Trailers are so seldom truly representative of the work they're advertising that I'm surprised that this is still a thing. Pixar films generally had very poor trailers, yet the films themselves ended up being very excellent. Does anyone recall any of the Dragon Age: Origins trailers? I mean, just look at that shit. If you didn't know anything about DA:O, what impression would you get from the trailers alone? BioWare games don't really have the best trailers, and up until recently, generally just showed a lot of stuff that doesn't really happen in the game at all, at least not nearly the way the game actually presents it, like the Take Back Earth cinematic trailer of Mass Effect 3. At least for Andromeda it seems to be taking actual in-game stuff. In any case, it's compressing scenes that are likely many hours apart into just a couple of minutes. Of course it's gonna be a total lasershow. It can cut the other way too. Sometimes a trailer is amazing, but the product it is advertising turns out to be awful. Sometimes the advertising folks are just a lot better at their jobs than the people actually making the product. Speaking of Michael Bay... A perfect example of the above was the movie Pearl Harbor. It had probably one of the best teaser trailers of all time, but the film sucked.

Oh gawd, don't remind me of that DAO trailer. I remember watching it after playing ME1 and being utterly disgusted and not interested at all. It represented everything I hated about western PGS at the time: medieval setting (dark gloomy visuals), orcs, gore... I only bought it because I was in love with ME1 and it was cheap used. Didn't like what I saw of ME2 either. Looked like a shocking departure from the geeky vibe of ME1. Too much cool action hero nonsense. I ended up loving both. ;P Seriously? That trailer looked incredible to me. I think it very accurately represented the concepts behind DAO. The game simply looked nothing liked the trailer that marketed it. Two (admittedly dim) coworkers returned the game upon realizing just how badly that trailer oversold the game.

Most (visually) unappealing trailer I have ever seen of something I ended up loving.

The Sacred Ashes trailer is literally what made me want to buy the game despite knowing damn well it wasn't actually representative of the gameplay. I definitely didn't regret the purchase.

As far as this thread goes I really wouldn't mind if it was "merely" as good as something Bay would produce. It beats something like 2001, which I realize is a cinematic classic, but just boring as hell to watch imo (a much better book). Of course, I want some depth to the story and characters around as well, but after DAI I wholly recognize the importance of pacing. ME3 for all it's flaws kept me on the edge of my seat right up til the end. I think we all tend to look and one or two things and say the game needs to have this when in reality it needs to be well balanced across the full story-telling spectrum and integrated with gameplay well. I think this is why TW3 is lauded so much, which is not a perfect game, but it does virtually everything well and integrates seamlessly into the openworld environment.

Never understood why people don't like 2010, when the sequel had better fleshed out characters, actual dialogue and decent action throughout that made me way more invested in what was going on than the original film. "Show, don't tell" is nice, but Kubrick went a tad overboard and left us with a movie that can be largely muted without anyone noticing.

2001 was mostly a one and done for me. Yes, I watched it, got freaked out, reflected on it and looked up an analysis of it and was blown away... and really, I have a great memory of it but there's no way I'll sit through that entire thing again. It was boring even as I was watching it. Ultimately worth it but I'm not that patient usually.

I love 2001, but fully understand the comments.
The original Solaris though? Jesus. That makes 2001 look like an edge of the seat roller coaster ride action flick. At least the first hour, which I'm afraid to say is all I managed. I hear it picks up later though. Time for another go maybe?
As for the MEA trailer? It's OK. I don't put much stock in them myself. There's just not really anything they can show from the RPG side, which is what I'm most interested in. So we get some action, some people talking very very gravely about stuff, a couple of pretty scenery shots and the protagonist looking a bit moody. About what I'd expect really.

napoleon yes. I'm shrugging off your "heroic populist condescending" card in light of the stakes. I'm sorry but I'm not going to let mob rule take over and say making things more Michael-Bay is ever a good thing, ever. I don't care if 6 people, or 6,000 people like your post. I draw a line at veering into Michael Bay territory. It's ridiculous. I stand my ground. That said, it remains to be seen. Perhaps the trailer just messed up the tone. I will play the hell out of the game anyway, enslaved fan that I am. My "heroic populist condescending" card? I was disagreeing with the elitism in your post. I don't think that makes me... whatever you just called me. My post wasn't even about my opinion on the trailer it was about how I dislike people deciding who gets to be fans or not. Cinematic trailers have are rarely indicative of actual gameplay or story. People have already posted the Dragon Age: Origins trailers as evidence. Cinematic trailers are there to look pretty and drum up interest. The Mass Effect 2 trailer people are posting was not a cinematic trailer it was the launch trailer. The cinematic trailer for Mass Effect 2 was this: The trailer is pretty different from the actual gameplay and story of ME2. Just like the ME:A trailer its just there to look pretty and drum up interest.

This may be only tangentially related to your ongoing debate, but I actually see a huge, positive difference between the old presentation style and the new. These CGI movies tell us little to nothing about the actual game. The MEA trailer, choppy as it may be, is comprised of actual game footage. We are able to pause it and assess what we are seeing. It actually means something. I strongly prefer game footage trailers to CGI movie junk. The next question becomes, "Is the game footage presented truly representative of what gamers can expect?" We all remember Watch Dogs, after all. In the case of MEA, I see no reason to doubt. It looks like a natural, ME-evolution of DAI.

Not only it tells us little of the game, but it provides an incorrect portrayal of the events, like Grunt's recruitment, or the relationship and role with Cerberus.

I think they stand a good chance to return it to its former glory if they focus on the rpg elements and go from quantity action moments to quality instead. Best. Trailer. Ever.

Is it going to be Michael Bay-esque? That transformers worm and the DUB STEP JUMP CUTS in the trailer has lead many to believe that it will be. Who are these "many" you speak of? Can you point them out so I can call them all idiots? Seriously nothing concrete has been shown but when dubstep and "possible" robotic worms are where some draw the line I really wonder why Bioware even bothers with their pandering to a fan base so quick to criticize their every attempt to try something new

I think they stand a good chance to return it to its former glory if they focus on the rpg elements and go from quantity action moments to quality instead. Best. Trailer. Ever. I'm a fan of Numenera, so I'm curious to see how this game ends up being. It's development seemed challenged, to be kind, so I'm not even cautiously optimistic. I do hope it's good. If it gets good reviews from people I trust to be unbiased, I'll definitely give it a look. I love RPGs and I really like the setting. The tides are the part about which I'm least enthusiastic. They don't fit the setting, really. Oh, well. I'm sure they can be "made to fit", for the purpose of this game.
