userCan we expect an accent? 🥺 (Such as Zevran or Josephine) *so nervous about this* Mary Kirby @biomarykirby· Yes. Fudge yeah. Regarding the accent of Antivans though... Zevran's VA couldn't do an italian accent so he did a spanish one instead, while Josephine's VA Allegra Clark confirmed hers was an italian one.

He also didnt strike me as a socially awkward person at all. He may only be comfortable with people he knows, like Illario, or when he is working because that's his job. I think he may find it difficult to relax when off duty (he certainly seemed on the alert the entire time in Wigmaker) but that may go with the territory of being a renowned assassin. He knows his enemies want to take him down. Also, he is probably awkward with strangers because of trust issues. He dare not let his guard down and has been conditioned not to by his grandmother. So, he is probably going to be really hard work. In other words the complete opposite of Zevran.

I do find his description in The Veilguard interesting, so he's a bisexual dumpster fire and socially awkward, whereas he didn't seem that way in The Wigmaker Job. At least from what we got in that story, I would describe him as serious, having a heart deep down (letting the slaves go and making the assassination harder for himself because he wants the evil blood mage to suffer before he dies) and having a sense of humour since he loves to mock his cousin. He also didnt strike me as a socially awkward person at all. But then again it's probably been a few years since The Wigmaker Job and something terrible could have happened to him to change his personality. As a ardently-into-males dumpster fire and socially awkward entity myself, I feel this is Mary describing Lucanis as a private person, while it doesn't have to affect his professional persona. Also, Mary wrote the 'The Wake' and Lucanis for the game, while 'The Wigmaker Job' was written by Courtney Woods so there's that.

But then again it's probably been a few years since The Wigmaker Job and something terrible could have happened to him to change his personality. Maybe even before. Wasn't there something about Lucanis acting "not like himself" or whatever (I need a re-read! lol)? Didn't he destroy an elven artefact keeping spirits at bay, causing people to be possessed? So - and especially if he's always been Fade-sensitive - what if something happened to him also? Is it a Wynne-adjacent situation... or Anders? Some variation of it? Did he catch a case of The Dark Passenger? Or is it only his (fine!) body we're seeing, but someone something else is driving? The possibilities are numerous, but I believe something's definitely up. I just hope that if he does have a spirit tagalong, it won't change his personality much. Part of why I'm excited for Lucanis is because he already is an established character and I know what to expect based on his story. His personality doing a 180 would be quite something. Anyway, so far his descriptions by Bioware and Mary Kirby pin him as one of the most popular male romance options in the game (like BG3 Astarion, if you will). Bioware knows what they're doing

Did he catch a case of The Dark Passenger? Or is it only his (fine!) body we're seeing, but someone something else is driving? The possibilities are numerous, but I believe something's definitely up. I'm hoping that they might have gone with my idea of a Dark Seeker. I've always argued that I couldn't see why a faith spirit (or any other for that matter) wouldn't form a bond with someone who had a similar outlook to their own, not just someone who believed in the Maker. Lucanis is a Master Assassin who has been totally conditioned into his role by his grandmother so it has almost become his 'faith': "Death is my Calling". Thus he is not a mage but a non-mage with a spirit protector (this used to be called a Spirit Warrior). Seekers cannot be possessed (by any other spirit/demon) or controlled with blood magic mind control (very useful if your primary quarry are fanatical blood mages). So, he has the attributes of a Seeker but with a darker edge to his "faith". That would be really helpful, particularly considering we are going up against powerful ancient mages. However, we know from Anders that the mage partner can get a bit touchy if you are proving too much of a distraction. Anders used to like to having a laugh, drink and generally enjoying himself. Then Justice came on board and it all changed. Justice did not approve of his relationship with Hawke but Anders ignored him.

I just hope that if he does have a spirit tagalong, it won't change his personality much Much might depend on when it became a tag along and what his personality was like before. I've maintained that from the description that Cassandra gives of the Seeker rite of initiation that they are really "possessed" or have some sort of mental link with their faith spirit. That is what gives them their powers. However, because it is a faith spirit and attracted to their particular brand of faith, it is more in sync with their personality when it came on board. So, it doesn't really alter their personality. The same could be true of Lucanis if the spirit was attracted to him for his devotion to his profession of assassin. It won't have altered his character. I think the person more likely to have influenced that would be his tyranical grandmother. He suffered a lot of physical abuse as a child and Wigmaker says that he hated her for it, even though he acknowledged it was done to ensure he survived in his world. I think that is likely to have established way more issues in him than any later spirit that may have joined with him.

We have only seen him casually interact with Illario, any other interactions were as part of the job. Given his upbringing, I can't imagine him having any close relationships with people otehr than Illario. So he may be bit awkward when it comes to more intimate (I include platonic into that) relationships and emotions.

I could not imagine a less appealing description to a character than a '' human dumpster fire '' or '' disaster (bisexual) '' but I know this is just cheesy fandom talk, but regardless, I'm cringing a bit. I am truly not into social awkwardness in video game romances, as it tends to read like the corniest romcom shenanigans. But I'm all ears for potential demonic possessions

I think that is likely to have established way more issues in him than any later spirit that may have joined with him. Excellent points. His past and the abuse he's suffered, no doubt inform the man that he is today. Victims of abuse can often experience dissociation, go to a different place in their minds, kids might make up an imaginary friend... etc. In the world of DA, what does that mean for a person with an apparent connection to the Fade? Mages are taught from an early age to block out demons and spirits, Lucanis, however, might not have had that. Could that have been the start of whatever's going on with him..? Anyways. Just looking at possibilities at this point, but there's definitely more to him than meets the eye. He's not just "the Assassin guy", the Ezio Auditore of the team, the heir to the Antivan Crows that wants nothing to do with it. Lucanis is a much more complex character, and with a touch of the supernatural (to what extent, I don't know).

On a slightly different note: the Devs mentioned that Rook has "reasons to avoid blood magic." Do we think that could be (in part) because of Lucanis?

No, I think it may have more to do with Solas and travels through Fade. I'm not entirely sure what all the implications of magic shenanigans may mean - but then again, whether we stop Solas or not, we are heading into the world that is very likely increasingly magically unstable, so every minor issue could be a kindling for an esoteric personal crisis, really. Also, based on what happened in TN Lucanis angered a powerful faction of Tevinter supremacists, who also happen to be blood-mages, and his story in TN ends with a pretty overt threat from a Vint magister. I have a feeling we're going to meet Zara Renata in game.

Mary Kirby @biomarykirbyLoo-khan-ess Day-ah-MORT-ey Nice to have confirmation the name is pronounced in more of a Spanish way than Italian. Considering he is from a powerful family, it could be that his grandmother sought a mage to help Lucanis repress his innate magical ability and resist demonic possession so that he wouldn't have to go into a circle. That's an interesting perspective. I've mostly wondered if it's not innate magic perhaps it could be induced. He was trained to deal with mages so I was wondering if his grandmother had access to some Seeker secrets or paid off a Seeker to do the reverse tranquility that Cassandra talks about in DAI and that triggered a sensitivity to magic in him. Templars need to drink lyrium to fight mages but I think it's a known idea that Seekers don't, perhaps Grandmama Dellamorte was able to track down someone who was willing, under the right circumstances, to perform the ritual. To be fair, he and Illario are more like brothers, so it makes sense he would be comfortable around someone he grew up with. Then the contacts he had around the city that allowed the two of them to infiltrate the party were business associates, they didn't really exchange pleasantries. Social awkwardness is more visible in quiet moments of trying to connect with people on a personal level, having small talk and trying to find common ground in regards to normal day to day things. I expect him to cough and hum and be awkward when at the Lighthouse but when in the field, it's job mode engaged.

Indeed. Most socially awkward people can put on a fasçade long enough to get through de rigeur and formal interactions. It's the more personal interactions that they stumble through. Or the ones that come up unexpectedly.

I expect him to cough and hum and be awkward when at the Lighthouse but when in the field, it's job mode engaged. There are more clues in the Wigmaker job assuming his character is still consistent with that. Illario went out of his way to get a fresh outfit in anticipation of mingling at the party, even though Lucanis thinks he looks like a tourist rather than a native. However, when Illario comments that Lucanis looks like he's dressed for a funeral, he responds: "It's a job, not a party." Even though as Illario points out the setting for the job is a party. Then on their way across the city, Illario tries to make small talk about their mark, which Lucanis cuts off with a blunt two word answer because it says he likes to spend the time before getting to a target silent and focused. Illario tries to press him for more and he replied "I gave you a dossier." No matter how much Illario tries to pressure him for more Lucanis won't be drawn. He is very intense, focused and not inclined to idle talk, even with his cousin when he deems it not appropriate. I don't think we've encountered anyone quite like him before. I suppose the nearest might have been Sten. However, Lucanis does have a sense of humour, even if he only lets it show rarely. That's why I find him fascinating. After reading the Wigmaker Job you think you know him but you really don't. Then Mary Kirby took over writing him, so I expect someone really interesting.

I just remembered something else from Eight Little Talons: Viago referred to him as Caterina's demon of a grandson too. He said that Catarina would likely recall him from Tevinter to kill off all members of the traitor talon's House and both he and Teia shivered at the thought. That is quite some reputation if it even fills two high ranking Talons with fear. Considering he was Catarina's favourite it makes you wonder if that was her aim, to create the perfect killer, when she beat and starved him into absorbing his lessons completely.

The way I'm imagining Lucanis right now is that his outer persona is taciturn, laconic, and grim, but when you penetrate his defensive mechanisms, he's actually a bit of a blushing stumblebum; shy and awkward.

atm I sorta picture him going "Hey, do you want me to kill this person for you" instead of giving you flowers. Like, there's a chip missing... Bouncing off some the comments above, yeah, I know plenty of people that are confident, assertive, extremely good at what they do, the final bosses in the game of life... but when it comes to matters of the heart (friendships, romantic relationships...) = a disaster.

I wonder whether the demon symbolism is foreshadowing something - Lucanis is called The Demon by the Venatori, Viago and Teia call him a "demon of a grandson" and his pride demon looking tarot card fuels my suspicions further.
He also has an elven associate who guards a fast travel device underneath the alienage as well as a mysterious patron who paid for the assassination to be carried out (is it the same person or organisation?) and although Lucanis tells Illario there is nothing more to it, it's quite obvious he's hiding something.
Will he be the Wynne/Anders/Cole of this game? That could explain his eyeball itch when someone is tapping into the fade, which didn't make any sense to me on its own. Although I'm a bit tired of the same tropes being reused but maybe there is so much writers can do when we have so many new companions each game.

Well, however he is, he does seem to have been devastated by Lucanis' death... or "death"? Seems their relationship was quite brotherly. I still maintain that was a big act. If he was trying to impress his grandmother, I'd have thought he'd have done better to hold it together but if he actually had something to do with Lucanis' death (because it wasn't faked but intentional by him) then he was probably trying to cover himself. For all their apparent friendship there was definitely tension between them in Wigmaker Job over the matter of the successor to Caterina as First Talon. Also Lucanis was aware there was something rotten under the surface of the superficially charming Illario. It was clear he was jealous and resentful of the fact that his grandmother favoured Lucanis and whilst his cousin said he didn't want the role, the fact was he stood in his way so long as Caterina was making the decision. Lucanis admitted you don't say no to Caterina. It was interesting that it says that Lucanis was always totally honest with Illario, which was rare among the Crows, but that Illario didn't appreciate it because he didn't want to hear the truth but what fed his desires. So, best case scenario is that Illario helped Lucanis fake his death to smooth his passage to the top and free his cousin from his obligations. Alternatively, Illario did the dirty on him and Lucanis will be seeking revenge. Let's face it, last time we saw them in Wigmaker Job they were about to embark on a ship headed back to Antiva. So unless it was attacked by the Qunari navy or there was an enemy assassin already on board, how did Lucanis die? Either way, I wonder if the next step for Illario would have been to kill his grandmother.

I think that Illario knows and maybe even helped Lucanis faked his death based on this line alone from The Wake: "He’d repeated this speech like an actor rehearsing for a particularly infuriating play for hours".

So another possibility for Lucanis's magical(?) powers: User Irabelas on tumblr (full credit to her) posted these screenshots in which Zevran says the Crows often make blood sacrifices to gain "uncanny abilities".
