I think there's just a resistance to another character that shares some features with Sera from DA:I. Personally, I'm not excited to have another squadmate spot reserved for an Asari and I'm especially not interested in her role as interpreter/guide of precursor ruins and artifacts. Being forced to mindmeld with Liara after every core mission in Mass Effect 1 was bad enough, don't want to repeat that experience. I do not believe is Peebee likeness of Sera at all, I am one of those many people that dislike Sera with passion even before the game. The vibe I get from Peebee is a Han Solo/Indiana Jones kind of personality. People dislike her because of her name and more relax vibe and clothes, and of course because she looks like a person and not a super model from a fantasy.

It's definitely a constellation of things that make for the whole 'Space Sera' impression that's going around. I was just saying that I've seen that particular label being bandied about in comments across the web whenever a thread gets going on Peebee, fair or not. If she is anything like Sera, I don't know if she'd even be into the mind-melding thing. Every other Asari treated it like some solemn ceremony. From what they've described, solemn and "traditional" are not Peebee characteristics. She's more likely to just talk a lot and not give a shit about what anyone thinks. Besides Shiala, I don't really think there was much solemnity in it. After action meeting with the entire crew sitting around us? Embrace eternity. In the burning ruins of the human homeworld while we're prepping for a big final battle? Embrace Eternity (must have been awkward as shit for the injured soldier on the cot nearby). As I alluded to in my original post, I'm just generally weary of the asari so that's why I'm not that amped about PeeBee being the focus of so much of the promo materials up to this point. I'm sure I'll warm up to her as I play the game, so it goes.

So happy I'm not the only one who likes PeeBee or is at least willing to give her a chance. I also agree that I don't really get where the Sera from DAI comparisons are coming from either. I personally liked Sera. On my first play through of DAI I didn't really enjoy her but on my other playthroughs I started to like her a lot more. But the comparisons of Peebee and Sera really confused me. They don't really seem anything alike at least to me and what I've seen/heard so far. From the little we know of Peebee she seems really into science and more of a lone wolf. While Sera was kind of the fun, wild character who literally had a big group of people she associated with. I also just wanted to quickly say that I really applaud Bioware for making characters who don't necessarily look like they just got off the runway. Beauty is different for everyone and we should embrace more untraditionally beautiful looking characters rather than tearing them apart.

The only thing that bothers me is that "casual" outfit that she use for the missions. where's the AJAX armor for her?. I hope the guys on NexusMods already started to make that dream come true

But yeah, Ryder running around looking like robocop while Peebee is running to a Thriller-inspired flash mob is a little jarring.

I'm definitely going to be putting her in some normal armor if we have the option... I think her outfit is fine as casual wear, but for volcanic planets with enemy robots shooting at us? Not so much. It sounds like we can change the outfits to a point so here's hoping we get some practical options for her (even if the stupid breather masks are here to stay, sadly ). And yeah, I am kinda over seeing her in the marketing. Not because I hate her, but because I'm curious about everyone else and we either haven't seen them at all, or we've only seen them and have zero information. So each time they show PeeBee, again, I'm like 'Nooooo Bioware why!?' I remember following DAI's launch and hating Vivienne a little bit too cause she was on all the marketing - meanwhile the only images we had of some of the other companions were from a far off group pic that had been leaked. Funny enough, in the end she wasn't even that important in the game...

Either way I think Peebee looks great, at least the artist in me likes her design and vibe. Or course the hardcore nerd in me also hates that she will have that jacket in space environments but I am use it since ME 2.

I agree, seems to me to be some sort of harness or something meant to keep gun holsters in place or something. Why she would need gun holsters when the guns in this setting have magnetic locks or something is beyond me

Putting aside the fear of some people to have another Sera (although her background already differentiate her from that, since she's a scientist/academic), a lot of criticism was and is based on her first pic of her (which actually showcased her with something that look like proper armour ). I doubt she'd get many criticism about being ugly if the first time she was shown was like at the PS4 pro footage or her menu shot. It might also be the reason why Bioware decided to hold off showing Liam and Cora, if their faces were still not final.

Sure, Peebee and rules may mix like oil and water, but that isn't a bad thing in and of itself. be honest: Can we honestly say Sera was any kind of Acedemic?

I don't really get this either. And I keep hearing that it's because she has a Sera vibe. I don't really understand where that's coming from? I think it has a lot to do with that early video where they used PeeBee's face to demonstrate their facial animation engine. They ran her mug through a quick series of fairly extreme facial expressions, and some observers decided that means she is 'juvenile', 'bratty', etc. It didn't take some asshole very long to make a PeeBee/Shrek meme, which is one of the reasons why we can't have nice things (like facial animation demos - someone out there always has to make developers regret sharing things like that). Unlike other folks here, I don't think her face has changed much (if at all) since that demo vid. Her features all look pretty much the same to my eyes. Different angles, different lighting, more normal facial expressions make a lot of difference in how a face looks. How many times have we all come out of a character creator and found our character didn't look the way we expected once we see them under different lighting, from different angles, with different expressions? As for her outfit - they don't seem to be able to design many female follower outfits that aren't deep-wedgie-and-cameltoe tight or exposes skin. I guess I'll just have to be glad it's her tummy instead of cleavage this time. I agree, seems to me to be some sort of harness or something meant to keep gun holsters in place or something. Why she would need gun holsters when the guns in this setting have magnetic locks or something is beyond me Well - in the trilogy, armor had points to attach firearms on the back. PeeBee isn't wearing that kind of armor, though, so... shrug.

be honest: Can we honestly say Sera was any kind of Acedemic? I would argue yes. She was expert, near savant, at understanding and responding to the wants/needs/plights of Thedas' lower socioeconomic strata of citizens. No one was more dialed in. And the Red Jenny network of informants would put Littlefinger's network to shame. All this too while maintaining a perfectly unassuming level of aloofness. Not traditional academia, true, but I'd say she was a genius sociologist.

The wants and needs she understands best are her own - the lower socioeconomic, non-elfy elf. She certainly has more than her fair share of street smarts (or perhaps street wisdom) and apparently has done a lot to help others like herself. I'm not convinced she'd qualify as a genius sociologist, but more of a survivor who helps others in similar situations.
