I'm loving the game just as much as the first one! The presentation and narrative are top notch again. And some of the art designs are gorgeous beyond words, like Plainsong. Just WOW! The first story "arena" with Varl and Zo I struggled with badly. On Normal, ugh. Third try was success at last. The smaller machines just wouldn't go down. Was a complete desperate frenzy. Then the first real cauldron (Mu?) was as easy as pie. A bunch of blast traps, and they fell within seconds. That was funny! Meanwhile, I still get almost killed by the burrowers constantly when I get cocky. I'm not strong enough yet to bash everything to death with the spear. Little bastards. Those kangaroo machines are the worst so far, though. Something like 15h in I'm not even in the Forbidden West yet. But tomorrow I'll finally head there. Btw, I'm unlocking skills in almost every category. Does it make more sense to specialize in one skill tree?? One thing about the gameplay that's starting to really annoy me is how so many collectibles and puzzle ruins I cannot do yet because I'm missing the right tools. So I waste time going there only to learn it's yet another thing I can't do. Like the metal flowers. Or just breathing underwater longer. I don't remember the last game being this annoying about clearing the map... So I guess it makes sense to progress the main story a little faster so I can unlock stuff I need for exploration. I spent a long time in the Daunt before finally heading west. The world is just loaded with stuff to do, and it's more true in the Forbidden West. I fell into my usual map-crawling exploration at first, but quickly learned my lesson. There are many places Aloy can't go without special gear. I limit my wandering to near-at-hand areas, now, until I get all of the special exploration gear via story progress. It makes sense for my playstyle to focus primarily on Hunter and then on Warrior. I just wrapped up the entire Hunter tree at level 28 and am into the last few Warrior skills. I can avoid taking damage and dying by simply not sucking, but I need offensive skills to make that happen. That's my logic. Still, I made a few exceptions. I beelined to the crafting and healing efficiency boosts after getting my baseline combat skills in order. I'm talking about the ones that increase plants and the like that are looted, as well as the ones that allow you to craft more for less. I also grabbed a few in the Infiltrator/stealth tree because being able to just creep past is sometimes best. So, yeah. I dabbled all over the place, too, with a focus on combat. 😆 So this is probably a handy tip for anymore else as "slow" as me. When doing a melee combo that requires a "pause," you need to focus on the flash of Aloy's spear. Say the combo is R1 R1 R1 Pause R1, you have to time that last R1 with the flash of the spear, because that is the exact length of the pause required for the combo, otherwise the combo breaks. This is good advice. I'm just now getting to the final few combos in the melee tree. Those are the ones that build in a lot of pauses. I feel like I'm still trying to get a good feel for melee even at level 28. I'm always a bow-first player in Horizon, but melee in this game is awesome. I got into a pretty good groove yesterday and beat the crap out of three Clawstriders at once in melee. I'll be unstoppable once I start properly using the tools we're given. I'm still trying to avoid spoilers and will be spoiler-free with my comments. I played for a few hours today. I had a half-dozen quests in progress and managed to finish them all. There are some really cool little stories in this world. They've invariably been well designed, well acted, and rewarding in both story and equipment. They've done a great job with this open world. I have one more request an NPC has made that I'll address. As long as it doesn't branch into more threads, I'll get back to advancing this arm of the main story once that request is resolved.

I've been getting my ass handed to me by the melee pit boss in Thornmarsh on Normal difficulty. I changed the difficulty to Story and was pretty much undefeatable at that point. I remember a few people being worried that Forbidden West would be more difficult than Zero Dawn, and in my experience it is, but not to to worry, the game has Story as well as Easy difficulty. I noticed some gameplay sliders as well to help.

I was hoping FW would be tougher than ZD, so I'm glad to hear that it might be. Honestly, it hasn't felt harder to me, yet. I'm playing on Very Hard, something I never did in ZD on a fresh save because of the punitive gear costs. Even on VH from level 1 on up, I've been chugging along, pushing through the Green-gear grind.
So far, the biggest challenge has been getting a handle on the new capabilities. It can seem overwhelming until you get your weapons arsenal expanded. Once I realized that each weapon type has its own Valor Surge options and that I need not stress about toggling those in combat, I relaxed. I still feel like I kind of suck at the game, in a way. 😆 I'm getting by on my strong Zero Dawn skills, but I know I'll be much better off with FW once I master its techniques.
I know I'm only halfway through my first playthrough, but I can't wait for NG+. I kind of hate earning my way to all the best gear and full skill trees only to restart at level one. It will be okay a couple of times, but I feel like NG+ really gives the freedom to dive into gameplay mastery with all the skills and loadouts available to experience and master.
Anyway, I remembered an experience I wanted to share. I was exploring an area near a quest. I was in a calm, seemingly safe area, wondering what lay off in the fog on the hills above. I checked the map and saw an old world ruin.
Before I could start riding in that direction, the ground trembled, and an Apex Thunderjaw nearly got the drop on me. It came charging out of that mist at full speed and chased me for several hundred meters. I just rode. I rode heedlessly straight through other machine zones. I figured I'd probably survive them but would get literally stomped by the Thunderjaw.
I don't know what the big guy was guarding. I did creep closer and visit that ruin I'd seen on the map. He had charged from slightly northwest, though, so I'll return to visit him when I'm better equipped.

Tried playing it on my OG PS4. The fan was so loud I couldn't even hear the dialogue. I caved and bought a higher priced PS5.

Assuming WW3 doesn't break out in the meantimre I am still as impressed as I was the first day you told me how you play. It's pretty awesome. I wonder if my skills would be as good. In regard to accessibility, I agree. Gaming is one of the few areas where I mostly manage in a typical fashion. In lots of other areas, I rely on lots of tools, methods, and accessibility allowances to manage. Making anything accessible to as many as possible, be it a game, a store, a museum, or whatever else-- that should always be a priority. Thankfully, some game studios and publishers have really caught onto the importance. The good news in that regard is that Forbidden West has a ton of excellent accessibility tuners. I believe it likewise already has all the difficulty settings from Zero Dawn, excluding only Ultra Hard. (I'm sure that's in the works, along with NG+ and other stuff.) In a similar fashion to other Sony exclusives, there are so many ways to tune the experience. I use some of the accessibility options to protect my joints from hammering buttons and the like. We can tune the difficulty of individual gameplay elements, the slow-down of the weapon wheel, and lots of other stuff. It's pretty impressive.

I keep coming to the Spoilers thread to not post spoilers. 🙄😁
I knocked out a number of "side quests" today. These are so well developed in FW that it feels like a disservice to call them that. There's just so much to do in this game, and all of it is so well presented.
I also advanced the main story a decent amount, achieving some important things. The story may take an unexpected turn tomorrow. I'm excited to see what happens.
I'm really looking forward to getting better gear. Lugging around all this green and blue stuff is getting old. I think I'm level 31 or 32 now, and I really need more gear pieces that pack at least three ammo types each. It sucks to have to adjust my loadout as combat begins. I hope a flood of "purples/very rares" is coming soon.
My mildly humorous experience of the day was had when I decided to override a Clawstrider to claim as a mount. I got really lucky that I tried it without fully exiting cover. The Clawstrider that I'd carelessly chosen was an Apex Clawstrider. Frozen Wilds veterans will remember that some machines cannot be overridden. I made it and its Apex buddy go on alert, but not into aggression. Phew. I found the third Clawstrider of the group was a standard and rode away on it.
Another moment that made me smile was thunking a faceshot into a shit-talking enemy from afar with my Sharpshot bow. She was really mouthing off, and it made me laugh. Maybe I'm evil? 🤔

I've entered the Forbidden West and had another awwwww I've been there myself moment when Aloy ran over the salt flats of Death Valley. When I'm done with the game I'll probably have relived my 2016 vacation trip that was a loop through Arizona/Utah/Nevada/California, visiting many national parks. LOL. I've bought my first purple gear from the Tanakth. I'm level 20 something. Then like 10min later I got one from a quest for free..... But the one I bought I like better. I cannot yet buy purple weapons. I lack the machine parts. I try to avoid melee as much as possible because it often ends in a desperate struggle to survive and when I run out of healing I have to run away and hide, so I haven't really used the combos I unlocked recently. I keep forgetting which surge I have active. And all the new stuff is still overwhelming and unnecessary to me. Like cooking. I'm sure on higher difficulties it all makes sense. But on normal I don't need any of it. I'm one of those people who doesn't care for builds. Not sure if I'm just lazy or too stupid. I just wing everything. I've been told the older I get and the slower my reaction speed becomes I will HAVE to play strategic at some point. ...I dunno. Most games have a super easy mode these days. So hopefully I can continue my messy inefficient play style. I have no idea if the game is more difficult or if I'm just rusty and don't remember how it was in the beginning of HZD. It's not difficult on Normal for me but not so easy yet that I want to bump up the difficulty. All the new features are just super overwhelming. And there are restrictions now on how many traps you can use. And I can't craft health potions because apparently I have a total limit of 3 of any kind of potion. That's so annoying. And as said above you constantly have to switch gear because every bow does something else now. OR you can just be like me and ignore it and just kill things in a not ideal way because on Normal you really don't HAVE to optimize your loadout. Yet.

Kappa Neko, I've had similar feelings. Meals are great, but I forget to use them. Edit: If you run out of herbs/berries, you can hold Up on the D-Pad to replenish them from your reserves. There are limits to how often you can keep dipping into that well, but it shouldn't often matter. Valor Surge is amazing, but I need to get better about using it. I really suck at setting up Resonance. It says "tap R2," but I found in my experience that only a power attack sets up Resonance. I no longer use traps in FW because two traps are so few as to be irrelevant. This one is a real shame, as setting up traps was always fun for me in Zero Dawn. I particularly liked setting up traps in Corrupted Zones and before fighting Stalkers. I know I'll eventually get a few more via skills, but meh. Why not let resources be the limiting factor? The limit right now feels illogical and unnecessary. I'm still juggling weapons on and off of my wheel, but it's getting a bit better as I get better weapons. I don't think the micromanagement will every fully disappear. It's definitely more of a necessity in FW than in Zero Dawn, due to all the new ammo types, resistances, weaknesses, etc... I have played a lot over the last two days and feel like I'm finally into the heart of the game. The story has been good, and some of the places and things Aloy has visited have been amazing. At level 32, I've finally reached the point at which I'm exclusively getting Very Rare/Purples as rewards. I finally received a purple Hunter Bow to replace my greenie and wow. Suddenly, I'm once more a great player. 🙄😆 It was a long road to get to this point, but the difference in experience is immense. Every foe, human and machine, used to take arrow after arrow, despite my hitting weak points with every shot. Now, machines are dropping very quickly. I can't wait to see how those Legendary items perform in the late game. I know some are gained via the Arena, so I'll be making that a priority tomorrow. I will at least get the Armor I most want and will see about a good bow, too. I do have a question themikefest could answer. I'm nowhere near the end, but I wonder how the post-game works. Is it like Zero Dawn and ME3, saving just before the final hour? Or do we actually continue playing post-game? I'm curious since it might affect how I approach certain things.

I’m near the ending, have cleared all the map and done 95% of side stuff and I was a bit disappointed that there’s no mention of Rost hunting people in the Forbidden West. If I remember correctly, we never discovered who attacked the Nora and killed Rost’s daughter.

I've done a few things differently from the previous playthrough. Before going to the location to where the signal came from, I did everything I could. I tried going further west, but the game would not let me. To go further west I have to complete the quest involving getting GAIA backup. Note. A few minutes ago HFW had a 2gb update. Hopefully it added new game plus.

Finished the game just now and the credits are rolling. Great game. The story feels that it reached a nice conclusion and the third installment seems unnecessary.
But hey, I don't need excuses to play more in this world and have new types of machines.
I'll check the trophies and see if I'll platinum it.

If I remember correctly, we never discovered who attacked the Nora and killed Rost’s daughter. This does seem like a cool thing to learn, though also the kind of thing that you never learn in real life. Maybe it will show up in a DLC? Aloy seems to be consciously blocking out her past and feelings until her task is completed. Tracking down stories of Rost's time in the West could make a cool side quest in future expansions.

As a suggestion, I would try to do most quests since you might miss some dialogue. As an example, I didn't complete deep trouble until very late in the game whereas when I completed it much earlier, in my current playthrough, I got a couple different lines of dialogue from my previous playthrough. If I were to leave anything for after completing the game, it would be collectibles. You could do what I did. That's make a save just before starting the endgame. Complete the game, then go back to that save to complete anything you missed. I have two saves from my first playthrough that will be used for when ng+ arrives. I have gone back to those saves to collect a few things, then head back to my 2nd playthrough to move forward with the game. Since I'm moving a bit faster in my 2nd playthrough, because the first playthrough is still fresh, I will likely do everything possible before the Gemini quest.

I finally got the Arena going today. I then spent my time earning medals there instead of pursuing any of the myriad stories that were calling for my attention. I figure that I'll earn a few good pieces of gear, starting with a few of those Legendary items, and then I'll be all the better prepared for the rest of the game.
So far, I've completed the first three tiers of challenges. I got Death-Seeker's Shadow (Legendary Hunter Bow), and I'm 10 medals short of the Nora Thunder Warrior Armor (Legendary outfit for ranged specialists). I'm not sure I'm ready for Expert/Tier 4. Parts of Skilled/T3 were tough. I might need to Git Moar Gud first. I can always go do some Hunting Grounds. I've waited on those since getting all Full Stripes in the Daunt. I thought I might save them for later, but maybe later has come? I'm pretty certain that the woman at the Arena said she accepts those tokens as well.
Either way, I've got a lot to do once I get my Thunder Warrior Armor. There are quests all over the map, and still plenty of places I've not yet visited for the first time.
I'm still finding new ammo types. It's crazy. They're all really fun to use. It will take NG+, I think, to really put them all through their paces.
There are also not enough Legendary Weapons to cover every need, so those Very Rare Purples are still going to be useful. In fact, every weapon has coils to be unlocked by upgrading them. Then, you can remove the coils and use them on any weapon you wish. That's pretty cool. I can see myself progressively acquiring and upgrading every single weapon, Green through Gold, over multiple NG+.
For now, that's a distant concern, but it's something that could keep me playing this game for a long time. Looking at the upgrade costs of some items, I doubt I'll have very many pieces fully upgraded even after completing the game. I need pieces from machines I've yet to meet! That just means I have goals.

Funny how I've never seen most of these visual bugs because I don't play like that, lol. I've ever only used one hunter valor surge for ranged damage. I have like 5 others unlocked now but don't use them. ;D
The sudden black screen still happens. I had it last night again. No big deal to me though.
Haven't had any quest issues yet. Nobody got stuck anywhere. So I wouldn't know about that.
DLC is a must buy again. Looking forward to it. Frozen Wilds is excellent.
I feel like I should have more than one purple outfit and no purple weapons at level 28... And I'm still using a green ice/blast sling. The blast sling was my favorite weapon in the first game and I hate how weak ass it is now because I haven't seen even a blue upgrade I could buy anywhere. I have like four sharpshot bows that I never really use.
I was huge on traps and tripwires in the first game and the limitation here annoys me to no end. The advanced traps are totally OP though. If used on an enemy that is weak to its element it's often an instant kill. Awesome! I just wish I could place more tripwires and they feel super weak compared to traps. I have a blue fire/electro tripcaster.
Strike still feels like a super unfair game with the superior pieces that my opponents have. So not unlike Gwent, lol. Sometimes they just bleed you round for round, taking 1 HP off while they stay in their corner and watch you die. I was doing OK for a while but now I'm stuck with one dude on his second board. No combination of pieces works. Might have to play against another NPC first..
The way I progress quests is based on their level. If sidequests are lower than main quests I do them first. I have indeed noticed that characters comment on your past deeds, that's nice.
Btw Kotallo is awesome. His grumpy conversations with Aloy are cute as hell. I assume she doesn't get to have a love interest again because world saving mission and all?
Back to the game!

I finished the game yesterday. Overall, I really like it, but I don't think it's as good as the first one.
Anyway, now that I'm done, I'll probably complete some side content and try to get the platinum trophy.

Here's a tip or two for folks that might help in your playthrough.
Before starting The Kulrut quest, I upgraded all my equipment. The problem I had with that is some materials required were from machines I yet encountered. I went to Sheerside Mountains hunting grounds near The Bulwark. The hunting grounds have 2 bellowbacks and 1 rollerback. Both had the materials I needed. Instead of doing the challenge, I went to the far left, close to the edge where I was able to use my bow on the machines. Since I had fire arrows, the machines were easy pickings. The problem I ran into was the machines would run away to the other side of the grounds making it hard to hit them. So I had to get closer. I used the glider to get to the left. Move forward far enough to where I was in range. What helps is having a precision arrow that is good for long range. Hitting the machine will cause it to get closer to you to use your fire arrows. WARNING!!! They will fire back very quickly. The other good thing about this is gaining experience points. It helped when facing Regalla and her minions.
Doing the above was enough to use the arena to be able to get the Forgefall bow.
I find upgrading pouches is number one instead of weapons since pouches contain the ammo needed for whatever you're doing. It sucks trying to craft ammo when being attacked. Having those couple extra arrows or whatever makes a difference.

Killed my first thunderjaw with three acid traps very quickly, LOL.
I read up on how to improve water breathing because I think there's a sidequest I cannot do yet about diving. So you get it from the Poseidon main quest. I haven't even finished the questline for the other yet that is lowest level. I'm not sure right now but I believe the sidequest is lower level, so that's a bit weird. Unless I'm mistaken, can't check right now.
So much stuff blocked behind unlocks. In Biomutant I liked it, here I don't.

Killed the boss of the Posaidon quest with two trip wires and a shock trap in seconds. This is getting ridiculously easy!
Btw my favorite quest in the game so far. Absolutely mesmerizing storytelling! Beautiful presentation. Just amazing.
I did not expect the other main quests to get locked by doing it before doing the Kulrut. Huh. OK. Let's see where this leads...
