So, The Expanse just premiered internationally on Netflix yesterday! Who's watching it? I've just seen the first episode yet but as a fan of the books (currently listening to Cibola Burn, no spoilers please! ) it holds up really well! Looks incredibly well made, especially for being a tv show. Could've passed for a movie to be honest. Haven't quite gotten used to the actors yet. They're not bad at all, just doesn't quite fit my mental images of the characters. Naomi seems to be the best fitting so far, Holden and Amos was a bit further off. Looking forward to seeing them fleshed out some more. In case you haven't watched it (and enjoy sci-fi, but with as many Mass Effect fans as there are around here I'm sure you do), please do! The books are of course even better and have quickly risen to the top of my sci-fi favorites, up there with Peter F. Hamilton's works. Looking forward to catching some more epsisodes soon!

I watched the whole first series, think it was sometime earlier this year or late last year, can't remember when the whole season aired on Syfy, looking forward to the next season. Definitely one of the more interesting shows out there currently and probably the best Scifi show, that I know of that's still airing.

It starts really well, gives you lil tidbits of info on things, then when you start to see the larger scale of it. It is pretty good. I especially enjoyed when you got to learn more about Mars, their military and how the looked. One of my favorite moments on the show.

I watched it here in the US when it came out on SyFy, it really hooked me in. I have the first two books here, but I can't bring myself to read them yet, until the next season comes out. Just skimming through, it looks like the first season covers about half the first book.
My experience has been that if I read something first, I won't enjoy the TV/Movie of it as much, but if I read the book afterwards, I end up enjoying both.

Since the books are almost always a lot better than the adaptation it's hard to get disappointed with them. It'll be interesting to see how the show holds up, but I'm hopeful!

I have the first season on DVD and I've just started watching it. At last some *real* SF on the screen. A true rarity.
I've read all the books and I expect the show to skip significant plot aspects, but that's ok, depending on what they cut. I love the aesthetic so far. Some characters take a little getting used to since they differ from how I envisioned them in the books, but that's ok, too.

I've been reluctant to pick up the books because I want to watch the show without preexisting expectations. Then again, I'm kinda reversed on Game of Thrones, I've been reluctant to catch up on the show ever since they went past the books. I guess it just depends on which I experience first.

I read the books before watching, and was still really happy with the series and am looking forward to season 2.
But I am REALLY looking forward to book six, which I think comes out in December!

If there ever is or was going to be a mass effect movie or tv show, I want the guys that created this show to be the ones at it's helm.

While I enjoy it I only find it entertaining, but not much more than that. It's not very intricate, but I find that the case of most of the author(s) works. His plot is weak and he doesn't have a head for good mystery (albeit he tries). Now what he excels at is characterization. His characters are complex human beings that are clearly made to aim for those shades of greys. There are no heroes or villains. I haven't read these books as in general I read my fantasy and watch my sci-fi, so I turned my brain on for it but was a bit disappointed in the result. Not that it's "predictable" necessarily, but there aren't a lot of mind bending turn arounds I was hoping for. Still great characters and an entertaining way of telling it. Waaaaaaaaay above the drivel I am used to seeing from Syfy. Of the works I've read from Abraham (I never truly get why someone has to use a pseudonym) I'd love to see the Long Price Quartet made to film. Seedless in particular could be one of the best characters in television if scripted as well as his complexity allows. I enjoyed The Dagger and Coin, Dawson Kalliam was the first "hero" noble that actually felt like a nobleman. A pretentious prick who just happened to be on the side of the angels. Like I said, I love Abraham's characterization. It's his selling point. *** On an aside, my favourite author that's honestly reached a near prolific god-like status in my eyes is Brandon Sanderson. His Cosmere/Mistborn/Stormlight rights were optioned. I don't fall in for his YA stuff, but the Stormlight Archive are the best fantasy novels I've read since R Scott Bakker's "Prince of Nothing" series. The amount of foreshadow in them is disgusting. I'm on my fifth or sixth reread right now and still picking up bits I didn't notice.

This show ain't bad but heavily overrated. Admiral Raan overplaying as fuck and the cop's partner (the one that got stabbed by rebels) has NO meaning in the plot (at least in the 1st season).

I haven't read the books, but I liked the first season of the TV series. Can't wait for season 2!
It does have a Mass Effect vibe. It seems like the universe could almost fit within the story of Mass Effect, before humanity found the Mars archive & the Charon relay.

The show's production value is great, but I find myself hard pressed to really care about any of the characters. That's a huge letdown.

This show ain't bad but heavily overrated. Admiral Raan overplaying as fuck and the cop's partner (the one that got stabbed by rebels) has NO meaning in the plot (at least in the 1st season). I think part of the problem some people might have was that the Expanse ended right at the point where things were actually starting to happen and the plot was finally coming together... although you could easily label that criticism towards S1 of Game of Thrones as well. But yeah, some of the characters are very thinly drawn. It took me several episodes before I found the Cant crew even remotely likeable, even Holden, who's meant to be the main character. I was far more invested in Miller, who's clearly meant to be a likeable jerkass right from the off. How he went about the investigation was more interesting, although his bizarre obsession with the missing girl wasn't really made entirely clear? Still enjoyed the show overall... and hopefully some of the problems with S1 will be addressed/fixed in S2.

I’m looking forward to season 2 of The Expanse. I was unable to watch season 1 as it aired so I watched it over the summer and kind of became mildly obsessed with it, even if there were a few cheesy parts like Holden’s zero gravity sex scene. I’m sorry, nothing about that was sexy. I think it may have been the first sex scene in a movie or tv series that I was embarrassed to watch. I’m looking forward to season 2 and the Mars Congressional Republic having more of a role in this season. I have only read the first book but I believe that parts of the second are added into season one. I'm hoping to have the second book finished before before season 2 starts up. So, not exactly related to the show and I hope it's ok if I post these pictures here, but I was at New York City Comic-Con this past October and the crew of the Rocinante and the authors had a panel that I sat in on. It was honestly really great to see the cast members seem genuinely excited about their characters and the show. Dominique Tipper, who plays Naomi, was really excited for the audience to see a clip of a scene from season 2. She reminded me of a kid opening a present on Christmas morning. When the host was introducing the clip to the audience, her face lit up and she turned to the audience and started clapping and jumping up and down in her chair; it was just really sweet to see someone that excited about their work. (This was taken as she was calming down and preparing to watch the scene. ) Also, Cas Anvar, who plays Alex, asked the audience to yell “Donkey Balls” at him so he could record it. He’s probably one of the few people who is happy to have that phrase yelled at him.

Agreed about that scene with Holden; Aside from the novelty factor, free-floating Zero-G Sex would be rather unpleasant according to scientists.
The lack of gravity or anything to grasp onto, drastically limits either partner's movement or ability to position themselves properly. The increased exertion from simply moving would cause both parties to tire quickly, thus reducing how long it would last. The effects of weightlessness coupled with the above factors, means either person would have a difficult time getting off.
And even if you did, results might prove a tad... messy. Not sure why space-fiction continues to think it's better, when the logistics alone show it really wouldn't be?

I'll watch it to see how Bobbie Draper is portrayed, but I have to say, I didn't like last season nearly as much as I enjoyed Reading Leviathan Wakes. I should read more. I haven't read much since the days I used to binge on old TSR Forgotten Realms novels. Wish I still had a local book store. E-reading and audible just isn't the same. I got mine from my local library. Maybe I should separate the two more, but the characters on the tv show just aren't as likable. In the books, the crew of the Rocinante is much tighter knit. They work together, depend on each other, and are virtually inseparable. Not this bunch of angsty dysfunctionals on the show (I couldn't believe it when Amos actually threatened Holden to his face last season) Speaking of... the crew is supposed to be much older. Alex is supposed to be in his fifties and a 20 year vet of the Martian navy. Holden is described as youthful-looking, but starting to go grey. And so on. These characters already had their careers, gathered a large number of skeletons for their closets, and were basically drifting their way through the rest of their lives when the incident with the Canterbury happened.
