Assassins Creed Shadows

Late to the party:
I should be all over this since I graduated from uni with Japan Studies as a major but I really don't care about samurai. AT ALL. The Yasuke gameplay completely put me off the game. The slow brutality is not my cup of tea. Maybe if I ignore him completely and focus on the stuff that actually makes sense for AC, ninja assassin...

Also, there goes my chance of playing a Japanese male character. Sigh. Of course they picked the obscure black historical figure to be "cool" and earn diversity points. As if that's the only group of people need representing these days, ugh!

Granted, this is purely selfish but Asian male is the most underrepresented minority in all of Western media. And now we have a game set in friggin Japan and we still don't have one!
I have a huge thing for Japanese men and this just blows on the eye candy front, not gonna lie.

I loved Odyssey because Kassandra had an amazing VA but didn't really much care for the time period nor the plot. But sure was a beautiful game. And I did like a lot of the side quests. My fav AC game is still Origins. Loved Bayek and the plot around his son. Adored the setting. So maybe I can enjoy Shadows just for the beautiful landscapes if nothing else... At some point for 10 bucks max.

Btw is Mirage that bad? I skipped Valhalla but was going to buy Mirage because I dig the setting. Then I saw the lukewarm reviews.

Well, the diversity thing has backfired as there is a large backlash (a 30,000+ signature petition) re the male protagonist not being Japanese and some of the history:

That petition seems so dumb. It's not like they are going to scrap years of work and remake the game.

I think choosing Yasuke over a Japanese protagonist was a mistake. It's not like western entertainment media is overflowing with Asian male representation. They'll say they wanted to have an outsider's perspective for one of their protagonists, and that this was the only reason they chose Yasuke. Someone might even believe that.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Yasuke will be a cool character, well acted, etc... In this particular case, any hamfisted decision-making behind the scenes isn't going to meaningfully impact the game. Whether it's good or disappointing, it won't be because we're playing Yasuke instead of a Japanese samurai.

My opinion is even if it was a Japanese character that would have been just as much of a controversy as well for people, so I don't think it would have any change either way.  For if playing a Japanese character is so important to people there is one in the game, but I bet they are being overlooked due to gender.

I am thinking it might be worse than that with both of them being bland and generic outside of anything that is specific to each character, so they don't have to account for which character you are playing at that time.  I am still disappointed that they didn't learn from Syndicate where a lot of the complaints I saw were based on how they handled the two protagonist aspect of the game.

Even my 4080 is giving this game the side-eye.
