I think I could be satisfied having her use Explosive Trap, Explosive Daggers (this will be her ranged attack because I'm ignoring the bow), Toxic Dash until specialization gives her Fortune's Turret, and the base Concussive Barrage ultimate. Looking over the skill trees map from TheAngzt's Ability, Item, & Progression Breakdown, I realize I will need to change the build slightly. If I want to open up Rook's specialization at level 20, I will need to drop Explosive Daggers. I will have Rook use Toxic Dash permanently, and temporarily use Pilfer instead. Since Rook's bow will only be a stat stick in my case, I will need to use a ranged companion's abilities to whittle down those barriers. There are ways to get more skills points via exploration (at least in the Crossroads).

There are ways to get more skills points via exploration (at least in the Crossroads). I don't mind really. I was initially picking based on appearance and description, without accounting for location on the grid. I will beeline for the specialization nodes, plus a small detour for "poison" and Toxic Dash, and, if Rook picks up an extra point or two in the earlier game, there may just be some other passives or traits in close proximity to my path that I may find desirable.

So just to clarify whatever faction you choose at the start of the game is going to determine the specialization of your class?

No. Specializations are only determined by class. The faction thing is purely flavor and more of a ‘this is the origin’ of the specializations.
Like a Crow may have invented the idea of a Spellblade at some point, and now it's spread to non Crow mages.

Name: Clara de Riva Faction: Antivan Crow Race: Human Gender: Female Class: Rogue Specialization: Duelist
Backstory: Clara was a slave owned by the notorious criminal gang known as the Spades and run by a foul-tempered brute known as Jowal "the Wall" because of his enormous girth. Within the outfit he was infamous for caring around a riding crop for "disciplinary purposes." The gang specialized in burglaries and shakedowns in Minrathous. Clara was trained in the art of pickpocketing and lockpicking from an early age...and her light frame and nibble feet made her ideal for high rise work. Identified by the Crows at the age of 13 she was subsequently purchased. They made an offer not even Jowal was dumb enough to refuse. The Crows refined her skills and trained her in the ways of the duelist in order defend herself and potentially for elimination work...something she is grateful that hadn't been required of her. The training was harsh...as were the punishments for failure. But the rewards for success were as equally as sweet...and a far sight better than anything she'd have received with the Spades. While technically no longer a slave Clara knows leaving the Crows will never be an option that doesn't end up with her being hunted down and likely murdered...resulting in feelings of ambivalence toward the organization. The harshness of her upbringing has given her a direct and aggressive personality. She has little faith in the "goodness" of people and even less in the world to be humorous.

I thimn ki twa smentoined in eithe rthe gam einformer bits o rQ&A's I don' texactl yremember where. I htink the only thing that' sleve llocked are specialization swhich unlock once you hit level 20.

I'm gonna go Vanilla (maybe) and I'm ashamed of myself. I'm thinking of male human rogue grey warden.Conscripted because criminal (if possible) not the biggest fan of his order. Spend too much time in the Deep Roads killing darkspawn. Not fond of magic, elves, spirit. Like dwarves, the sun, food (that isn't nug or mushrooms) Think Griffon are stupid (not useful in deep roads) Gotta pick blow stuff up in the rogue tree (although I don't like the saboteur main spells). Really happy to beat the shit of anything blighted or responsible for the Blight. Saw too much horrors in the Deep Roads.

I noticed that a major undercurrent of all the Rooks is their disobedience of seniority, authority and leadership and a willingness to defy expectations/orders/norms for the 'greater good'.

I am a little tempted to delete some of my posts to cover expired inaccuracies, but I suppose I could just start paying rent in this thread for my stream of consciousness.
I have decided to go with my charming and sarcastic, male, Grey Warden, Qunari mage in the end. I really was in denial about twisting my arm for the melee rogue and her bow stat-stick. The forced nature of the bow really has been bugging me after all. Since I made Hawke a dagger and bow user, I would prefer to have future Dragon Age protagonists specializing in either melee or ranged weapon styles, potentially one of each for the next two games. For my customs, I also noticed that I had accidentally made Hawke my only male protagonist amongst Dragon Age and Mass Effect until potentially DA5 and ME5 or 6. Not really an issue, but perhaps a little unfairly balanced.
That being said, I looked over the trees more, and, even though I am not super excited about damage-oriented mages, I have created a synergistic build that I am actually excited to play. He will use the Corrupted Ground, Frost Nova, and Tempests spells, combined with the Crypt's Herald ultimate when he becomes a Death Caller. He will exclusively wield a Necrotic staff, and hope his background will offset his weakness versus Darkspawn.
As mentioned numerous times before, I will run my alternate first. She will be a confrontational and direct, Shadow Dragon, Dwarf warrior. She will become a Champion who wields a two-handed weapon, utilizing the Driving Kick, Titan Stomp, and Blight Bane skills, combined with the Flashing Fists base ultimate. My Qunari mage will likely romance Taash, but possibly Harding instead. My dwarf warrior will romance Harding, but possibly Bellara or Neve depending on how I like Taash as a character.

I finally have some backstory for my first Rook.
Gender - Male Faction - Grey Wardens
Lineage - Elf Name - Enasalas Thorne Class - Mage: Evoker
Born in to a dalish clan he was kidnapped by Tevinters in a raid and most of the clan was killed. He was strong in magic even in young age, so he was sold to magister. He studied under his master and became even more powerful. One night his master and little entourage went to artifact hunting and Antaam attacked them. Only one to survive this attack was Enasalas with a little help from a Warden that happened to pass by. Enasalas had lost his familiar life two times already, so when offered, he decided to go through the joining.

I am quite liking this default female Elf Rook. I might skip the CC and play as her on my first playthrough. Also probably going as a mage/spellblade.

4. Lord of Fortune, maybe rogue, world state dead poor dwarf warden and romance Isabella So now after see the classes more some things have changed a bit. 1. I will play 2 runs at the same time. Zorro crow rogue(DAI romance: Josephine) female Shadow dragon mage evoker(DAI romance: Dorian) 2. warden(DAI romance: Cullen) 3. Lord of Fortune 4. Legolas rogue Veil ranger

And then thinking there will be a sixth. Obviously at this point really scraping the bottom of the barrel of character concepts but I've never played a Qunari before and well pretty much all that is left is a Female Qunari Evoker Lord of Fortune. Tentatively named Athena. If I get this far. From there though the other topic that I have been musing about, partially owing to this, is varying up my builds especially between my two potential Veil Rangers. For me and my observations in media there is pretty much two different types of Archers which tend to get presented. Brawlers and Snipers. For purposes of relating this to DA you also pretty much have debilitators vs just straight up DPS. So think Oliver is going to run and be the more debilitating one who isn't just going around sniping people given his base also tended to get up in people's faces as well as being quite distant and a good shot with his bow. So thinking of going for things like exploding damage and necrosis damaga in order to help debilitate the enemy's around him and what not. Going to have to see how this works in regards to the Darkspawn. My Veil Ranger rogue will be more of the sniper.

Subject to change and expansion but now I'm looking at
Name: Atia Mercar Lineage: Elf Gender: Female Voice: English Faction: Shadow Dragons Appearance: long brown Curly Hair Class: Mage Specialisation: Death caller or Evoker, but slotting atleast one spirit and entropic ability either way.
Background: Found in the slave market/pens by the Mercars alone at a young age Atia's parents were assumed to have either died or been purchased without her. The military family purchased her out of pity, they could afford only a few slaves and she was not worth the cost of feeding her for some years, when she grew larger she worked in the scullery. At 9 years old she saved some china from destruction by magically slowing it's fall. It was then that the Mercars freed and adopted her, thereby elevating the family to Laetan status in Tevinter society. She learned to control her magic at the circle but did not forget what it was to be a slave and would try to help those still enslaved when she could. This lead to her being recruited by the Shadow Dragons. Inspiration quotes: "Shal'kek nem'ron" - Teal'c (I die free) "It's about the mission, bro. He's got it. You don't." - Charles Gunn
Traits - Practical - Kind - Discreet - Judgmental
Beliefs - The means justify the ends. - Everyone should be free. - Spirits are not evil, just dangerous. - You can tell the quality of a nation's leadership by the quality of life of its poorest members.
Quirks - Despises the smell of coffee. - Has a knitting project on her at all times. Keeps her hands occupied during long meetings and long waits. - Hands are always cold.

I feel like I'm getting closer to deciding on my first Rook.
Gender: Male Lineage: Dwarf Faction: Antivan Crow Class: Rogue or Warrior Voice: Masculine 1 (British)
Normally I would go for the American voice for a dwarf but I didn't think that voice really fit my character's personality. I love the British male voice though - thought both the medium and low pitches sounded good from what I heard.

Lately, I've been recreating my favorite Warhammer characters in RPGs with CCs. Vlad Von Carstein in Elden Ring, Malus Darkblade in Dragon's Dogma 2 and I'm leaning towards Ungrim Ironfist for a Dwarf 2H Slayer. Depending on how "bad" we can be, I'd like to make Morathi for a second playthrough as a Mage or my own custom character for a rogue.

Right, I've mostly settled on my first Rook. Gemma Laidir, a female elf, was born and raised in a small, secluded town on the coast of Rivain. She displayed magical talent, apprenticed to the village Seer, but her heart always longed for the sea. When a merchant ship made emergency port there, after a storm rolled through, Gemma seized the opportunity to stow away and convinced the captain to take her on as a cabin boy. Many long, thankless years passed after that, with Gemma struggling to rise through the ranks due to her elvish lineage. Eventually, however, she was made botswain, efficient and practical in her organization of the crew. But more time passed, and she became homesick for Rivain, for most of her time was spent in Antiva and trade routes along the Free Marches; she also began to feel stifled by the unspoken hierarchies of the ship, as though she had reached her ceiling through no choice of her own. It came to a head when a crewmate sold her out to templars in Antiva City, and Gemma was forced to flee for her life. Having heard rumors of a treasure hunters coalition back in Rivain, Gemma sought them out and joined the Lords of Fortune. Her expertise and magic both lent her swift success on expeditions, perhaps too swift--for after an incident with a corrupt noble, she was forced to lay low and let tempers blow over. Gemma is mostly stoic and no nonsense, with a dry sense of humor. She loves Antivan puppet shows and will take time out of her day to attend them whenever possible. She also has a minor vain streak and permits herself the occasional pretty bauble or nice outfit where possible, although she would deny such accusations vigorously. Gemma believes safety and preparation are the keys to surviving the callous indifference of nature, as well as the chaotic unknowns of other people, and is extremely loyal to those she considers "part of the crew."
Edit: Finally got BG3 working properly and designed a prototype Gemma in it.

I still have no idea what to do for a first playthrough. Maybe I’ll make a Dwarven Grey Warden and try to relive the glory days. SO glad you can save characters, ‘cause I think I’ll have to spend a significant amount of time just making different Rooks and deciding on which one to play first later. This’ll probably also help mitigate the keep situation and get me re-hyped about playing.
I’ll probably do what I did with BG3 and make different class/faction/race combos to force myself out of my comfort zone. I hope we save them before deciding on class/faction. I want to make a bunch of characters before I commit any of them to a specific background.

The nice thing about early access for Baldur's Gate 3 is that I had plenty of time to obsessively flowchart my character for act 1 and have everything figured out before release.

I feel that. The nice thing about early access for Baldur's Gate 3 is that I had plenty of time to obsessively flowchart my character for act 1 and have everything figured out before release. I have a spreadsheet of my world states with select key choices and a general ‘theme’ for each. Only good thing about the keep choices of DAtV, is that I feel less stress about making characters that fit into specific world states. I’ll just get to play the characters how I feel at the time and figure out the rest once I have a broader picture of what the game offers in terms of replayability.

Gemma believes safety and preparation are the keys to surviving the callous indifference of nature, as well as the chaotic unknowns of other people, and is extremely loyal to those she considers "part of the crew." I likle th esound o ftha tbackground it's cretainl yan intrugin wa yt make a characte ra Lord o fFortune.
