chalked full of content that should have been in the movie, I'm sure. I would find it at a store and flip thru it first. I did, and it has a somewhat annoying Young Adult vibe. I don't mind reading novels like that, sometimes....depending on the author's writing style and use of grammar. If I enjoy the story, I can overlook the 'YA Vibe' (as you put it). I just have to bear in mind as I'm reading who the intended audience was, and accept it. I think I posted on here earlier about Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Trilogy and how appalling her grammatical mistakes were. I am interested in the story, and I think at some point I will go back to her books that I have and read them....And I know that every book as things like spelling errors, typing errors, perhaps minor grammatical mistakes that an Editor/Publisher doesn't catch before it goes to Print....I mean, that's just a given because no person and no process is perfect. But the errors she made in Black Magician were HUGE: It was things along the lines of "Who's shoes is this?" And they were so many in number as I got deeper into each book that eventually it just became a huge turn-off. I'm very picky on who I choose to read. I stumbled upon Brent Weeks, and I was instantly hooked on not only his writing style, but also his pacing. Very fast-paced, engaging....page-turning. And now that I'm so used to reading that....Others seem to be *fake yawn* ugh, a snooze fest. They don't particularly capture and hold my interest. So as you said I like to flip through and read at least the first chapter of a book before I decide to buy it.

Finished the Licanius Trilogy. Pretty solid. Kind of tropey, but the ending was pretty well put together. Would recommend to fans of epic fantasy. Its not the next ASOIAF or LOTR, but its a fun read.
Now comes the hard part: overcoming the post-series hangover and figuring out what I'm going to read next.

Lieutenant Sean Barrows falls into a plot of sabotage and destruction brought on by the Aryshan Empire. But Earth demands more of his service.
Earth needs a spy.
Sean must genetically modify himself to appear as an Aryshan and infiltrate one of the enemy's warships to bring his superiors information on their destructive capabilities.
Can Sean survive in an environment where the aliens share telepathic capabilities and are naturally paranoid of outsiders?
Matters get worse for humanity when the Aryshans develop an invisible threat...
Fans of The Old Man's War by John Scalzi and The Ember War by Richard Fox will love this epic space opera.

So finally finished Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion. What a great set of books, the first two are great with great writing and interesting characters and a great story, the second two I thought were not quite of the same stature with the fourth except for the last 25% being the least of them. This mainly to the focus on Raul's journey in the middle and it being fairly boring and repetitive in its process (IMO) and I never need to hear the word "Kiddo" ever again. Don't have a lot of time to go into the books so will just say I thoroughly enjoyed them and the ending reduced me to tears. I am interested in reading Simmons's other works in particular Ilium and Olympos, has anyone read them ( AnDromedary)? Firstly though a return to Terry Mixon's Empire of Bones for book 12, hoping this one is bit better than the last. Wouldn't mind if he ended it TBH but I am doubtful of that.

I agree that Raul's travels do get a little tedious at times in the fourth book (I thought the whole episode with the kidney stone was a bit weird ). For me though, this was offset by the other characters, especially de Soya, who is probably my favorite character in the Cantos and in general, I loved everything about the Pax. That whole blend of medieval style crusader/inquisition order in space ships, who horribly kill and then resurrect themselves to achieve FTL travel ... they were really awesome bad guys! I also really liked the ending, finally a long book series with an actually satisfying ending. I haven't read his other books. The genre doesn't appeal to me as much, otherwise, I'd give them a go in a heartbeat.

Re your spoilers: Tedious is a good word for it and yes the Kidney Stone thing was as painful for me as it was for Raul!!! It did do the job I think Simmons wanted in portraying the nature of the people though and that made it all the more shocking when you fight out all of them died except for one later on. It was just over egged as grandmother would say. Other than that the writing overall was really good, story was great and Simmons held it together really well right to the end tying things up nicely. I thought the whole final bring Aenea back from the past by The Shrike was really clever, I expected something like that but it never occurred to me that is how he would do it. I was also completely hooked into the kid really existing and Raul finding it. I would love to have had more of a view from the PAX side of the rebellion against them and also from the Cores view. But Hyperion etc. were brilliant, thanks for the endorsement of it and if you get round to reading Grass I am not sure it will be as great as Hyperion but I hope you enjoy it. Actually just on that about 10 - 15 years ago I discovered a list of books called SF Masterworks and set out to get the first 25 and was mostly successful but some just weren't in print anymore. Most are good to great but here is the list of 75, Grass is at 48 and all of the ones I have read are great but some were a slog because of the authors style. I think I saw another updated list and Hyperion was on that but have not been able to find the list again but it surprises me it is not on the original list. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks

I'm currently getting to the end of book 4. The Character shuffle (when comparing to the tv show) is pretty insane at this point. So the way I figure it, Drummer is basically an amalgamation of Bull and Sam and Ashfort is a pretty different character altogether (and much much cooler in the tv show). I also like Anna a whole lot more in the books than I did in the show but that makes sense as she is a very introspective character and I can see why they had some trouble getting her to work without the ability to communicate her inner thoughts.

Yeah it's a real character mish mash, I hated it TBH. Drummer in the books is Fred's Security chief but she plays a much bigger role in later books but she essentially takes over Bull's role (he was 2IC not Ashford) and is made captain instead of Michio Pa who they wrote out in the TV show and then gave Ashford the role of 2IC. Drummer (like Pa in the books) leaves at the end of the book and I assume she will pick up Michio Pa's role for the next couple of series (as Drummer pretty much disappears from the books except for minor things) but it will again be interesting to see how they reintegrate her into the Drummer role she plays in the last couple of books or if they sub someone else in. Sam's role is taken over by Naomi or written out, which is a shame as I thought she actually gave a real insight into Naomi's personality as her best friend. One of my favourite minor characters. Anna's role was severely diminished and she is one of my favourite characters and I was also disappointed that they killed off her rich friend Tilly as I liked her and she provides some solutions to the ship's ownership later on that it will be interesting to see how the show that. The internal monologues of all characters in the books was always a concern for me for the shows as there are a lot of them. It really lessens the insight into most of the characters I think.

In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off.
Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

Don't worry Desmond will save the earth from the Coronal eruption..... hope you have played Assassins Creed 3 or that'll mean nothing. Never got past 2 so...no It was part of the modern story, the modern character Desmond gives hi life to allow an Isu project to save the Earth from a Coronal Eruption.

Finished Victory on Terra by terry Mixon last night, it was enjoyable but compared to the first 4 or 5 books the story is a shadow of it's former self and has no depth to it.
More was written about one character pursuing another character in her alternate universe than about the enemy in the Imperial palace they were fighting.
The book was also incredibly short but when you are writing 5. 6 or more other series of books maybe that's to be expected.
Anyway I am being negative but it was free for me on Kindle, so can't complain and as I said it was enjoyable like a good comic.
