And yeah, 5.56 nato is generally loaded hotter than .223(the reverse is true of 7.62x51 vs .308 iirc). Yea, but the chambers are subtly different. There is a small bullet jump in 5.56. This allows it to have a slightly faster propellant without risking a catastrophic pressure spike. Theoretically, it should mean slightly less accuracy, but it also means you can get better velocity from shorter barrels. In .223, the bullet enters the barrel directly. I frankly don't get it why there are also AR-15s with .223, as well as AR-15s with 5.56/.223. I also don't get it why there are full size revolvers that come in .38 Special as well as .357/.38. Perhaps .38 revolvers are cheaper than .357 ones? I know there's a slight increase in FPS due to .38 spcs not having to clear a bit of extra unrifled chambering(due to it being slightly shorter than .357).

I know there's a slight increase in FPS due to .38 spcs not having to clear a bit of extra unrifled chambering(due to it being slightly shorter than .357). .38 revolvers can be made a little bit lighter and smaller as the shorter and lower pressure round requires less material in the cylinder, which is one of the heaviest parts of the revolver. That's why most modern revolvers strictly chambered in .38 are very small carry guns.- Which also makes sense since through very short barrels (3 inch and less ) there is relatively little difference between.38 and .357, but the .357 will release a ton of muzzle flash (and recoil) from the powder that didn't burn fully in the tiny barrel. AR15's chambered in 5.56 usually consist of military surplus parts, or barrels are taken from a military contract run in the factory, which then is chambered in the military version. Also, an AR chambered in 5.56 has the benefit of being able to shoot both .223 and 5.56, while an AR chambered in .223 should only be fired with the 223 since the 5.56 has more pressure. Great if you have access to a lot of cheap 5.56 surplus.

Great if you have access to a lot of cheap 5.56 surplus. Well, when I was writing that, I was in the past, thinking about things that were, back in the days when I was an active shooter. I said "full size". There used to be revolver models that were identical, except for the shorter '38 chambering. If you bored out the end of the chamber, it had no problems with firing .357, because the steel and cylinder were otherwise identical. But yeah, I belatedly realized that those revolvers are probably not common anymore? .38 going mainly to small guns. My own carry gun is a S&W blue, "round butt", K-frame 2½" .357, that I've had forever. It's rather compact, but nowhere as small as some .38 special. Have you ever tried the classic S&W J-frame 5-shot Chief's Special? I have fairly reasonable hands and it feels just ridiculous to hold and shoot. They even made it in Scandium-Aluminum alloy with Titanium cylinder for minimal weight. I've never handled any of those lightweight though. I bet the recoil is a bit snappy. I still don't see the point of making .223-only AR-15s. Could it be some state-legislation issue? Like .38 Super in South America, because civilians are banned from .45 and 9mm?

Interesting new 5.7mm pistol/carbine with a 9 inch barrel that uses (50 round) P90 mags that load horizontally.
With a stock and foregrip it'd be a pretty nice SBR ^

Here's a pretty nice bit of firearms ingenuity, a folding stock for an AR platform, that functions by disconnecting the buffer tube when you fold the stock.
ARs typically don't have folding stocks due to how the direct-impingement mechanism requires said buffer tube to be in the stock, but they found a way to manage a folding stock despite this.

Contemplating trading in my Taurus 65 .357 revolver with its 4 inch barrel and 6 round cylinder for a Taurus 608 with an 8 round cylinder, 6 and half inch barrel(with porting!).
Shoting .38s out of this would be akin to firing .22s i reckon.

Shoting .38s out of this would be akin to firing .22s i reckon. If you already have a .357 I would suggest going with a .44 magnum, 2 shots more and a little longer barrel wont be different enough to merit a new purchase I think. But that's my opinion. I always buy vastly different firearms so I don't have redundant equipment. You also need to get an AR-15 variant. Seriously, a self loading .223 rifle is probably the most important - and effective- weapon you can own, besides a reliable 9x19 service pistol. That's fundamental equipment. Glock 17 9x19, AR-15 variant chambered in .223 with a 16.5'' barrel and an optic, and a scoped precision rifle in .308, these are the most important.

Speaking of owning a rifle, i wouldn't mind owning a new production AR-16, which was the .308 precursor of the AR-18(essentially what the AR-10 was to the AR-15). Imagine a modern AR-16 with synthetic furniture and picatinny rails... *drools*.

It's a damn shame we can't import for FALs(or other such rifles). just get one of those hybrid things that you can hot swap modules between both 5.56mm/.223" and 7.62/.308" iirc there are several options some even include extras like jumping to 450 socom or 6.5creedmore to make them more appealing and the majority are in the AR platform so you know you might just be able to get something thats both worthwhile owning and does double or triple duty (depending on what extras you get with it) sure its best to get a dedicated bit of kit for each calibre if possible but sometimes having the option to swap the barrel and mags is enough to make its viable and of course it lets you swap ammo based on price or needs of the day, I mean 223 is shit for anything but light armoured antipersonnel tasks (with a .22lr conversion a 223 can be good for squirrel or rabbit hunting without ending in overkill) but its crap for most larger game, and you dont really want to busting out 450socom or 50beowulf on anything less than a large bear or a well armoured person (because the ammo is expensive and the return on investment just isnt there) and yeah you can get a dedicated plinker probably cheaper than a conversion kit but that just means owning multiple weapons when a few extras will make your primary more versatile/

Good news for those who wanted to conceal carry a desert eagle.
Side note: If i were to get a DE, it'd be in .357 or .44 mag since they're more common and more importantly, cheaper than .50 AE.

Shot a friends Desert Eagle in .44 Magnum, definitely the caliber I'd get if I could afford one. VERY pleasant super accurate shooter, out of this thing the 44 mag recoils like a 10mm Auto / .45 ACP +P, fast follow up shots are totally doable. Also 44 is magnitudes cheaper than .50 AE and can be found in basically any store. Now .357 I would not get, in a big gun like this its a too small round, its like shooting .44 Mag in a .500S&W.
