My heart bleeds for those poor Hollywood actors that didn't get the adoration they expected to go with the sacks of cash they received. Poor gentle artistic souls. Except not all of them get those sacks of cash. Not even most of them actually. Apart from the few A-Listers that are probably what you're thinking of, the majority of actors do anywhere from "OK" to "can I crash on your couch tonight?", especially given LA's ridiculous costs of living. Someone like Best, who wore a stupid hat on his head and was CGI (and one of the most hated CGI characters of all time, and one whose role kept diminishing in subsequent films)? Not exactly Andy Serkis. He was probably on the couch end. Not that sacks of money are a terribly efficient cushion to emotional misery brought on by active hate anyway. Jar-Jar fucking sucked. But that's no reason to drive a dude to suicide.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ahmed Best received personal attacks that go beyond Jar Jar fucking sucks.

The reality is that most of those who cry for famous actors who were "harassed" only do so as virtue-signalling. It is sad that there's a political angle even here. But worse than simply virtue-signalling, which, while annoying, is by itself passive, is when shit like this is used as part of an agenda to silence dissent. The separation between actor and role, between fiction and reality applies here too. Ahmed Best is not Jar-Jar, Jake Lloyd (or Hayden Christiensen) is not Anakin, and Kelly Marie Tran is not what's her name from The Latest Travesty. By that same token, criticism of the fictional characters should not be inflicted on the actors' personal lives, but neither should the affronts perpetrated on real actors interfere with the separate criticism of their fictional roles. The former should always be condemned, the latter should never be thrown in with it. No exceptions.

Doesn’t surprise me. The fans are ruining Star Wars and directors don’t want to deal with the toxicity. "Fans" can't "ruin" Star Wars. It's simply impossible for them to do so, they have no say on what direction Star Wars takes. Fans can only react to it. And react they did. There's a lot of people who are willing to wipe fake tears on behalf of poor poor directors like Rian Johnson, but not many people who are willing to give a thought to the sheer emotional significance Star Wars had for so many people, and what tearing it all down means to them. This was a piece of culture (and I'm not exaggerating here) that was vandalized in the name of ideology and a director's ego. The point of Star Wars wasn't to be some high-brow attempt at an artsy mind-fart, it was a cultural artifact that unified an extremely broad and diverse group of people, this new abomination is anything but, in many ways it exemplifies the disdain the upper class elites feel towards the great unwashed, the "Hoi polloi". They are ruining it by creating a hostile environment for anyone who disagrees and threatening those who worked on it because it’s not what they envisioned. Nothing has been torn down.

I'm not arguing with you about how you should feel, I'm simply informing you how a huge portion of Star Wars fans feel. Or in other words, "I'm not telling you how to feel, but if you don't feel the same as us, you're wrong".
This pretty much sums up the entitlement of the Star Wars fandom in a nutshell.

That's a very good strawman my dude. Basically the exact opposite of what I tried to get across here. I emphasized that this is *my* position, a position that apparently quite a few people (if the loud wailing from Hollywood is any indication) share. And it isn't an equally strawman to suggest that because we only hear "loud wailing", that must mean most fans are unhappy?
Rather than the possibility that the vocal fans are drowning out those in the fandom who either don't care, don't have an opinion or don't want to suffer the backlash of admitting they liked the new direction the franchise is taking?

Fuck Jar Jar, but that child actor who played as TPM Anakin didn't deserve the sheer hell our autists gave him. Really that's your response? "Fuck Jar Jar"? Yeah, i remember when TPM came out KFC had the characters faces plastered all over their food containers. Seeing Jar Jar's mug on my 20pc bucket completely ruined my appetite. Fuck Jar Jar, but that child actor who played as TPM Anakin didn't deserve the sheer hell our autists gave him. Hey! We might be crazy, but we ain't that crazy. Lol combine crazy with a vindictiveness that gives a Greek god a moment self reflection, and we got ourselves the SW fandom. Fuck Jar Jar, but that child actor who played as TPM Anakin didn't deserve the sheer hell our autists gave him. Yeah, you can't really put a decade's worth of acting experience into a nine year old. Exactly, he was just a regular kid who's acting ability was soley dependent on George Lucas who makes veteran actors like Neeson, Portman and Mcgregor suffer under his script. Nevermind Jake having to work on a set that's mostly green screen too, but i unironically enjoyed "Jingle All The Way".

They are ruining it by creating a hostile environment for anyone who disagrees and threatening those who worked on it because it’s not what they envisioned. Nothing has been torn down. Keep telling yourself that. I'm not arguing with you about how you should feel, I'm simply informing you how a huge portion of Star Wars fans feel. So if this becomes a lesson on the dangers of hubris for Hollywood directors? (unlikely, but here's hoping) I don't really see that as a negative, since this disaster managed to kill the vast majority of my interest in any further SW productions by Disney. It would take something truly amazing to drag me back into it. TLJ's historic dropoff and Solo bombing is very telling.

Sure the fans can ruin Star Wars. They are now a vocal interest group which content creators feel they have to appease in order to avoid backlashes like, say, campaigns to not watch their films. If the backlash against TLJ affected sales of Solo, then now they're affecting the very viability of the franchise, and maybe there won't be future movies, etc... Not to mention that the negative environment that the fans can create on social media is pushing away the good talent from future films. Who would want to deal with the fallout from this fanbase, if the fans reacted poorly?

You misunderstood what I meant by "loud wailing". The point was that the only reason that some people are working as hard as they are to de-legitimize criticism of TLJ as "racist, sexist, etc. etc." is the sheer amount of it. If there wasn't so much of it, the best approach would have been to simply let it die. Given a certain level of backlash however, trying to de-legitimize detractors is the only viable play if one doesn't want to acknowledge it. Yeah, because the fandom will definitely stop pissing and moaning over every single perceived flaw in TLJ, when the people calling them out on their BS decide to stop. That's the only reason why this constant griping has continued for over six gorram months at this point.
TLJ isn't a film without flaws, but the fandom seriously need to chill the hell out when it comes to this movie.

Making a SW movie should have been a slam dunk, a child who knows nothing about film-making couldn't have fucked it up as thoroughly as Rian Jhonson did. George Lucas and the Prequels beg to differ.

TLJ isn't a film without flaws, but the fandom seriously need to chill the hell out when it comes to this movie. No one "needs" to do anything, that's the wonderful thing about living in a free society. I can piss and moan about how TLJ was terrible, and you can complain about me pissing and moaning. What I see isn't a "film with flaws", what *I* see is practically sacrilege, so yeah, I definitely understand why people feel the need to drive the point home as it were. Seriously? "Sacriledge"? No wonder that filmmaker doesn't wanna do a Star Wars film...
