so Solas definitely left that invitation there on purpose, right? I'm curious about why. He already made his offer to Charter during Tevinter Nights, there doesn't seem much point in him talking to Varric and Harding. (Although if he does, I'm curious about what he'll have to say about what happens to dwarves after the Veil comes down.) Sorry, what offer to Charter? All he said was that his action was going to save this world and elves like her, who were still alive after he completed his ritual, might actually find the result better than before. This didn't seem so much an offer as yet another attempt to justify himself. I was also confused because a] I thought Charter was a modern elf, so does that mean they will survive? (In which case why did he say to Lavellan that they would not?) and b] Now he was saying he was saving the current world rather than restoring the old one. So, what invitation did he leave for Varric and Harding? Incidentally, given the latest trailer had Varric say that dropping the Veil was his plan, we have speculated that may be his ritual is leading to something other than destruction of the Veil. So, could this be what he intends telling them. Hence Varric saying what he does in the trailer.

The first issue is out now! Mostly establishing stuff this issue, but it's nice to see some familiar faces. Incidentally, this does establish that (spoilers for Absolution, not this comic!) Kirkwall is safe and sound by the time this story occurs, so I guess that Meredith has probably been dealt with again at some point. (Or the giant pile of red lyrium is still there, creepily lurking, but it seems unlikely that Miriam and co. wouldn't have at least told somebody it was an issue.) Spoilers for this issue: so Solas definitely left that invitation there on purpose, right? I'm curious about why. I read it! I really liked it and it made me excited for DA:D. The Venatori definitely have plans for Solas and I’m curious as to what. I agree, Andrastre Reborn, that he left the invitation there on purpose, and I think he did that not for Varric and Harding’s sake but to get information as to why The Venatori are after him as well, since he probably knows V & H are being followed by one of them. Ultimately I think that will come back to bite him in the ass like the rest of his plans.
I also really loved the direct continuation of the story from Trespasser. Picked up right where we left off. Interestingly enough, Charter and Varric’s choice of words in finding a team to TRACK Solas down, not STOP Solas piqued my interest. Since we know The Inquisitior is also involved, maybe The Inquisitor is the person that wants to make that decision. It’s looking more and more likely they’ll make an appearance in DA:D.

It may be an indication that the default world state has the Inquisitor seeking to "save our friend from himself", rather than stop him at any cost.

So does the comic say why Varric just up and abandons Kirkwall to do this? Pretty much what he says in the in-game cinematic. The Former Inquisition team are the only ones who can stop Solas. There wouldn’t be a Kirkwall left if Varric did nothing.

Okay, here we go:
- Somehow, I pictured Antoine with long dark hair. Didn't expect him to be a blondie.
Also, he is a bit of a pussy here. Can't fight worth a damn and constantly needs to be saved. I think he was a little better in Tevinter Nights.
- Did anyone notice that the dwarves are skinny in this comic? They usually are much wider in the games and any other DA media. It makes them look less dwarfish, but I can't say I don't like it.
- Why are the deepstalkers so huge? I'm surprised the characters didn't acknowledge that.
- When Varric and Harding were hanging out at Skyhold, was that before or after the organization was disbanded? It's just weird that they were there at all.
- Love the lighting and shading. I daresay it looks better than other DA comic series.

Regarding Solas residing in The Deep Roads If wonder if his ability to repel the Darkspawn is due to Mythal’s power? The story definitely emphasizes that his ability to do that is peculiar.

Eh, Varric was still stout. They had female dwarves be slim since DAI.
Pretty sure that was Kirkwall, not Skyhold.

”But there’s no one I- -or the Inquisitor- -trust more than you.” -Charter to Varric
They better not force our Inquisitor to trust Varric and see him as a bestie in DA4 like they did with Hawke in DAI. My Inquisitor didn’t trust Varric as far as they could throw him.

BioWare loves Varric and is forcing him down everyone’s throat to try to force us to love him too. Best case is this is just the default worldstate or Charter just playing Varric a bit to get him to say yes.
Otherwise seriously, why would the Inquisitor trust someone who has lied multiple times more than people like Josephine, Cassandra, etc?

A promising start. I do have a couple of minor nitpicks, but they're not dealbreakers. For one, those deepstalkers were way too big; they're roughly the size of Golden Retrievers, not freaking velociraptors from Jurassic Park.
Also, Theodosian writing doesn't actually resemble English. It just gets translated to English - or whatever RL language the games are dubbed in - for our benefit. Seeing that handwritten invitation in English made me double-take.
One thing I'll commend the artist on, however: they got Evka's facial tattoos right.
There’s not much else to say. It’s kind of just the start of the adventure.

Yeah... I think it's off to a decent enough start. It was good to see Charter again and how Varric & Harding got wrangled into this. And it does lend additional weight to Harding being in DA:D. (I'm glad someone reminded me of Evka & Antoine earlier or I'd have no idea who they were. ) I kinda wish we had seen a little of the city of Marnas Pell (and not just under it ). Who knows, maybe we'll get a peek in the next issue before they're off to Vyrantium. And yes... the invitation feels like a setup. It could be that Solas is after this "Crucious Stone" and this is his way of getting the duo to do the legwork for him. I'll wait until the series wraps up before I weigh in on the writing. The art is decent, though I miss the energy Fernando brought to the previous series.

Okay, I confess I haven't bought the comic but I am curious how it leads into the game and have picked up some info based on a rather helpful review on-line. Also, looking for the clues that might be in it about possible characters in the game, since there is so little to be found elsewhere. The reviewer didn't feel it it pulled you in like the other comic series and was a bit bland. In fact the cover would seem to sum up the essence of this issue. That could be because it is purely acting as a set up for the next game rather than a self contained story as the others were. On that basis, I have questions: How did they know to look for Solas in the Deep Roads and was there anything concrete there that confirmed his presence? The reviewer seemed to think not.
Assuming, Solas knew they were following him, is he actually leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for them to follow, just like Trespasser?
Any indication where this fits time wise in relation to the story Dread Wolf Take You? Or the comic Dark Fortress for that matter, since Solas definitely pops up there.
If Solas is leading them along, do you suppose that Lady Chrysanthus in Vyrantium is someone he wants investigated or is just another piece in his puzzle he has set for them? I had a really wild idea, what if the "Lady" is actually Solas. (He got the idea from Genitivi's alter ego of the Randy Dowager.) So either there will be no Lady when they get there or Solas is going to don another one of his disguises.
If the idea is that only the old members of the Inquisition can stop him, what was all that guff at the end of Trespasser about needing new people Solas doesn't know? Why Varric and Harding and not the rest of the team? Why not the Inquisitor?

So no good reason why it has to be Varric. See my spoilered comments in the above post. I am sure you would agree with these sentiments. Harding I can understand. She is a scout, so good tracker and able to spot clues that others might miss but the other person does not have to be Varric and if anything he was totally the wrong person to send into the Deep Roads since he hates the place and has no connection to it since he was born in Kirkwall. Also, why only two people? They didn't know they were going to discover Grey Wardens when they got there. In view of the importance of their mission, there need to be more people so at least someone can report back if things go bad (or do they have a communication crystal for direct contact?) and a back up team. Like we had in Inquisition when we went to a new area. It is as though the team searching for Solas is now acting like Ameridan did when he went looking for the Hakkonites. No back up team, no lines of communication, no way of knowing if they had been successful in discovering anything or not, except that if they didn't return they could be assumed dead. In other words, stupid.

So not going to be reading these comics because not really a comic guy per se so reading the spoilers, not sure if I should even comment, maybe I'll get to these some day...but in regards to the current rather intersting conversation. Not to get anyone's hopes up but the word choice here represents a stark and complete 180 from the verbage in Tresspasser. Not going to get into the full debate again or anything and for all the reasons I mentioned extending from Tresspasser still is valid...sort of...but given the very specific words in Tresspasser about finding *new* people and suddenly the old Inquisition is the only ones specifically equipped to stop him? Puzzling to say the least. Though it should be pointed out, as another bit to the mystery, I would think that most of the Inquisition's inner circle has moved on at this point. Indeed based on Tresspasser this should've included Varic (though this wouldn't be the first time BioWare has put important people on the front lines in very dangerous situations)...so yeah just really weird word choice going on here and going to be curious to see if that has any ramifications for DA:D. Or missing context considering I am seeing this second hand.

Harding just says she's got a "lead". - He possibly did leave the invitation lying around on purpose, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. - I'm 100% certain that they're elsewhere, handling other tasks that are important to stop Solas. And I'd say it's too early to give up on the idea of new allies.
