The Mists of Avalon. Started it before I found out about the author's horrible past. I don't know if I can finish it now. Before that I read and loved "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet". Really enjoyable science fiction with a multi-species crew that is well written. The book is fairly light in tone which is what I needed after GRRM. I have this book, and as much as I want to say that real-life stuff doesn't affect my view of a book itself, it feels like some sort of stain has found its way onto the pages of my entire book collection. A lot of people say to separate the art from the artist but I have a hard time doing that especially if they are living and sales go to them. What Bradley and her husband did to children is just....too much. At least she's dead and my sale didn't support her directly.

I'm reading a couple of books simultaneously: Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein, From the Ruins of Empire by Pankaj Mishra, and Destiny Disrupted by Tamim Ansary. The latter two books are about the histories of Asia (from the Mediterranean coast to China, I believe Japan might be included as well. I haven't gotten too far into the book yet.) and the Middle East, respectively. Having graduated from college recently I haven't had time to read for fun; it's mostly been books on Western history with the occasional modern Middle Eastern history thrown in.

"Broken", an XCOM fanfic. You have my respect for being a history scholar. I got a few years left on the path to my degree. (Also respect to Nim for having an English degree.)

How To Be An Ass Whipping Boxer by JC Champ Thomas.
It's less a guide to becoming a better boxer, more an entertaining collection of anecdotes from a carnival boxer and braggart.

The Paladin Caper by Patrick Weekes. It's pretty much the popcorn flick of books, but quite entertaining. Must admit I went into the series with some fear of full on sjw propaganda, but there really isn't much of it and what there is fits the setting.
Dude really hates knees, though... Poor bastards get kicked 10 times per fight.

A collection of short stories from Asimov. I have a few more books I want to get through before I tackle the Foundation series.

I'm reading Atlas Shrugged. Meh. It's a nice story but not the earth shattering eye opening thing that some of my friends said it would be. “Two novels can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs.” Sorry I couldn't resist.

I'm currently reading Patrick Weekes' "The Palace Job". It's good, but slow going because I just finished an English degree (where I had to read a ton of other things) and I'm crazy busy with work. I've been thinking getting this but since I really don't have time to read... Well maybe in winter then.

I'm terrible for starting books and never finishing them. My most recent failure is The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Started reading it on a plane and haven't gotten back to it yet.

Currently about three hundred pages into Mike Carey's Fellside. Pretty good supernatural prison thriller, but so far I don't love it as much as his Felix Castor series.
I'm still trying to work out while his publisher has rebranded him as M.R. Carey for his two most recent novels (and he's still with Orbit, so it can't be that.) Are they worried that his comic book work is keeping people away? I'd have thought that Lucifer and The Unwritten had a good enough reputation to bring readers in rather than driving them off.

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini The Sanctuary Series by Robert Crane
I have all four books of the first, but only the first four (of around 9/10 with one still to be released). Defender, the first book, starts off with a bang, and doesn't really let up. ~120 people go off to kill a dragon. ~30 survive (the rest are killed permanently (some get pushed into a lava flow, so resurrection isn't possible)). Talk of BAD leadership.....

Reading Marko Kloos - Frontline Series Next will be Peter V. Brett - The Skull Throne
I'm only just getting to the meat of the story, so I can't really speak too much to that yet, but I am enjoying it quite a lot--which is a bit of a surprise, because I usually don't like first-person narratives that much. This one was really easy to get into; Haldeman's writing style is very punchy and accessible, even when he's dealing with the more technical, sciencey set-up bits. I'll report back when I'm done (now I have a motivation to actually finish it. )
