I'm reading the JOhannes Cabal, Necromancer series at the moment. For fans of black humour and Lovecraft it's a must read. Jonathan L. Howard, the author, really knows his metier. I'm currently in teh 4th book, The Brothers Cabal, and I'm still eager to go on. So far, tehre are 5 Books and some short stories set in this universe. Johannes Cabal himself is a bit like Sherlock Holmes dark and sarcastic brother. The stories themselves are varying quite a bit from book to book: In the first book, Johannese tries to get his soul back from the devil himself, the second book is a supernatural crime novel, in the third, Johannes is forced to lead an expedition into the Dreamlands, where he has a creepy meeting with Nyarlotothep and some ghouls, and currently, he is trying to stop a creepy cult with his brother Horst, who accidently became a vampire during one adventure Here is a link with all Cabal stories

I finished Thinner. Still my least favorite Stephen King novel that I've read so far. Now I'm bouncing around between In the Garden of Beasts, Joyland, and this short story collection by Neil Gaiman.

Don't know it this works or for how long (am linking image directly from Amazon, due to certain idiocy). I recently finished this: Ok? well let's see. Anyway, this is a book I have a bit to say on, but it would be wrong to throw out spoilers. It's a book I was overall very impressed with. But 75% through I absolutely loved it, despite all the things the author had got wrong about climbing and the conditions on Mount Everest. Misunderstandings and ignorant assumptions. You can still tell that he made a real research effort to get things right, even if he didn't. This is however mostly a non-issue. It won't affect most readers, and I had no real problems glancing over it. 75% through I had a moment when - wise of other novels destroyed by their formulaic mould - I prayed that I would still love it as much when I had finished it. Alas, that was not to be. Even as brilliant, possible ideas/ways to wrap up this story just jump out of the pages straight into your mind, - no, that is not how Simmons does it. Instead he use imbecile hollywood clichés to forcibly cram the story into the tired old publisher's/bestseller formula. A form the story so far fits so poorly, that the sledgehammer process inevitably mangles and damages it to a tragic extent. A real pity. This could easily have been a major masterpiece with only a few really small changes. Still, it's still a good book. Mostly a great read and memorable. There's no such thing as perfect, and it's not so much that it's flawed, but that it could have been so much more. I still recommend it.

I think, peculiarly, I like the Expance show better than the books. Currently reading the second book, and it is better than the first, but yeah... the show feels more unusual & Holden/Miller more likeable w/o the inner monologue.

Man of WarIf you buy the whole series today, its only 2.40 on kindle. Just follow that link and hit buy. 7-19-17 80 cents a book is a steal. Or if you like steampunk, looks like this is a 1.40 to start the series. Huh, he did lost fleet so this should be fun. Pillars of RealityAnd this series is kinda alternate fantasy mishmash with 1800s tech. The Shadow Campaigns

Thanks for the heads up! Let's try this again... Thank you for reposting! Those are 2 excellent books. I started reading them based on Jordan Peterson's recommendation. I'd read 1984 in high school, but I didn't appreciate it then like I am now.

Thank you for reposting! Those are 2 excellent books. I started reading them based on Jordan Peterson's recommendation. I'd read 1984 in high school, but I didn't appreciate it then like I am now. It's kinda funny (and sad), isn't it - because for me it was the same. Usually the books I was forced to read I couldn't really connect to. When I came back to them later I suddenly realized that they were not boring or stupid at all. We never read 1984 in class, though, but "All Quiet on the Western Front" and I remember hating that book. I think one reason for that was that I am a very fast reader and we usually had to read aloud in class and it was just a bore for me to listen to someone read a few sentences while I had finished the whole page already. Also having to dissect every single word (exaggerating here) put me off quite a bit. Even more so when it came to poetry. As for what I am currently reading: I finished "The Innocent Bone" by Cody McFadyen yesterday and am still undecided what I want to read next.
