Man Ryder Becomes N7 Over the Course of the Game

They said Ryder would not start out a hero or that experienced.  Unless they go way off script, that means not an N7.

I think we'll be making Ryder an N7 the old fashioned way, by earning it.

If we are explorers, why would we need to become N7?

For the same reason Shepard and others become N7s, when exploring the MWG.  I don't see a lot of difference in the exploration, but like the MWG, there will be dangerous critters ... some sapient, some not ... which we will have to deal with ... and unlike the MWG, we can't scurry back home if things get too rough, plus our numbers will be very small. 

We are going to have to deal with tough scrapes pretty much on our own ... so I would imagine every Andromeda version of Zhu's Hope, Freedom's Progress and Horizon is going to "sleep safe in [their] beds because rough [wo]men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

Now, if you think the Andromeda galaxy will be a place lacking threats, then no, Ryder would not need to upgrade the military skills from the start of the game.  I don't think that's the game BioWare is creating.  But that is just my opinion.  We will know for sure, in due time.
