yes, the horror of them wanting to share updates to their sequel eight years in the making. Horror? I wouldn't say so. The marketing for this game is curious, is all. I'm glad they're making good progress.

Well, I suppose their progress is now far enough that the project is hopefully safe from yet another reboot.
And yet it feels like a big bag of almost nothing. Minrathous will be an important location. Well yay, balloons fall from the ceiling and all that.
But what is there to be actually excited about unless you are a die hard fan of the franchise already?
For comparison, I also follow the marketing of Owlcat's upcoming Rogue Trader RPG. They only announced their game in early June '22 and they've already shared trailers, concept art, possible protagonist backgrounds and companions. They seem to be quite confident about their product. While DAD has reached alpha status... and yeah, it's got that city in it.

BTW this is the image that links to the page. Maybe someone can decipher meaning from this? It means all romance options will be bisexual.

DAI and MEA marketing way better, especially MEA where they focused strong marketing like few months before release, instead of year long hype train.

Going by the announced tie-in comic and the description of Minrathous here, the 2020 trailer is still relevant.

Going back to Inquisition some devs have expressed regret about marketing games too early before release. That attitude seems to have been taken to heart, especially after how people reacted to Anthem. Now that they’ve hit Alpha, we might expect them to be more comfortable pushing marketing that reflects the actual game. This update was for hard core fans and the sort of people that follow game development, not the general gaming audience. That will likely come in the form of a trailer at the game awards. They likely have a year to market the game before release.

After all, DA Absolution will be released on 1st December, just days from it.
Best time for some promotion, for both DA:A and DAD. I do wonder will we get release date, or it will left for major gaming convention later.

Don't want to presuppose their intent, but it might be that they don't want to show much off until they feel it's largely ready. While I won't say this is the main reason for why theyre not displaying much, one cause may be due to how them catching a notable degree of flak from the online gaming community for how deceptive parts of their Anthem trailer(s) were. While there's nothing to hype up, personally I like them going this route (even though I'm extremely skeptical of the final product). Setting expectations appropriately should be top priority for BioWare and this game, especially given how long the franchise has been out of the spotlight. Even moreso given BioWares recent flops as well.

They've reached alpha status and there's nothing in their game they feel certain and confident enough about to it show off at this point even though the game can supposedly be played from start to end? But maybe they're saving it all so their reveal trailer comes out with a bang. That would be nice.

It just means they had nobody working on a new trailer to time with the alpha milestone blog/announcement since it's not a marketing event. Now, December with Absolution (Dec 1st), DA Day (Dec 4th) and the Games Awards (Dec 8th), that's clear marketing events.

The communications coming out now are doing what they're intended to and as you describe, communicate lil updates here and there to the core fans. They're being done in a die-hard fan-focused way. When the marketing properly kicks off is when they'll basically relaunch, show stuff and aim for larger mainstream attention. Plus it's less than 2 months til the Game Awards, where it's looking real likely they will show something of substance such as a new story trailer with actual details in it like showing some new characters. Darrah even speculates gameplay.

IN my opinion always the highlight of the games - the relationships you build. For me, DA has been a character driven story with some mandatory combat bits in between. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store!

"Alpha status"
Oh no. Its another Baldur's gate 3 situation. I like good companion relationships but its not worth it to take years at the expense of not even planning out the rest of the plot past the first chapter. At least they aren't charging $60 for a still unfinished game after 3 years and still don't have a complete roadmap start-finish.
As far as I remember they were still at the entrance to the dwarf fortress before you get stopped by the immersion killing live action comedy scene starring the developers. They aren't a one person army or actual small indie studio and have no business LARPing as one.

Thank you for the support though

And I was definitely feeling hype fatigue by the end. I'm hoping the marketing campaign's a little better structured, a little better paced this time.

Good news.
To be honest, companions, relationships, the story, and all that do not bother or make me excited that much. Yet.
For several reasons. First, i know that it's bioware's strong point, so i expect that i will see something good more or less. Even without that bias though, these aspects of the game are not going to put dilemmas or problems about actually playing the game. I will play it anyway and see those things unravel. It's not something that will make me hesitant about playing.
No, i am far more concerned with other aspects of the game, the basics of an RPG like, that some times developers seem to neglect, or are just not in their vision. These are things that can actually put me off.
For example, for me, the biggest downside of all Dragon Age games, were the missing of several RPG archetypes, aka its class system that puts you in a tiny box. You only have Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and then you pray that your favorite archetype will be represented through a specialization. In Dragon Age Origins, for me that was possible through Arcane Warrior, for 2 it was non existant, for Inquisition it was Knight Enchanter, but not quite. It was an attempt, but not good enough.
So not having my favorite archetype in the game somehow, in this day and age of RPGs, i would really be hesitant to play something.
Next it's customization, character customization. And not the character creator type. I mean the gear. Can i create what i envision somehow. Can i look like a knight for example, in a fantasy RPG i assume that i could. Those things are important for me, to create a character that is customizable to a point of actually looking like an archetype i have in mind, not something spectacular, but something that "fits the image" even. In Origins and DA2, we had some heavy armor for example that was okayish, but in Inquisition, things were beyond horrible. Our heaviest armor visually was a leather armor with a tiny breastplate, plated arms and shinguards/boots. Thighs without plating, midsection without plating or something, and ok, if it's your style, fine. It's not mine. I want an actual full plate armor. The only thing in Inquisition that even resembled somewhat a full plate visually was Warden Warrior Armor, a tier 2 schematic, and even that was missing things, both visually and mechanically. Don't get me started on the absurd decision to have tiers in both minerals and schematics.
In any way, i am looking forward to the game as much as anyone, but i always had problems with the core design decisions for the game, the class system, the itemization and equipment looks, that made me dread the day they would finally be revealed, only to realize that things that are for granted in other RPG games, well, do not exist in this one.
Once i see that i can actually play something i like, both mechanically and visually, i can then progress to see what type of story and characters i can create relationships with. But i can't do it if i don't even like what i'm playing as. Maybe it's just me.
It seems however, that a lot of effort is put into the writing of the characters and the relationships you can create, but not so much into how your character can look, and how inclusive the system is for several fan favorite archetypes in fantasy RPGs, aka in class roles.
Let's hope we find out something, soon. Like at least if the systems are changed somehow. Better.

So we've got the Green Fade... *snip* The Purple Fade... *snip* When do we get to go full Plaideweave...? My time to shine. I wondered if you’d take the bait on this. Legendary pic.

I like it, nothing over-hyped. It is indeed a milestone. An important one but nothing more and nothing less. I little something for established fans of the franchise.
I think this is as much as Bioware can do atm. We best remember that EA will be cranking up the marketing machine when they decide the time is ripe. They are still the publisher after all...

yes, the horror of them wanting to share updates to their sequel eight years in the making. Horror? I wouldn't say so. The marketing for this game is curious, is all. I'm glad they're making good progress. The only Horrors we'll see are those pools of grey goop with yellow-green lyrium hanging above them that lure tainted beings (darkspawn and wardens) and turn them into monsters. Those are the horrors of DA:D.
