Given I'm thinking of making my first Rook a Grey Warden Mage I could see my character hooking up with Davrin

I was planning to romance Harding first (having been one of the leading advocates of DWARF ROMANCE this whole time) but he's so hot he might waylay me . I romanced Alistair first in DAO and Blackwall first in DAI, and THIS Grey Warden sword-and-board guy also has a baby griffon. I am not made of stone.
Also I'm glad someone drew this already: a meme

My first thought was also a Harding romance . . . but the more I think about it . . . she's super cute but not exactly exciting? I really want to play a Mage and Lucanis looks like an interesting option and he's certainly got more mystery around his history than Harding. Harding might have to be a later playthrough romance.

I very rarely say this, and I'm even somewhat loathe to bring it up knowing the demo and sensibilities of this forum, but as a black man, I'm all for Davrin! I love the fact that he's dark skinned and has strong black facial features, I love the texture of his hair, and I love that he's voiced by a fellow West African - I'm here for it all and I'm saying it right now, Davrin can do no absolutely wrong in my eyes! A bit bored that he's yet another Grey Warden, but it's basically par for the course in the DA series at this point.
That said, the word "charming" is doing a lot of work in his description for me. Alistair was "charming." Varric is "charming." Dorian was "charming." Purple Hawke was "charming." You see what I'm getting at? Back in 2009 - 2014, these guys and their sarcastic, quippy lines were cute for the time - I guess, not really for me, but for y'all. In 2024, after the Marvel boom and the saturation of irreverent, Whedon-esque dialogue in most media, I'm dead tired of this style of humor and these type of characters. It's so passé, and I hope that we get more earnestness and geniality from Davrin than flippancy and cheekiness.

It's so passé, and I hope that we get more earnestness and geniality from Davrin than flippancy and cheekiness. To be honest that's what I usually think of as charming. Not too serious and dour but not constantly quipping jokes either. More pleasant and, as you say, genial, plus respectful and persuasive in a unobtrusive and natural way. Varric always struck me as a wheeler dealer type who could sell you a three legged donkey and you'd think you'd got a good deal but having the gift of the gab is not really charming in my book. As for Alistair and Dorian, they had a superficial charm but with Dorian it seemed very affected and I say that as someone who really liked him but sometimes his relentless snark did start to grate a little. So, like you, I hope Davrin isn't just going to be another "Alistair" or "Dorian" with a griffon. (Since they were both written by David Gaider and he left the team before Trespasser, I'm hopeful on that front.)

Of all the characters I listed, Alistair was the only one I actually did find charming and pleasant to interact with. Just tone down the snark - a lot - and I'll most likely be pleased with Davrin's personality.

I'm looking forward to hearing his backstory. What part of Thedas is he from? When did he join the Wardens and why? Was it more the standard, darkspawn killed my clan or at least some members of it, or is it more he wants to make a difference in Thedas as a whole? Historically the Dalish have joined the Wardens and even seem to have a connection of sorts because of the Dalish knowing the herbal remedy that can slow the taint (at least so far as the Core Rule Book is concerned), which I assume is what Marethari used to slow the onset of symptoms in Mahariel until they could take the Joining. Even so, I imagine it isn't so common between Blights and the 5th Blight is now 20 years or more ago, so it is unlikely he joined up before then or even during it, since the rest of Thedas was unaffected and none of the Dalish joined up in Ferelden, so far as I am aware. That's what is intriguing about Davrin; he doesn't appear in any of the stories in Tevinter Nights, or the comics, or the short stores, so he is a completely new character.
However, I do know about the origins of Assan from the Last Flight. Perhaps Davrin was originally invited to join the Wardens to help raise the griffons and then decided to stay on.

Its cool to have a black and elven companion but i want to be honest from all of 7 characters i find Davrin the least exciting.
At the end he is another Grey Warden. He should bring something new to the table which Bioware hasn´t explore with other Grey Warden companions. I kinda what hoped that Davrin would quite the opposite of what Thom Rainier sees what the Grey Wardens are. A Warrior who is only interesting in dealing with the Blight and has even extreme views on things. A more extreme version of Duncan if you like.

At the end he is another Grey Warden. He should bring something new to the table which Bioware hasn´t explore with other Grey Warden companions. Leaving aside DAA, they have been human and pretty much followed the standard narrative of either being the younger/bastard child of a noble, recruited specifically by the officer in charge because if some ability they recognised in them or a criminal who joined to escape a death sentence. Duncan was a murderer before he became a Warden as was Thom Rainer when Blackwall recruited him. What makes Davrin different is that he is a Dalish elf. Now they do join up periodically but his motivations may be different from the other Wardens we have encountered. Even the elf in Last Flight was a city elf who seemed to have joined up to escape the poverty and prejudice. So, that is what could make Davrin interesting as I'm fairly certain he must have joined up after the 5th Blight, even possibly after the episode with Corypheus. If he is a Dalish elf actually from the Anderfels that could be really interesting as he can give some insight into what life is like out there, although I have to admit I think a Dalish clan would be mad to willingly stay in the area. Could he possibly be from those strange elves in the Tirashan? They were said to have blood red vallaslin but it might be difficult to see that if his vallaslin had faded since he acquired them.

What makes Davrin different is that he is a Dalish elf. This give him an interessting background story but it doesn´t make an interessting character. Blackwall later Thom Rainier also has on interessting background but i don´t think that change my opinion that he is still a bland character as a fake Warden.
Davrin should act more with nuance and not what i fear another heroic grey warden companion.

It randomly occurred to me that it was Grey Wardens who discovered the creepy brine pools. I wonder if we already know about them at the start of the game or if Davrin or Grey Warden Rook will bring it up. Not necessarily because it's ahem, particularly relevant to Veilguards story, just if they are going to tie that into the lore in game. If we are correct and the other monstrosity appearing behind Solas is indeed Ghilan'nain, I feel if the brine pools weren't somehow accommodated in the story, it would be a shame and a waste of a particularly creepy dark fantasy element.

Isn't there a possibility that we have to deal with an archdemon and Davrin may have the option to sacrifice himself?

Davrin is said to be a 'monster hunter', so I wonder if he's been out there killing the horrible stuff that's crawling out of those pools personally. Not that there aren't plenty of other monsters, but it would make sense if the Wardens had decided that they need to deal with the other eleven, if only because they're underground and darkspawn walking into them is clearly bad news. (My bet is that at least one of them will end up being Rook's problem ...)

You've jest described the main idea for my Grey Warden PT, a DA version of Paragade Shepard Yeah, I hope Davrin will be more nuanced than the run-of-the-mill hero type, but I'm not holding my breath, tbh.
