Nice, that's a Henry lever action rifle mod. 1860 in .44 rimfire. Around that time the absolute best cutting edge gun you could get your hands on. I have the 1866 model myself, in 44-40WCF.

dazk Still reading Grass by the way. I just barely made progress because I had to play Horizon:Zero Dawn until early in the morning hours. But it is indeed getting more and more interesting. Those Hippae are up to no good, that much is clear to me already.

I got ALL of his novels for Kindle for just 3€. Amazing! Never read Charles Dickens before. A friend told me that's his favorite novel of the man. Sooo I decided to start with it. The beginning is slow and boring and I was puzzled what's supposed to be so great about this novel but once Miss Havisham entered the stage I perked up. What a fabulously vile creature! As a non native speaker I'm struggling a bit with the language. My understanding of written English is usually excellent but something about old-ish British English fries my mind. Shakespeare in school was a NIGHTMARE.

I listened to the audio version months ago and have been eagerly awaiting the written versions. This novella pretty much pushes all of my fiction reading buttons.

I've read all of Dickens novels but those were via paper books.
You do get great 'complete works' deals on older authors.
For me the best thing about Dickens novels is the ancillary characters (such as Havehsam).

Starting a re-read of The Grace of Kings (Ken Liu/Dandelion Dynasty Trilogy), been a few years since I read it and wanted to brush up before I start on the sequel (Wall of Storms).
Really liked this one the first time around, hopefully the sequel is just as good (and the third one is published on schedule, supposed to be out in 2021- between ASOIAF and Wheel of Time, I'm not a big fan of unfinished/ongoing series).

The first book I didn't find all that super interesting, as I mentioned in an earlier post, but said book got mildly interesting at the very end, so bought the second book of the series ''An echo of things to come'' . Not expecting much, but maybe it turns out to be a more interesting read. Lets see.-

Thought it was a solid, competent fantasy trilogy- nothing superlative, but not really actively bad in any way either, I didn't feel like I wanted my money or time back (and even enjoyed re-reading books 1 and 2 to refresh my memory once 3 had come out) so was worth the price admission imo

Just wondering, are there any ''must reads'' in the fantasy genre I missed so far? My absolute favorite is the ''Black Company series'', I continued with ''Kings of the Wyld'' and '' Bloody Rose''. In the Sci-Fi genre I read ''The Vagrant'' trilogy which was pretty damn good, and John Scalzi's Old Mans war, which I did not like all that much. I don't want to read The Expanse since I'm watching the series already, same goes for A Song of Fire and Ice and of course LOTR. Any suggestions? Also, I wonder if there are any good sci-fi books with horror elements, same with fantasy-horror. So far I have not found any good books covering this kind of niche genre.

Yeah it definitely picks up as it goes along, but that's not unusual. And without spoiling anything, I'll just say that he does a better job than usual setting up -> sticking the landing on the ending. That's a bugaboo for lots of authors, so its a not-insignificant point in Islington's favor. And I may not be the best person to get fantasy recs from, I don't care for some of the authors/series that are frequently cited as some of the best/most loved in the genre- for instance, I absolutely hated the Malazan series, and I don't want anything to do with Brandon Sanderson or Mistborn. I find Sword of Truth series (and Terry Goodkind just in general) to be intolerable, and couldn't even get through the first Dark Tower book. I've never even tried to read Harry Potter, and I think Dune is maybe the most overrated work/series of fiction of all time. So, take my opinions with a grain of salt I guess. And as far as fantasy goes, the only must-reads imo are LOTR (and esp the Silmarillion- Tolkien's best work imo, fite me IRL if you disagree... jk, only not really kidding) and ASOIAF. Maybe Wheel of Time, maybe. I'd strongly recommend the Dandelion Dynasty series that I mentioned a few posts above, I really enjoyed the first book and so have high expectations for the sequel. And I don't read as much as sci-fi as I would like (I'm more inclined to read non-fiction when it comes to e.g. cosmology and astrophysics and so on) but a couple that I particularly enjoyed were the Sparrow series (Sparrow and Children of God) and Solaris (far better than any of the film adaptations)- would recommend either/both of them.

Finished another Allan Quartermain novel last night, quite good, lots of metaphysical stuff to go along with the usual interesting African adventure with a bit of a twist at the end on how the afterlife is viewed.

So just started book 8 of the Dresden Files, have enjoyed all of them but keep telling myself I'll take a break after finishing one since book 4 but can't help myself. Glad Murphy and Michael are back early in this one. missed them in the last book.

I don't know, if they are must reads, but I like the books of Tad Williams. The Dragonbone Chair saga is very classical high fantasy with really interesting characters, while Otherland for example, goes more into SciFi territory. Never where from Neil Faiman goes more into urban fantasy territory and is really great. And I really enjoyed the Newbury and Hobbs books by George Mann. They combine fantasy with Steampunk.

I'm reading The furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch atm. It's a small novel set in the Rivers of London universe, where Peter Grant is investigating strange ghost sightings in the London underground trains.
There is a new book in the Rivers series coming up, Tales from the Folly, which I really look forward too.
