside the Wardens into the period when the Inquisition was operational. So, could Harding have come into contact with her when scouting out the Deep Roads for the Descent? If the person is a former friend of both Varric and Harding that would point to an Inquisition connection. Another possibility is one of the Inquisition agents from the War Table missions and multi-player. In particular I am thinking of Korbin. He was a member of the Legion of the Dead before joining the Inquisition and WoT2 says he was sentenced to the Legion when he took responsibility for someone else's crime. I can imagine both Varric and Harding having time for such a selfless individual, probably socialising in the tavern at Skyhold. When the Inquisition was disbanded/cut down in size, presumably he went back to the Legion and they work closely with the Grey Wardens. So, he would qualify as a former friend and have a reason to be in the Deep Roads, plus a connection with the Grey Wardens.

I always figured wherever Evka would go, Antoine would follow, given the nature of their relationship and the short story that came out last year. And I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to them, though it would be a great way to bring them back in another medium and set them up as characters for DAD.

I always figured wherever Evka would go, Antoine would follow, given the nature of their relationship and the short story that came out last year. Maybe it is Antoine who raised the alarm and then provides the Grey Warden connection with the other two. If the friend referenced is Evka or Antoine (who had only recently joined the Wardens in TN) or both, then it would likely point to them being part of DA:D, although this always seemed likely given how much attention they have already received. Of course, the various characters introduced in TN and the later short stories, could be because they were setting them up for multi-player elements that have since been dropped. I've often wondered if Tevinter Nights had story elements taken from the original heist driven DA4, which the writers didn't want to lose altogether, so I could equally see the comic series being used to pursue one of the more important multi-player plots they had devised, which is now being used to lead into the main game.

Harding looks amazing. Trying to wrap my head around who those other characters could be and what they have to do with the story.

Wait. I just found this synopsis: “After their close encounter in the Deep Roads under Marnas Pell, Varric and Harding continue their quest to find Solas. An invitation to the home of Lady Chrysanthus in Vyrantium puts the pair on a course that will cross paths with the Venatori, as well as deadly Antivan Crow assassins…” Here: comicbuzz.com/dragon-age-the-missing-2-cover-revealed/omg

I wonder if that's Teia and Viago in the background? Pity we can't see the ears. However, what would the pair of them be doing in southern Tevinter? Last we heard of them they had their own potential problems with the Qun threatening Antiva. I suppose they could be looking for something to use against them but I found it odd that the previous comic series had two Talons doing a fairly routine task in northern Tevinter. When you are a Talon, you have a lot of subordinates at your disposal, at least some of whom should be capable of doing the job. An invitation to the home of Lady Chrysanthus in Vyrantium puts the pair on a course that will cross paths with the Venatori, as well as deadly Antivan Crow assassins…” So this does answer a number of questions. Yes, it's Solas they're looking for and it's almost certainly Teia and Viago on the cover. I really hope not since my objection above still applies. What in the heck are two Talons doing in Tevinter when Antiva is threatened, particularly when the organisation recently lost several of its established leaders? I do find it somewhat ridiculous how they include people from other stories in this way. That said, with the Vyrantium connection, it wouldn't have surprised me to see Lucanis there (since I don't believe he is dead), so I suppose there is an outside chance that the Crows have mounted a major operation in retribution for his (supposed) death and that is why actual Talons are involved in it. The guy on the right also reminds me of a character from this DA:D concept art... This seems more promising to me. If the comic series is a lead into the game, then it makes sense that we might be introduced to one of the new characters we will be meeting there.

The comic could always take place before their story in Tevinter Nights. That takes care of all these worries you have. Not necessarily and besides it would be odd for Harding and Varric to be operating without the Inquisitor before Trespasser or be trying to find Solas in southern Tevinter (we do stab our knife into this region in the final scene, so it makes sense the search has been started there). I'm fairly certain that the events of Tevinter Nights are occurring mostly post the Inquisition in its original manifestation. Now I suppose it is possible that Teia and Viago had business in the south before they went to Ventus for the events in Deception, which was also set post Trespasser, except the main operative in Vyrantium at that time would appear to have been Lucanis. Teia and Viago in Ventus at least made some sense because they were checking out how serious the Qunari threat was but I struggle with why two Talons were down in Vyrantium at this stage. However, looking on the bright side, if they are showing such a Crow presence in Tevinter, then that probably means all that concept art featuring Crows was in Tevinter rather than Antiva. So, regardless of how the artist labelled it (which could have been a deliberate mislead) the fairy tale castle is likely in Minrathous or, at the very least, Vyrantium, because the Crow lady flourishing her sword in front of it, is Teia and she does seem to be working there.

Suddenly...and this is kind of an off the wall conspiracy theory admittedly and literally just thought of this so take it for what it is...but now I'm wondering if this isn't an indication of change of scope within the game. That they want these characters to participate in the game still, but instead of having multiple nations their going to trim it down to *just* Tevinter. Of course this would lave me torn. On the one hand just focusing the game in Tevinter makes a lot of sense. But I would love to see the Anderfells and Antiva in game to and if its not in Dreadwolf...well who knows when the next DA will come out. Though much like with Varric and maybe Harding, if the theories are right about the idneitity of those characters, then it could be a way of explaining why they're in Tevinter at the start of Dreadwolf whehter or not we end up in Antiva at some point or not.

I've said previously how I wondered if the different locations were connected to multi-player and once that was dropped, things might be trimmed down. On the one hand just focusing the game in Tevinter makes a lot of sense. But I would love to see the Anderfells and Antiva in game to and if its not in Dreadwolf...well who knows when the next DA will come out. I think the Anderfels is still a possibility. It is much closer than the main centres in Antiva and is also close to Kal-Sharok, which I'm also hoping will still feature. I was always puzzled by the concept art being full of so many shots that were allegedly Antiva City when we were meant to be heading to Tevinter. It is possible we could still travel there but I would rather they limited the number of locations so they can do justice to the ones we do visit. I really don't want another "Val Royeaux" when it comes to Minrathous or Vyrantium, so placing leading Crows in the latter city at least makes me hopeful that previous concept art was intended to show Tevinter and not Antiva, which is encouraging. I would be happy with Minrathous as a sort of hub (like we had with Kirkwall only far more developed) with just specific parts of the plot taking us to other locations that have featured in the concept art.

While I do not remember the details of said videos a lot of the analysis I have seen on the trailers from Jackdaw et all has done a convincing enouh juob making me think such places were Antiva in those concept arts. But either its possible that they did trim it back for whatever reason or B. that such pieces of concept art were always meant to be concept art. Still at the end of the day this is speculation. There is reason to justify going there and there is not reason to justify going there. And on top of that there is, theoretically anyways, always DLC. It is also a testement to the world, at least in my mind, of just how much of the Continent I'm invested in seeing in game(s). Teinvter has always been on my list from Origins, as well as the Anderfells, the home of the Grey Wardens and I've always had a thing for deserts and Inquisition/ Josephine always made Antiva sound gorgeous.

While I do not remember the details of said videos a lot of the analysis I have seen on the trailers from Jackdaw et all has done a convincing enouh juob making me think such places were Antiva in those concept arts. I always felt they could equally be Minrathous since it is also surrounded by water and the magical aura around the castle seemed more appropriate to Tevinter than Antiva. The main argument against this was the concept art with the female Crow with the castle as a backdrop and the fact that, I think it was a blog post somewhere by the artist, the picture actually had Antiva in the link address. This is what I think Jackdaw and others were basing their assertions on. So, it did seem as though a great many pieces of concept art showed Antiva City rather than Minrathous, which always seemed rather odd. That's why I think it was either originally a way of misleading people, or the concept art will never make into the final main game, or they will re-purpose some of the cityscapes to become Minrathous in the final version. As you say, Antiva could still be part of a subsequent DLC, which would actually be better than having it in the main game, as the story would probably relate directly to the country and it could be fleshed out more fully, depending on how large the DLC might be and whether it was relevant to the main story or not. For example, if the Qunari did attack Antiva, maybe the DLC would be devoted to us dealing with that threat, without it necessarily impacting on the main plot or distracting from it by being included in the main game, a bit like was the case with Jaws of Hakkon and the Descent. So, it could be played before the end of the main game and subsequent to it. I must say, though, that now the comic series is having a section in Tevinter that features the Crows, it does mean that the concept art with Crows featured could equally be in Tevinter as opposed to Antiva. Remember the rooftop shot where Crows seemed to be battling soldiers dressed like Venatori? I think Jackdaw and others assumed this showed that the Venatori had infiltrated Antiva, whereas now it seems the opposite is true and the Crows have infiltrated Tevinter in a major way. Also, this shot featuring the Crows always seemed to be in Tevinter because it looks like they are replacing slaves on the litter and those costumes look Tevinter in style.

It’ll just have a DLC and that’s it.” I thought it might get better treatment in a dedicated DLC rather than a bit part in the main game. However, I'd rather they kept Antiva for the future, possibly coupled with Rivain, so we could get to explore the whole country rather than just the capital.

The problem is that unless the DLC is a whole expansion, like Witcher B&W level, it would still just be a bit part. Yes having it be the focus for the next game would be the best outcome.

Honestly no idea if the people on the cover are meant to be Teia and Viago or not, I guess they could be if Viago shaved of alot of his facial hair and the woman on the left is hiding elf ears. It's a different art style with weird lighting/colouring on the cover, if Harding didn't have her scar I wouldn't even recognise her. You can't even tell she has red hair with that lighting. If they're dealing with venatori in Vyrantium then we could be dealing with Crispin Kalvo, Felicia Erimond, and Magister Zara Renata - associates of the venatori Ambrose who was killed by the crow Lucanis Dellamorte. The Crows in the comic could have picked up Lucanis' venatori contact after his apparent demise. Or they could be seeking revenge against the person (probably venatori) who "killed" Lucanis. In the latter case it seems like Illario Dellamorte would make the most sense. Or perhaps The Wake takes place after this comic and we'll see Lucanis' fate ourselves?

It's a different art style with weird lighting/colouring on the cover, if Harding didn't have her scar I wouldn't even recognise her. You can't even tell she has red hair with that lighting. Unfortunately, it would seem that everything connected with DA:D is going to have either a purple or deep pink colour scheme now, with this impacting on all other colours in artwork. This latest comic series really exemplifies this. The previous 4 have all had the same cover designer even though Magekiller was by a different author to Knight Errant, Deception or Blue Wraith. Now there has been a complete break with this art style with a comic series that we are told feeds directly into the next game. Everybody looks weird on the second cover. If you go back to Deception, you can see the resemblance in the facial features of both Viago and Teia, even if Viago has slightly less facial hair on the latest cover (maybe he changed his shaving style recently) but I don't see any reason to have everyone tinted with this weird colour pallet, apart from brand recognition with DA:D. However, the two Crows were just bit parts who appeared briefly in Deception, so consistency isn't really such a problem with them. I don't think they even had names in the previous comic and it was only later confirmed the two Talons in the story Eight Little Talons were the same people. By contrast, Harding is a major NPC from DAI. You are quite right, if I didn't know that is meant to depict Harding, I would never have known it from how I knew her in game. At least it is recognisably Varric on the first cover, even with the weird colour pallet, but I don't see Harding in that image and it is not just down to the hair colour. Notice they have placed the scar too high on her cheek even allowing for the angle of the shot. The hair style is different, the lips are too large and, of course, with the colour scheme they totally lose her iconic freckles.

if I didn't know that is meant to depict Harding, I would never have known it from how I knew her in game. It appears someone tried to make her look like Cassandra?? I'm not sure how those two could get mixed up since they look nothing alike.
