Frazier @tibermoon @bforbrownies They're actual hair, the odd result of a recessive human gene somewhere in her ancestry. She's the only asari in game /w them.

Eeeh, beats me. I like her, she looks spunky. After ME3, people complained Asari were all stereotypical spacebabes, now she's a bit different and people still complain. That's internet for you, I guess

When we first saw the Asari she was awful (because of the manly strong jaw), now that they obviously took the hate to heart (or was planning to fix it anyways) got rid of the strong jaw. Now I personally like the uniqueness of the characters design (except for a shown stomach in hazardous enviroments for immersion & environmental setting reasons). If you're talking about first look then she is shrek. This isn't that bad though.

Shown stomach is probably just her casual clothing, because she is not a squaddie yet...

Yeah, I don't mind the gear either.. I mean, I'm an ME2 fan, after all. But I don't like the cartoonishness, as you said. And it's not just her. And for the love of God, the quoting on this board sucks Sorry how that came out.

I'll give you a few insights into the discussions using ZipZap2000 and my back and forth on it. Note that this was on the old forums so I had to try and refit the format. ZipZap2000 was one of the people who elaborated. ZipZap2000 said: "Just goes to show how important it is that they get this right. The "Asari squad mate" is right up there with "Make sure the ending doesn't suck."Oh, I completely disagree. ZipZap2000 said: " It doesn't look like an Asari and its not just her face. Her crest is different when she turns her head."Her crest looks the same to me when I tried to see it and compare it to the crest of other asari. Can you elaborate on what you mean? ZipZap2000 said: "I'm genuinely questioning if it is an actual Asari. Or something we'll have to have explained to us more thoroughly."She has the crest of an asari and her skin is shades of the colors commonly exhibited by the asari. She looks like an asari to me. I believe we've even seen asari with her facial shape in the trilogy; The only thing I can see that would be odd, besides the eyebrows if they turn out to be real, would be the seeming lack of scale-like texture on her skin as asari's non-crest skin supposedly has that. I'm saying supposedly because I believe that the racial characteristic was either inconsistent throughout the trilogy or disappeared over time.

ZipZap2000 said: "Yeah... Colour schemes,"Her color scheme looks like a mixture between purple and blue: both of which are asari colors. While I'm saying a mixture, it could as easily be blue or pink, possibly lilac. ZipZap2000 said: "Colour schemes, an adjusted headcrest,"Her crest marking is similar to Samara's although hers is lighter in color, is less scaly and has the addition of stripes to it. Samara and Morinth show that creast markings can be very unusual from asari to asari. I see no difference between her headcrest and the headcrests of previous asari we've seen. If you can, would you mind elaborating? ZipZap2000 said: "clearly male features"Her "clearly male features" is either a facial shape called oval or or a facial shape called oblong. Her nose shape is called a button nose. Here is a woman that has the same features; reductress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Margaery.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/05/12/article-2626101-1DC4CAEA00000578-690_306x423.jpgYou may know her; she's called Natalie Dormer. ZipZap2000 said: "and face paint that makes no sense all come well before eyebrows." We don't know why she wears facial paint. ZipZap2000 said: "Then there's the lore clearly describing them as a race of beautiful women." We've seen asari that would not be considered conventionally beautiful and would be considered average sometimes even at best during the original trilogy. Tha lore bit was challenged even then. Would you mind linking me the codex entry or wherever that information is stated, please? I was unable to find it. ZipZap2000 said: "Its a man."It's a woman. We can have this song and dance until the game comes out and we'll be able to see for ourselves which of us is right about this. ZipZap2000 said: "I didn't even notice the eyebrows till the eyebrow thread came along."Yeah, the suspected eyebrows would count as a redesigned if it turns out they are actually real. The reason I'm reserving judgement is because we only have that one short footage of her and I've noticed that Liara has shots where it could be difficult to tell whether or not her eyebrows were real or fake. I wouldn't be altogether upset by this since eyebrows are believed to serve a purpose similar to eyelashes that the asari race would face. Asari have eyelashes which are used to protect the eye from debris and perform similar functions to whiskers: their sensitivity provides a warning that something is near the eye and so the eye closes reflexively. Eyebrows are hypothesized to have been developed to prevent sweat, water and such debris from falling into the eyesocket. It could make sense that the asari developed the same feature for the same purpose. For communication and facial expression purpose, less so. Seriously, does my country just have an unusually diverse population in terms of facial features? These facial features are not even that uncommon in my country. Is it elsewhere? Is that why I do not understand people's reactions?

There was also a whole lot of insistance in the threads that the asari was clearly a man (not always as a joke, some people actually thought this) and that Bioware was redesigning the entire asari race to fit the agenda.

Man, some people are taking the characters/races in the new engine really hard. And even suggesting she doesn't look like an asari, crazy. All of the asari features are there. She doesn't have a male jaw, the camera angle and her smug pose is probably making the illusion. Alien races WILL have different head/face structures and shapes, thank god, since that's how BioWare even imagined them first but because of time/engine constraints they didn't do it in Unreal 3, I believe I read this somewhere when they discussed the aliens, or what they plan to do with them in the new game.

I've been seeing this everywhere - complaints that our new asari is ugly. Please explain this to me, because I honestly don't see it. I think she is very cute. How is she ugly? Because she can't pull of the Furiosa look... and because eyebrows.

... Perhaps it will be that there are people who still do not know that women can have different facial features from each other. I could even imaging some of them might be disappointed or saddened to learn that some people think a woman is only a woman as long as those some people thinks that she is. ... (Ignoring the topic itself. My current opinion on the subject of Hmburglar looks can be summarized with: "Meh.") Oh please. This is not about the female gender in general, or that women "can't have different facial features". Or that "some people think a woman is only a woman as long as those some people thinks that she is". No one is contesting the right of anyone to look the way they want, the internet is full of horrifying evidence as to how far people take this "ideal" without anyone stopping them. However, just like players who are interested in male LI would object to being presented with chubby squat man-boobed version of masculinity as a LI, players who are interested in female LI are not interested in female LI characters with an ice breaker jaw, or other unappealing characteristics. Saying that a particular woman or female character is ugly, is hardly an attack on the entire female gender. That wasn't actually what I meant with that segment and I did apologize for it when ZipZap2000 called me out on it. I don't have the entire exchange otherwise I'd have showed it but for some reason I cannot access the old thread where this is from. This part was never intended to come across as accusations of misogny or such: it was some really bad phrasing on my part.
I've said in threads about the asari back on the old forums that I can completely understand it if people were saying that they wanted a conventionally attractive asari and expected it due to how the asari mostly looked in-universe in the previous games. I wasn't trying to disparage anyone for not finding her attractive or even finding her ugly: You think she looks unappealing and downright ugly as would others: I and others might disagree with that but neither of us would be wrong in how she looks to us because it's subjective taste. There are plenty of people I've been told is attractive that I don't find asthetically interesting or pleasing.
It was this thing that escalated from "I think she looks unappealing or ugly" to "She's a man!", "Bioware is pushing an agenda!", "She's not even asari!". It couldn't just be that this was a matter of taste, it couldn't be that this shot didn't properly show her, it couldn't be just this asari: no, this asari was factually a man according to some, Bioware was clearly conforming to some sort of an agenda according to some and this was clearly a sign of how there'd be no conventionally attractive people in the entire game according to some. It was like seeing a repeat of some of the posts about Cassandra from Dragon Age: Inquisition.
The last bit of my post was about the insistance that the asari was legitimately a man by some because of these features when these features are not masculine and are common where I'm from. I legitimately could not understand why they were viewed as such. The part you quoted was unfair of me. Like I said, ZipZap2000 called me out on it and I did apologize for it which is why I believe went back and removed it from the post. This is actually an unedited copy.
Note: I've removed the quoted part.

idk, i always liked how she looked. i didn't understand the uproar because i always thought it was the angle her head was in, and i guess i'm not shallow enough as to call a girl a man because of their jawline.
