I'm keen to become N7 over the course of the game: as long as the training is rigorous, hard and not taken lightly. Training ... *ksssssk*
will be challenging. *ksssssk*
Tired ... *ksssssk*
must take nap ... *ksssssk*
train later.

It should actually be fun if we could refuse N training. So we are allowed to train in N1-6 and if we want we can become N7, but not forced.

If we are explorers, why would we need to become N7? For the same reason Shepard and others become N7s, when exploring the MWG. I don't see a lot of difference in the exploration, but like the MWG, there will be dangerous critters ... some sapient, some not ... which we will have to deal with ... and unlike the MWG, we can't scurry back home if things get too rough, plus our numbers will be very small.
We are going to have to deal with tough scrapes pretty much on our own ... so I would imagine every Andromeda version of Zhu's Hope, Freedom's Progress and Horizon is going to "sleep safe in [their] beds because rough [wo]men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
Now, if you think the Andromeda galaxy will be a place lacking threats, then no, Ryder would not need to upgrade the military skills from the start of the game. I don't think that's the game BioWare is creating. But that is just my opinion. We will know for sure, in due time.
Shep was N7 before the game started, and even though we will be battling lots of factions, I still wouldn't want our character to become an N7. I'm sure Andromeda will not be lacking for threats, nor would I want Mass Effect to turn into #SpaceExplorersWithNoBattles because that would be boring for me. Having an N7 along still links us to the Alliance and all that, but seeing as our specialty is not combat, I would hope we aren't hand-waved into the position. Now if they want to make people N7 in multiplayer, go for it. That would make sense. I could see the ARK's laedership sending out N7s on missions to help protect the everyone on the ARKs or to get resources.

I have read that BioWare folks (I think it was Flynn ... but can't find the source) said that N7 would be part of the game progression for Ryder. It wouldn't be hand waved ... or a starting point (like it was with Shepard), but an integral part of the story.
Starting Ryder at an earlier point in a military career than Shepard is to allow us to work the progression ... becoming the hero ... so that if there is an ME:A2, Ryder would start out similar to Shepard in ME. That's about character, but in another interview, got into a bit about actual progression through the N1-N7 process. Maybe what I read wasn't credible ... but it shaped my point of view of what BioWare is doing with the Ryder story. We will have options on progression as Pathfinder and progression as N7 and our choices will effect the game.

If they do indeed go with becoming an N7, I hope it's agonizingly hard to do.

Yup. I was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but still serious when I said I wanted Ryder to earn the N7 the "old fashioned way."

Rydad is the new Saren and Ryder is the new Spectre... or something. Maybe dad is just Nihlus. Either way, it'll probably follow ME1 like a template like the rest of the leak that was confirmed to be true regarding the concept of the game and Khet and Remnants etc.
