I'll give in my two cents about this whole affair. Sorry if I'll come across as rude. Maybe I'm wrong, but some things just have to be said.
Some people find her ugly because she's "not as feminine as Liara." She doesn't look like the typical damsel in distress: sweet, virginal and devoted only to her love: Shepard.
Such people forget Liara was bisexual and not exclusively designed for the male audience. So she is as devoted to Female Shep as she is to Male Shep, something they're clueless about.
They wanted the female alien, the "first obvious LI choice" to suit their sexual fantasy of the perfect woman, the perfect romance. They were sorely disappointed, since that new asari is full of personality, curious, mischievous and playful, nothing like pure, virginal Liara and decided they hated what Bioware is doing with its female characters (Cassandra, Sera, etc). They associate that with a LGBT agenda when in fact, Bioware is just portraying normal women, instead of creating characters designed exclusively to satisfy male sexual needs.
To sum it up: a bunch of menchildren disliked the first female alien character that was introduced because they realised they weren't getting the virginal lady to romance and thus decided to resort to name-calling. She's ugly, she looks like Shrek, etc. That's right. Those people are mentally stuck in fifth grade or something.
Luckily, a large portion of the fanbase disagrees with them.

She's ugly, she looks like Shrek, etc. That's right. Those people are mentally stuck in fifth grade or something. Luckily, a large portion of the fanbase disagrees with them. I wouldn't say your being rude. Maybe hateful and/or bitter towards the male fandom as a whole. I didn't care for Cassandra at first because she came across as a religious zealot quite often in the game; and maybe it's a lack of interesting romance options for male inquisitors but she did grow on me. I really enjoyed romancing her though I wouldn't say she's my favorite Bioware romance or anything. Sera I just straight up disliked and I'll tell you why. She's annoying. Every scene she's in, when her dialogue is meant to be humorous, it isn't. It's mostly just grating and sometimes even painfully unfunny! So just no. Nothing to do with her sexual proclivities, her physical appearance, or her personality. It's just the writing and her dialogue are so off-putting that I avoid her like the plague. I originally romanced Ash in ME/ME2/ME3 and Tali became the forerunner as best romance in the series. Until they refused to show us her face, which left me feeling unfulfilled and disappointed. Looking back, I think it was indeed Liara who had the best romance arc from start to finish and not because she was the virginal, Princess/damsel in distress, devoted, blah blah w/e you said. Its because her character matures and evolves throughout the story, taking the romance along with it. The feelings between Liara and Shep continue to develop throughout all three games and she has BY FAR the most touching conclusion in the entire trilogy (IMO obv). Jack also deserves an honorable mention because her romance arc is well written, touching, and fun. It just doesn't have the same amount of content as Tali, Liara, Ash... Which is a shame. As to the new Asari. I've seen images of her where she looks hideous and others where she looks adorable, even beautiful. It's been very inconsistent so far on that front. I'm interested to learn more about who she is and how she behaves as that will be the most important factor as to whether I like her character. At this time I still know next to nothing about her and ME:A in general, tbh. Its staying under my radar for the most part as I'm STILL bitter over ME3's conclusion.

Well, both make me laugh, and I still think she is cute so I don't see your point. I thought this thread was long dead. It's nice to see everyone's opinions. I think we'll just have to wait and see what she will be like in the end. I personally couldn't care less about a video game's character looks, I just hope she has a great personality (I would love her to be kind of like Vette from SWTOR )

I think she looks nice though - her looks definitely expresses personality in this case. So, my guess would be she's going to be sassy, carefree and spontaneous.

Since I'm in the "ARKs left at the start of ME3" Camp, our Ninja Turtle Asari cannot be the child of Shep+Liara. Add the fact that everyone is sleeping for 600 +/- years and there is no way she can mature on arrival + be educated.. etc, etc.. etc.
If you write a story, best apply Occam's Razor to the plot arc. Best she is simply a young Asari that volunteered or was pre-selected for the journey.

I wouldn't say your being rude. Maybe hateful and/or bitter towards the male fandom as a whole. Ehhh, we kind'a deserve it though. Not for nothing, but I absolutely loathe how the video game industry (up until about the past 10 years ago or so) has treated women. One reason why I cannot stomach a game like MGS. Plus, it sucks, bonus for me. I don't always go looking for porn in video games, but when I do, it isn't hard to find. Time for some of these game development companies to start realizing this and start making games for a more mature audience, because we aren't 13-19 year's old anymore. And those 13-19 year old's? They can already see porn whenever they want. They don't need to save a princess in a castle. So, I think that we have a dual problem here. We have game developers that were raised with this kind'a stuff, and therefore if you put garbage in, you'll get garbage out. What these game developers are putting out will only fuel more people just like them. Garbage in, garbage out. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

I admit, I wasn't so sure about her appearance when she was first revealed, but I thought she looked kinda cute in the gameplay video. Also, I like the starry pattern on her crest-thingy.

I don't understand how the new asari could even be classified as ugly or jot having a feminine face in the tech demo. Her face isn't the same as in the E3 'reveal' either. I'm not saying people has to find her attractive (I'm in the middle), but the face that you don't find someone attractive doesn't mean that person/character has to be ugly.

It would not be the first time Bioware ignores some possibilities. If they ignore those, why not ignore the the green and blue endings. Make another ME game in the Milky Way with destroy. Why can they be ignored? I've done several low ems playthroughs. It adds replay value. Bioware. I've never chosen refuse. Never will. I always choose the red Why say that? As I said above. I've completed several low ems playthroughs. Does that mean I have no idea on how to play the game? And you do realize that the only difference between a low ems and high ems control playthrough is the time it takes to rebuild.

Liara is something like Morrigan. When she wants something she takes it. And how can Liara die? Only in the ending? It is to low to say it with guarantee. And she has not even say something to Shepard. Especially, when they have no relationship. Actually, I do not care about it, I am not a Liara fan boy, but the last scene is suspicious. Liara can die on the beam run if ems is below 2000. She will also die if ems is below 1750 and destroy is chosen since the door to the Normandy doesn't open suggesting everyone onboard is dead.

If ascoon is the child of smurfette and Shepard, I wouldn't buy the game. My Shepard never cared about the asari. She wanted to throw the asari in the volcano.
If the ascoon is the child, not, does that mean she's as stupid as her mother and grandmother? Remember both said Have you ever seen an asari commando unit before? Few humans have. Will she take armor from dead bodies and put it on display like her stupid mother did?
I don't see Bioware doing that.

Back in the old BSN, I mentioned the very possibility that our chars would look different because of the game engine switch.... DA:I is a perfect example of this. Same with the Asari. We have this mental picture of what they are supposed to look like.
What bugs me about this young Asari is the rationale for the artist(s) and writer(s) to put a mask on her. We may yet see a cut scene explaining this foible. Otherwise, it's a change for change's sake which can generate angst..
In any event, if she is a LI, I'd be somewhat surprised. And, if you are going to be naked between the sheets, the mask needs to come off.

It's not a mask, it's a tattoo/paint resembling a mask. I don't get what you're about the change being for change's sake. While it's not my favoruite type, asari has different type of tattos. What's the problem in making more diverse types? If she's a romance, I doubt the tattoo will come off. If it bothers you that much, don't romance her. It's not necessary to romance an asari to enjoy a Mass effect game. And again, I say this while not being a fan of that type of tattoo.

I understand That you don't like tattoos, but what difference in sense is between the previous and this one? I never said that the the diversity between each characters from the same species has to pass through a different tattoo. I don't think that's the reason why Bioware chose this tattoo, and neither I think it's lazy. It's simply something they added for a particular asari. It's no different then having a krogan with particular scars, crest or eyes compared to the others, only that this one is something you dislike. The fact that you dislike it doesn't mean the choice itself is bad, lazy or doesn't make sense.

I've been seeing this everywhere - complaints that our new asari is ugly. Please explain this to me, because I honestly don't see it. I think she is very cute. How is she ugly? She's ok. I just hate asari because the species concept is nonsense.

Umm, you just absorbed my thread naming her the Hamburglar Asari? So the poll I had set up is gone now?

She's ok. I just hate asari because the species concept is nonsense. Futanari are not nonsense. They are serious business. Asari aren't Futanari. And Ieldra was referring to them being an all-female race that can have (asari) children from everyone, I think.
