Beautiful. I would make those photos my desktop if I could.
If possible, if I can copy them...would you mind if I saved them to use as my own desktop images? If you don't mind.

I have finished the Hunting Grounds! While they were a lot easier than the ones in the previous game (once I understood what was asked of me), there were two that had me almost rage quit: the worst was the one where you need to shock an enemy and then bury them under one of the environmental traps. They would ALWAYS break down JUST out of reach of those tree trunks/rocks. I thought I was gonna go crazy, lol. Took me 10 tries or something. The other was using the tremortusk cannons to shoot the 3 clawstriders. I got knocked on my ass so often it was a real struggle to get a shot in. Easy in theory, a bitch to execute. Took maybe 5 tries. But it really enraged me...
Went back to base to get the last round of talks in before the big battle but first I need to take Erend on a final mission to hunt down an evil woman now that I've done all outposts too.
In retrospect I played the game as wrong as can be. My recommendation is: do the hunting grounds and melee pits as soon as possible because they actually teach you how to play the game! After 100h with the game I only now have learned that you get extra damage if you catch the shredder 3,4(?) times in a row. I use the shredder but I guess I never paid attention. And always catching it is actually not easy. Especially when you're close to the enemy. Oh man... I also didn't know about the plasma state countdown until yesterday. Ridiculous!
I now have three legendary weapons: the hunter bow (arena), the shredder (Stemmur collectibles, I believe?) and the tripwire from the hunting grounds. Too bad tripwires suck ass here. Maybe this one won't. Haven't tested it out yet. Too bad that the the gear from the hunting ground medals are also useless so late in the game...
Imo there's a huge flaw in the restrictions to exploration based on main story progress. You cannot clear the map until halfway through the game. So what's the point in getting all the good stuff when you're almost done with the game? Although I'm not sure if the collectibles that get you a legendary item are blocked behind tools.
In any case, unlock the map (and important settlements) as fast as you can, do the trials as early as you can. Progress the main story faster than side missions. And if you like Strike, don't bother beyond the beginner level until you have blue pieces. So Strike is something to do later. Because the resources you'll need you'll eventually have. I've now purchased all but the legendary piece without grinding for it. Just had a lot of stuff accumulated.

I had a horrible time trying to catch the shredder, eventually I got mad and started dropping bombs everywhere. Now that I know how the shredder works, still not gonna use it. Haha. Good point on the Hunting trials, I could be wrong but the trials in Zero Dawn felt like it was more about testing your mastery, but as you say Forbidden West is trying to teach you, the time limits also seemed much more forgiving. I think that's why I stayed away until the end of the game, when your gear would make things much easier. When I did the plasma trial, Element Zero had already informed us how it works, so the poor machines really didn't stay alive long enough to do the trial properly, I still got credit though. Until Zero's previous post I didn't know or care how targeting arrows work, oh so that's why my overridden machines seem pretty much useless most of the time. Speaking or overriding machines and machine combat, I go back and forth on whether I like all the new steps, or if I think its needless bloat.
^Most of the time I send a machine into battle, they fight like Homer Simpson. LOL.

I did more hunting today.
If the machines log isn't evidence enough, I can confirm that the Slaughterspine is the big daddy. I killed two consecutive Apex Slaughterspines earlier in order to get parts. They're L64. (The Apex Fireclaw is L60.)
The first one, I crushed. The second was going well, until it one-shot killed me by running over me. I kicked its butt on the second attempt. The key is to not let them get their belly-mounted weapon going. That's the one that causes plasma to erupt from the ground.
I took down a pair of Apex Tremortusks but did it intelligently. I killed one while the other slowly lumbered our way. It arrived as its compatriot died, and then it died. That was nice, getting all those needed Apex parts so quickly.
I took a break for a while to just fly and enjoy the game. All my hunting keeps me in the far West, but I miss the East. So, I went back to the Daunt and just lazily flew back West over Plainsong and the northern parts of the map. I killed a few groups of ex-Rebels causing trouble. I even got to loot an effortless Thunderjaw after they killed it, and I killed them. Eventually, I saw good targets and went back to hunting.
I've fully upgraded Forgefall, the Legendary Sharpshot Bow. It hits like a cannon.
I have my Nora Thunder Warrior Armor at L3. That improved and added some perks and also unlocked both weave slots. The weaves included are awesome (Valor and Stamina), and I can now also rotate in Override Duration +2 as needed. With that, assuming you have all the machinist skills, your overrides last indefinitely.
I still have Carja's Bane and Death-Seeker's Shadow at L3 and L4, respectively. I think I'll get those to L5 and then start on Wings of the Ten (blast sling).
The other Hunter Bow, Sun Scourge, is critical to my gameplay style but is great already at L1. It primes often on the first shot and only requires three arrows for even the toughest Apex machines.
I look forward to getting all my weapons leveled and into my rotation. The Shredders, Blasters, and all the rest are actually really powerful and fun. I likely won't truly master their use until NG+. That's when and how I mastered and created a niche for all the HZD weapons.

I am 10 skill points short of maxing out my skills. (Those 10 skill points would bring two Valor Surges from the Trapper from L2 to L3.)
I could get exactly 10 SP from completing every tier of "Strike." I have no desire to play this board game. It's way too involved. I play VGs to enjoy their worlds, not fish (still don't have the AC Valhalla platinum) or play fantasy chess.
I think they patched out the ability to get extra SP from the Arena. Does anyone know for sure? I can check for myself the next time I get to play, of course; but if so it's damn annoying. I feel like a board game within a game should be an optional side activity, like Valhalla's Orlog, rather than something tied directly to character progression.
It's a minor thing, I guess, but it annoys me. Maybe we'll easily earn the extra SP in a NG+ run, with the entire game replayable. It still annoys me. 🙄😉

Did a few things on the side. Like the first game, I'm taking the long way to the next story destination (in this case "Death's Door") by going to different encounters along the way.

Good point on the Hunting trials, I could be wrong but the trials in Zero Dawn felt like it was more about testing your mastery, but as you say Forbidden West is trying to teach you, the time limits also seemed much more forgiving. Yes, exactly my impression. I haven't played HZD in 5 years but I perceived it as showing your mastery with various weapons. I remember one trial, was it in the DLC?, where you had a limited amount of arrows and if you missed just once you couldn't beat it. That one was REALLY tough. Took me quite a while to manage. The Hunting Grounds of FW really feel like a tutorial. Same with the melee pits. I've only done one or two pits. I hate melee combos. I assume there's a legendary weapon waiting at the end too? I still have to win the final race. The one before took me three attempts. I don't expect to win against Red Teeth (?) easily. I both like and hate the races. I think I'm actually going to stall the final mission until I've done everything. Last night I finally found the last black box. And of course I had JUST upgraded my purple blast sling when I got the legendary one. Sigh. I have done all drones too, still have to turn 3 in though. I'm not sure if going to Gaia to drop them off will trigger the final mission. Btw why don't the drone landscapes I pick stay? Is this actually intended or a bug? I really wish the room would keep the background I picked... The only collectibles left I need to finish are the viewpoints. There's on below the Vegas settlement. I thought I was supposed to go outside but apparently not? Not sure if that's the last one. I actually find the viewpoints very annoying and not fun to do. Last night I got ambushed by a thunderjaw way at the fringes of the snowy top of the map with the green pond of sorts nearby. It literally popped into existence out of nowhere and was immediately hostile. I thought it had to be guarding something at least, but nope. There was nothing there, lol! What a waste of time! The amount of Dreadwing fangs and Tremortusk tusks I'd need to upgrade the legendary gear is ridiculou! I don't think I'll be doing that... I like the idea of the flying mount but it's still way faster to fast travel. That being said seeing the pretty world from above is nice. And pop-ins aren't even bad surprisingly. By chance I found another errand in one of the small settlements after defeating Regalla. Which ended in a really tough fight against an apex Dreadwing. I was out of healing by the time I took down the other machines and then there's the surprise boss at the end. I took it down with plasma arrows but it was a close call. Somehow didn't even manage to harvest a fang, sigh. Didn't get a heart either. Ugh. And all this for some greenshine. Btw where can I get more greenshine slab?? I have a ton of frgaments but had too few slabs to upgrade my purple weapons. And then when I finally had enough for the blast sling I got the legendary one, noooo. I have two legendary hunter bows now, huh. Somehow I thought there would be only one of each kind. They don't have overdraw though. Is this something I can unlock or do some bows simply not have it? Overdraw used to do a lot more damage. I want it back! Is there any point to the boltblaster? It's SO slow it's basically unusable imo. I really don't like heavy weapons in this game. My purple sharpshot bow has super slow drawspeed too though. Maybe I should make all coils better draw speed... Six legendary weapons in my possession but only one legendary outfit. Can I get legendary outfits aside from the salavage contract outside of the arena? The ones from the arena are so ugly! Artificer is sexy at least but it's melee. So ehhhh. Why are all the trapper outfits so damn fugly!?

Man, I SUCK at the arena bosses. When I have my own gear I steamroll through it with traps. But I almost rage quit at the intermediate boss battle with the annoying tideripper. Took 5-6 times and then made it with just one second to spare!
I do not understand how people manage in 30seconds. Since the loadout is set, how does that work? I guess other people don't get constantly knocked on their asses... I have zero crowd control skills in this game. So half of the time I can't attack because of the insane speed with with the machines attack and whip me around. By the time I've reloaded the boltblaster I get kncoked offy feet again. I still get trapped between machines unable to get away a lot. I'm dumb apparently. No idea how anybody can do this stuff on anything higher than Normal. I'm considering lowering the difficulty for the arena but so far my pride forbids it, lol.
The next tier final fight I got done faster after failing spectacularly at first. Even got killed a few times. Managed with maybe 20 seconds to spare in the end.
Expert lower challenges still a breeze. No enemy can withstand several epic traps, hehehe. But I know I'm going to start crying when I start the boss one. I'm kind of dreading it. Put it off for a few hours, letting my hands rest after that frenzy, lol. But I want the gear! I've only been able to buy two weapons, both bows. Apex Dreadwing sounds like a nightmare... Gotta try once now and if I can't even get half the HP down when the time is up I'll put it off until...maybe never.
Edit: LOL managed on my second attempt! First time I was 8 seconds too slow because the burrower spawned that didn't the second time. Huh.
Edit2: OK, nope nope nope on the final challenge. I have ZERO idea how to kill the apex thunderjaw with the weapons at my disposal. I had like 4min left after the scorcher died and I didn't even get its health halfway down... Granted, things were too frantic for me to pick up its cannons. But I doubt that would have made a difference. There's a strategy/synergy here I don't see. Like, I've never used that particular type of ropecaster before. Didn't even know how it worked. I've looked it up now. Maybe that is the trick... Too tired now to try again. I've got all outfits now, I don't really care to get the legendary boltblaster. So I'll maybe return to this postgame at some point.

WTF
The game temporarily fried my console!!! I wanted to do a manual save after beating the last race and the console froze, went black, the fan went crazy and then it shut down and was unresponsive for several minutes. I thought my console had died!
Scariest thing every... Holy shit!
Then it booted up, did some kind of storage repair and now everything is fine.
Has something like that ever happened to anyone with any game?? What the hell was that?!
I'm so glad my savefile is still there. Not sure what I would have done if my console died or my save gor destroyed. Probably cried and then sent a request for a new console to Guerilla who would have laughed it off because who can prove that.
Jesus fucking Christ...

Kappa, did you say you "almost rage-quit annoying strippers" ? *Mental picture of Kappa losing her sh*t at a strip joint because the stripper wouldn't take "no, thank you" for an answer* (Pauses, shakes head) Oh. No...sorry I read that incorrectly. I had to re-read the post twice to make sure I read it correctly rather than just glancing at it.
Never heard of any game frying a console; I'm picturing sparks flying and smoke coming out of the vents. How close am I? That must've been scary and worrysome. Glad it worked itself out though.

Kappa Neko, I had the same thing happen to my PS4Pro a couple of weeks ago. I had to unplug it to even get it to restart. Hard crashes suck. I also had a similar experience with that same Thunderjaw. One minute, I'm sitting on my Charger looking around. The next, I'm riding as quickly as possible to escape the Apex Thunderjaw in hot pursuit. 😄 Now, though, I've started preferentially hunting Apex machines for my upgrades. Even if one specific upgrade doesn't specify "Apex heart," or whatever, another certainly will. I now have a good number of legendaries fully upgraded. I have the following, as best as I can remember: Nora Thunder Warrior Armor L5 Death-Seeker's Shadow (hunter bow) L5 Carja's Bane (warrior bow) L5 Forgefall (sharpshot bow/sniper rifle) L5 and Wings of the Ten (blast sling) L3 I'll reach L5 on all my legendary weapons, then I'll upgrade a few purples that have niche uses. (An elemental sling, a purgewater bow, and a particular ropecaster come to mind.) After that, I'll upgrade the Oseram Artificer and Carja Stalker legendary outfits. Kappa and I have reversed preferences on outfit aesthetics. I think the Carja have beautiful outfits. I love all the fine materials, layers, and colors. The legendary one is okay, but the lesser ones are amazing. Unless transmog happens, though, I'm unlikely to use them for looks alone. I like the Oseram stuff. Most of it looks cool. I wish the Artificer armor looked more like armor. I think the best melee outfit in the game should look heavier. It should look on par with the Vanguard outfit. The Nora stuff is cool. The Thunder Warrior immediately appealed to me, and it is far and away the best outfit for a ranged, concentration-based playstyle. It's so freaking good. As for weapon types, they're all awesome. The boltcasters are machine guns when used with the burst fire technique. They can really chew through a machine while also getting full build-up of your chosen element. My Forbidden West loadout looks much like my Zero Dawn loadout, just with the bigger wheel accommodating some new additions. I typically roll with the following, clockwise from the top: Death-Seeker's Shadow (hunter bow) * all-around performer, great impact and tear, along with shock and targeting arrows Sun Scourge * can apply frost, fire, or acid with extreme efficiency Carja's Bane * great impact and tear on the cheap, crazy fast, great when mixing in melee, also has fire and acid Wings of the Ten * the best blast sling, because often just blowing shit up is enough Skykiller * best spike-thrower for damage, explosion and/or fire Forgefall * this thing is like a heavy sniper rifle with impact + tear, as well as plasma * this bow can end fights with Apex machines before they really begin by hitting weak points from advantageous positions, mixing in Valor Surges and special shots

So there's no trophy for beating the arena??! Or is there no trophy for doing it in story mode because that's what I did after dying within 20 seconds ten times in a row on normal... I don't even know how I managed to kill the scorcher yesterday. Their damage output is insane and I don't know how to doge that thing. Also: why is it that I have medals to spare and nothing to buy anymore at the arena? The hunting ground medals were just enough to buy everything. Strange. Can't believe how easy the arena is on story difficulty, my god. Normal feels like overkill already at the end. How is anybody supposed to do this on Very Hard?? I literally cannot dodge 90% of the attacks and two in a row kill you. Truly baffling god level skills requires imo.
I still have 3 hidden trophies missing and I have no clue which ones they could be aside from the melee pit one perhaps. I did everything else!
I beat all strike players. Expected SOME kind of unique reward from the master. But nope. Btw I beat almost all boards with a tideripper/clamberjaw combo. There are probably a number of good combinations but that won worked so I ran with it. Too lazy to try other combinations. I assume strike difficulty varies depending on your difficulty setting as well. Since I'm a strategy moron, Normal is as challenging as I can endure without getting too annoyed. *g*
I might call it a day and not get the platinum trophy since I don't care for this stuff. I got it without effort in HZD just doing everything. Didn't even check. One day the platinum trophy just popped up.
Somehow this game is trying to be an ass about everything, lol.

I wonder if you got cheated of any trophies by bugs? I initially didn't get the "kill all combat machines" trophy. It was later unlocked after killing more Corrupters in the Arena.
There's a trophy for scanning all machines that many seem to miss because they didn't scan the final boss.
The Melee Pit is definitely a trophy. The Enduring is worth fighting, even if you do it on Story. There was a cool story about The Enduring themself. Also, the pits teach melee combat the way the hunting grounds teach machine combat.
Other hidden trophies... hmm. There are quests for Zo, Kotallo, and Erend. There are trophies for killing at least one of each category of machine, IIRC, but I imagine you got that long ago. I can't recall what's hidden and what isn't.
I was a bit disappointed that there was no difficulty based trophy, though I knew that in advance. They'll maybe add NG+ and Ultra Hard trophies, like they did with Frozen Wilds.
I've fought Scorchers differently in Forbidden West than in Zero Dawn. In the Frozen Wilds, I found that you had to roll toward them so they'd jump over Aloy. Anything else got me stomped. I'm not sure if that still applies. In Forbidden West, they felt easier to disable, so I focused on shooting the thing on their butts to begin the fight, and then the mine launcher on their backs.

I got the scanned all machines trophy. I did all companion quests. So is there really none for the arena? Because I kept getting this weird "Arena failed" pop-up bug all the time at some point close to the end. Even after beating strike, something unrelated. My late game got pretty buggy... So wouldn't be surprised if stuff bugged out.
Doesn't really matter. Just wondering.
Now that I'm done with the game there's like a gaping hole inside me and I don't know what to do with myself, lol. Now I have to return to reality and deal with various actual problems like finding a better paying job because with those gas prices it's not funny anymore. Ughhhh. The game was such a nice distraction from everything... Sigh.

Sigh. As far as I recall, there's a trophy for opening the Arena, but none for completing all the challenges. Edit: The trophy is for completing the first set of challenges. You could just unhide the hidden trophy to see what's missing. Select the hidden trophy with X and press □ to reveal it. Hidden trophies are often story related. It's not like you'll ruin the story. I think one of the hidden ones might've been linked to Dekka and her grandson. Did you do that story? She's the chaplain of the Lowland Tenakth. I have all 6 of my primary weapons and my primary armor upgraded to level 5. I still have 3 more legendary weapons and 4 more legendary outfits to upgrade. I might take a break now. I'd love to replay the story and just enjoy the world via NG+, but I don't expect that before the summer. I think it will soon be time to move on. I don't want to burn out. Edit: I checked for easily missed trophies. There is one for using flowers to dye an outfit. Just buying new colors won't trigger it. You must pay with flowers. There is one for gliding uninterrupted for 60 seconds. That one is easy from many tall peaks. I got it early, gliding from the peaks above the Base into the desert around the first Tenakth settlement. There's one for completing two quests that require flight. There are several. There is one at the Bulwark and one in the Quen camp at Land's Fall (?)/SF.

SofaJockey, weren't we talking about the apocryphal Apex Scrounger a few weeks ago? I think that was the one. Anyway, I scanned and killed several in the Daunt. They were at their usual hangout south of the river. I saw those Scroungers while just wandering the map. I frequently start that type of thing from the Daunt. Tonight, I put on my Carja Trader outfit for style and started walking. Those purples are where all the greenshine matters, it would seem. Yikes. Now, I feel Kappa Neko's pain. Kappa, you asked about where to find the slabs. I mostly find them in hard to reach and easy to overlook places. Edit: As cool as my wordy post that follows undoubtedly is, I just realized there's probably an easy way to get what you need. If you're lacking a slab to buy or upgrade, just create a Job. The map icon will presumably lead you straight to the nearest slab. I've found many in waterfalls, underwater, and/or guarded by large machines. There's one on the tall stone column that the elevator passes when first entering the Daunt. I noticed it glimmering in a screenshot I'd captured, and I finally went back and got it tonight. I think I once collected one on the arm of a Horus titan, right next to an oblivious, perched Skydrifter. I just climbed up there and took it. That could've been a sliver. I can't recall 100 hours of gameplay later. I found another slab tonight off the map a bit in No Man's Land. If you stay along the southern edge of the map after leaving Barren Light, it's atop a protruding, peaked cliff. It will be just after the mountains that form the boundary start bending south. You can see it from the ground with your Focus, and I think there's also one of those Y-shaped rapelling points. I've found others well into the black, off the map. You can explore atop any mountains that are within the edges of the map, even if they're black on the map. I've found lots of stuff doing that, including greenshine, hidden caves, machine sites, etc... You can also roam pretty far off the edges of the map in many places before getting the warning to turn back. The flooded caves are full of greenshine, of course. There's at least one cave you might've missed atop the mountains, not terribly far from the western coast, IIRC. That cave was behind Sunwings and Stalkers, both of which I simply bypassed by climbing further south and gliding in behind them. The cave itself had a swimming Burrower that I had to lure out and kill, and then maybe some Clamberjaws. It's hard to differentiate the caves so long after. I was surprised by how much it cost to upgrade one Very Rare outfit. I hope I don't regret that expenditure when I go to upgrade my useful purple weapons. Speaking of upgrades, I might put the game on Story and wipe out the rest of my legendary upgrades. I feel like I've more than earned an easier ride the rest of the way after so many epic battles to get to 7 level-5s. Every one of those fights could be the featured encounter in a short story! That's why I love the hard difficulties, because they make me fight for everything. Still, I have a lot of stories now and might give myself a break. 😁

Here's final verdict on the game's storytelling and plot (wall of text incoming!): I thought the main story went downhill fast when the Far Zenith villains were introduced. The first half of the story about restoring Gaia was fine. I wish they had left it at that and maybe made Regalla into a bigger threat. Or even made Sylens a Solas-like villain. I was actually expecting him to be a major character and he was, in the background, but ultimately he didn't have much screen time at all. And the story made him look foolish in the end so that the female characters could outshine him by a mile and I didn't like that sentiment. His decision to stay on Earth is an interesting development though. I didn't expect that. Thought he was going to make an exit for real. Going to be interesting how it plays out. I thought the main plot was honestly atrocious. Thebes was such a low point. Ted Faro alive as some kind of off screen monstrosity?! And worse, he wasn't just an arrogant idiot who got humanity wiped out. Oh no, he was also a complete creep with a harem! WTF, who writes shit like this?! And they didn't stop there, the CEO as another evil white guy on top of it was too much. That was a total parody. Absolutely painful to watch. One of the worst missions of any game. Just plain bad. It really pains to say this about the main plot. And it's so disappointing and strange considering how AMAZING the side content is. The Vegas storyline is one of the best written things I've ever seen in gaming. It was so charming and mesmerizing. Just perfect. They CAN write great stuff. So what the actual fuck happened there with the main story?? Far Zenith made Corypheus look like great writing in comparison... Granted, there were individual scenes of the main story that I really liked. Like Aloy and Beta. That conversation where Aloy gets so frustrated and cannot understand how somebody with the exact same genes could be this passive negative miserable thing. And then she realizes why. Because she didn't have Rost, somebody who loved her and built up her confidence. And I LOVED that scene. Thank you for saying this. For acknowledging that fathers are very important too. Refreshing after all the subtle and not so subtle man bashing going on. How Aloy grows to care for Beta was great. Btw I was really impressed how Ashley Burch worked with her voice. She sounded very different as Beta, almost like a different person. She nailed Beta's broken character with her voice. I know some people don't like the voice actress and how she pauses a lot while speaking but I love her voice. Not Jennifer Hale awesome but her voice is perfect for Aloy for me too. All the voice actors did movie quality work. These characters all felt so alive and real. Excellent casting. In general, it was so awesome to see Aloy transform into a leader and accept and own that role. She's Guerilla's Shepard. There are so many parallels there, both in personality and narrative structure around finding people who'd do anything for her. Inspiring such fierce loyalty. Aloy has become a total warrior goddess. The shy awkward teenage girl gone (for the most part), replaced by an unflinching defender of the tribes of Earth, defender of people who have not been kind to her as a child. Seeing Aloy embrace friendship was heart warming. From outcast to beloved hero is an awesome journey. Definitely rivalling Shepard's cult status at the end. A true legend born. So that was great stuff which was better told through her work with the tribes and her interactions with her companions, rather than that silly goofy main plot. I did like Tilda's character though. Now OF COURSE the only one with some humanity left is a woman and the biggest assholes of the bunch are white men, again. Ugh. The sadistic psychopath had to be white, naturally. Couldn't he be... Asian or something? Or a woman? That annoyed me. I'm tired of this narrative. Everybody does it now. The moment Tilda said she knew Sobeck I thought, ah romance incoming. At first it wasn't said and I thought I was wrong for once. But of course that was a given. Super cliche too for 2022 but at least it's a credible reason why she would betray the Zeniths. Which in hindsight makes her fascination with Aloy more than a little creepy and I wish her story didn't end the way it did with that dumb ass contrived boss fight. Did she really have to get this creepy about taking an improved version of Elisabet with her to maybe rekindle what she lost? I don't mind uncomfortable stuff but that felt like such a waste. They needed a boss fight and so they made a very unoriginal one. Felt out of place. Would have preferred her to either sacrifice herself for the cause to redeem herself or just leave alone and die alone like Sobeck. I guess Guerilla wanted to show that they're all too far gone and ultimately selfish. Which is fine. But her thinking she could just take Aloy with her was so lame. Surely she was smartened than to expect Aloy would agree?? Stupid resolution to the plot. Also the entire assault on the base was super lame. The final battle in HZD was amazing. Seeing all the people she helped join the fight. And how it played out was great. Felt really exciting and earned and rewarding. Here you just fight past lame specters and then face the sadist and then Tilda. Both fights were dull and very JRPG-ish which in my book is not a good thing anymore. At least we were spared fighting monster Faro... The story was never going to be as good as the one from the first game. The whole mystery around who Aloy is was something they were never going to repeat. That emotional rollercoaster was amazing even if the plot itself was already quite silly. But it was a well crafted story. And when Aloy finally finds Sobeck I cried like a baby. Aloy finds Shepard basically and then in Forbidden West she becomes Shepard. So there's some thematic consistency at least, lol. And I can't wait for the reapers to arrive in the third game of this trilogy. So ME2 had that silly god awful human reaper fight at the end and Forbidden West had silly Specter Tilda. Oh well. Both games were about people and not the plot. But at least ME2 had that awesome reveal who the collectors are while FW has... mutant Faro. Ehhhhhh.... Also, the idea that Sylens managed to build a weapon that strips the Zenith shields felt like very lazy writing. They didn't explain it because you can't explain that away. These immortal beings getting tricked like that was just silly. Them being immortal in the first place was so unnecessary. Why couldn't they just be descendants from the Old Ones? Maybe as ignorant of Earth and its history as the people on Earth were about the old world? Anything but sparkly vampires would have been nice... I'm kind of apprehensive of what the writing of this game means for the plot of the third game. But as long as there's awesome character writing and great sidequests again I can forgive it. Despite my major gripes with the plot it's still a 10/10 game for me. Or maybe 9.5. Top 10 best games of all time for me along with HZD. Because they improved on everything else. Maaaybe with the exception of the flavor choices they got rid of except in 3 cases I think? I was expecting them to go even more the BioWare route and have more minor choices or at least even more ways to shape Aloy a bit to the player's liking. But there was basically none of it here. That was disappointing. Not a big deal for me and I'm okay with Aloy not following Shepard's footsteps here and banging everything that moves. Girl got no time for that! But I do consider it a step back that they ditched the choice to select a tone with people. One super minor personal thing I was hoping for that I knew wasn't gonna happen but still: In the beginning it was nice that Aloy could sort of continue showing interest in Avad. I had her respond favorably to his advances in HZD and I was happy that I could have her say she'd like to come visit him when all this is over. But of course this didn't happen because this shit isn't over. So I'm hoping in the third game Aloy DOES get a proper love interest at the end. If she survives, that is. I could imagine her being terrified of romance more than the end of the world, not knowing how to just live her life now after spending her whole life fighting for survival. I'd like to see her try. Elisabet died alone. No matter how it ends for Aloy, she'll die among friends. Either way, I'm ready for the tears! *g* What did you guys think of Varl's death? I did not expect him to die right there. I thought Tilda would pull some space magic resurrection spell on him. I was kinda shocked. I was apprehensive of some of the companions dying at the end but not before. And then Zo tells Aloy she's pregnant, oh man. That was so tragic. Very well done storytelling though. I just wish he'd lived. He was a great guy. So not exactly like ME2's suicide mission where everyone could make it. I loved all the companions. Ava the least perhaps but they were all well written. Kotallo was especially awesome. Now I'm torn between Avad and Kotallo as love interests haha. Sorry Erend. He's the greatest sad guy ever written but Garrus bromance is as far as it goes with him for me. That drink before the final mission had such Mass Effect vibes, man! I wish Varl had a companion quest too... Oh, I did not expect Nil to be Red Teeth. I didn't even recognize him with the face paint. He was the hottest guy in HZD, that face paint does not do him any favors, lol. But was great to see him again. I just wish Aloy had been a little less disgusted. I remember her kinda playing along with his antics in HZD, no? I think you can even flirt back. So I thought it was slightly out of character that suddenly she's creeped out by him. I mean, hello, that's Nil, your friendly psychopath! Go with the flow, Aloy, and be nice to him, will you?! Guy fought for you after all! I'm very curious to hear how you all liked the story. I'm very tempted now to replay HZD. It's been five years and I've forgotten a lot. Thing is I never owned the game, my ex boyfriend did. So I'd have to buy it again but the game is not as cheap as I expected. So I dunno. Would really like to do a proper comparison of the storytelling and gameplay between the two games.

I've checked the trophies (didn't know they could be unhidden, thanks) and it's: 1. Melee Pit (obviously) 2. Gliding (wtf, I've glided from the highest peaks plenty of times!) 3. The dye (I didn't even know I could pay with flowers, lol!) So good guess, Zero! According to the internet there really are (only) 28 sidequests. So I found them all, cool. As long as I didn't miss any quests/content I'm good. Only thing left to do now is maybe upload my hiking apocalypse edition screenshots of scenery. I took almost none of Aloy or machines this time around. That's so 2017, lol.

Doing some stuff on the side before heading further West. Trying to at least scale as much of the eastern part of the map as possible.

I've just watched clips of Aloy talking with Nil in HZD and my god has Ashley Burch's acting improved! I don't recall her being this flat. I'm actually shocked how different she sounded. I remember those wooden facial animations though, haha. I have even more appreciation for Forbidden West's voice cast now. Damn...
Also, boy, was Aloy snarky in HZD! I had forgotten how much. Which makes total sense for a teenager who's had it rough. Very believable defense mechanism. She's really a completely different person in FW. Grown up, empathetic, kind. Doesn't have her guard up much anymore because she's confident now and determined.
Great great character growth. Perfect.
