As for it being philosophically vacant episode 8 wore its lessons on its sleeve, people hated it. So JJ opted for more show not tell, if you still don't like it... then maybe there is nothing they can do to please you at this point. False. All we want (the real fans) is three things; a story that honors the characters (new or old) and is respectful to the lore. Secondly a COHERENT PLOT. Thirdly a satisfying conclusion (that if it MUST have identity politics in it they're subtle & don't de-rail the entire fucking narrative) It's really not much to ask What makes you and your fellows any more of “real fans” than anyone else?

All but the top squares on the furthest right column should also be checked. They have a master behind Anakin.

We don't like modern Star Wars compared to what it was beforehand? o.o It speaks quite well of taste if nothing else. Also the degree of fans certainly was far higher in the past, you had people who bought the comics, novels and games back when those were options for purchase, compared to the fair weather casuals that make up the bulk for the fandom of the new franchise. So degree of investment is supportive of the prior generation being "more" invested financially if nothing else.

*Snort* Sure homie, blame the people that have been spat on and had their intelligence challenged for the last half decade for being sick of this incarnation of something they used to love, it isn't the fault of the people managed to make every idiot move in the book... Seriously though, this defense of the plot contrivances is weak to actually return to the point. Because the Death Star had a weakness to exploit without it seeming like an utter waste of time, oxygen and brain cells unlike this nonsense. Same for its sequel, same for the Lucrehulk in episode 1, basically anything that wasn't episode 7 or 9 actually managed to successfully do this without anything but minor issues. They managed to convey that these things are dangerous, are designed to be dangerous, they aren't something that approached casually or without difficulty and the fucking worst bit is that "Resistance" Fleet, doesn't even need to use the dumb fucking homing transponder plot mcguffin that was established in this very movie, it literally only applies to the faction that lives there. ...You know the people that have been there for three decades. sigh... sorry if my words poked a tender spot. But really at this point, I liked it and these movies... you did not. That's all the point I was trying to make and maybe your energies would be better spent then talking about a franchise you clearly despise. I wasn't blaming you for the state of things at all. You know the old saying of no one makes a more intractable enemy then a former friend. But despite it all? Despite them shoving the EU aside, despite them producing garbage film after garbage film, despite the retarded inclusion of the modern day leftist politicking, I am willing to return to the franchise should it right itself again. I don't see it occurring at this point hence why I consider the franchise dead but I'd glad if I was wrong. But this has nothing to do with my criticism of this movie, me finding the franchise an abhorrent mockery of everything that made it great once upon a time, has nothing to do with the flaws of this movie. .___. Even if the position were reversed and I was a fan of the "sequel trilogy" it doesn't magically make the issues raised by me here go away.

Tbh i don't care about the whole what is a true fan thing beyond no standard having hipsters who contribute to the decline of an ip because they toss their money at any product irregardless of it's quality. JJ the director of TFA and TRoS knows that he created derivative schlock, and called his own consumers who enjoyed his rehashed products insane. You think he feels differently about TRoS after he made bank?

So I am sure you all knew it was coming, I am sure there will be lots of debates to be had over this...but right now my list of my favorite Star Wars movies....meh I just realized instead of being dramatic since I've posted it before I'll just go ahead and say...
Rise of Skywalker is my second favorite of the movies...very close second...to Return of the Jedi. Probably going to need to watch it a couple more times to see if it is better...but meh probbaly not.

I mean, the entire ending of this movie was just preposterous. I'm not even going to go into them landing a ground force on the ship to destroy something that was totally exposed on the outside of the ship and could have been destroyed by any attack fighter. Did they just want to show off the horses or what? This movie had entire scenes that served no purpose but to create mcguffins/quest items, whatever you want to call them. A droid can read a language, but can't tell anyone what it read so they have to find someone to hack it? Why is it programmed to read it at all? It was just ridiculous. Heh, and how did you like ancient looking dagger with inscriptions wirtten in language unknown to anyone and droids are forbidden to translate that is the only thing capable of showing the way to... a 30 years old wreckage the whole galaxy knows about

Where they go to a planet known to Poe because of his newly introduced criminal history (pulled from this air), and meet a someone from his past who hates him. Then literally in the next scene, all is forgiven, no real conversation, catharsis, or come to Jesus moment, and she goes on to give him the key to a brighter future for her (another item made up on the spot) to allow a rescue mission. Then after giving him what she says is her ticket off the planet, she shows up fine at the end because she somehow she somehow got off the planet. It was all just preposterous.

The theme of Rise of Skywalker was faith in your fellow man - that you aren't alone, people will support good or right actions, and gain strength/confidence from those that came before and acted similarly.

That's my point. If you can program all the droids not to give the translation, why not program them not to be able to read it at all. That should have been the law. That makes much more sense. But that's not even my biggest problem. My biggest problem is that all of this was only thrown in, like most other things in this movie to create the next quest. Things never before seen or mentioned in the universe were just pulled out of thin air to keep the story going or create something they needed. Even if they had to just make up new force powers. It was just poor storytelling all around. It was painstakingly obvious that all of the movies in this trilogy were created independent of each other, with no plan in the beginning. The lack of foreshadowing and build up is a problem that stems from TLJ because Rian only cared about slaughtering JJ's mystery setups like younglings while not providing anything for the next film to work from or by not synergizing his script with JJ's treatment for TLJ. TRoS with all of it's newly introduced plot points had felt like a third of the film was what JJ wanted TLJ to be but suffered due to the film's runtime, and time constraints. TRoS could have easily been two films like Harry Potter's finale but i have a suspicion that Iger just wanted the shitshow to end. JJ Abrams said that the Emperor wasn't even in the last movie in the beginning. Which means at some point someone just said, we still need a big bad, wouldn't it be cool if the Emperor came back, and they just threw him in. But even the plot points introduced in the movie didn't make sense with other plot points introduced. You spend an entire movie trying to kill someone, and would have succeeded if not for the intervention of someone else. Then at the end, you say it was my plan all along for you to come here. That was point when my daughter said that doesn't make any sense, why was he trying to kill her then. I had no sensible answer for her unfortunately.

My main problem was with the pace of the movie.
Everything is way too hectic, and fewer sudden developments and more quiet character moments would have helped preserve the tension through the second half. Instead of just leaving the audience dazed and confused.
Besides that, I have a hard time buying either Kylo's or Hux' developments, and don't rightly understand Rey's.
Lots of things I found unsatisfying, but it was still a good time.
The way Rey makes use of her and Kylo's bond at the end was really cleverly set up. A great example of establishing rules and then using them in surprising ways when the audience least expects it. Something the trilogy has obviously struggled with otherwise.

Reading through these comments and through some of the things I have seen in other reviews it is sometimes interesting to see how different people can have entirely different reactions to the same stimuli. For instance it made perfect sense to me, Palps never wanted her dead he knew Kylo couldn't do it, it was just some extra motivation to get her to where he needed her to be. Hell maybe even encourage her to go down the dark path by getting her so pissed at Kylo...wich kind of happened. OH and this is also sort of his MO in setting up situations where he would always win no matter what happened. See the fall of the Old Republic, Anakin's Duel with Dooku and Luke's duel with Vader. Anyways onto my official review and deep thoughts on this movie. The good:Rey is a...Potter: So might've mentioned this a time or two but one of the reasons I do think that A New Hope and The Force Awakens are two entirely different movies is because Rey and Luke are two entirely different characters. Now I know that all three of them are cut from the same cloth but Rey has always reminded me more of Harry then she did of Luke. Her theme, her demanor, her feelings of hopeful optimism despite living in some shitty circumstances (though in her case that was part of her flaw), her not being a whiny indecisive brat...etc. Well Rise of Skywalker like trippled down on the comparisons to the point where it almost felt like I was watching a Harry Potter movie: Snake talking...healing snakes. Need I say more.
Her parentage and lineage is a big one.
And she frickin buried the lightsabers in the sand on Tatooine just like Harry disposed of the Elder Wand. Rey finally gets her moment to shine: One of my 'backhanded complaints' about The Last Jedi was that Luke Skywalker/ Mark Hamil was such an utter bad ass, so great in their acting, so powerful in the Force that he hijacked the sequel movie from Rey and any of the new character...I didn't mind too much since it was such a joy to watch Hamil acting his heart out in TLJ and made me fall in love with both him and the character all over again...but it was dissapointing. It also kind of proved the reason why JJ was so reluctant to give him much screentime in TFA because the temptation to turn him into an utter badass was too strong and the presence of Luke in any movie was bound to be problmematic for those very reasons. But finally the characters of the sequel trilogy were all there together and all had a lot of juicy screent ime with one another. It was quite the joy to see a lot of the sequel characters just interacting with each other throughout the course of the movie. Rey especially. She wasn't bad ass enough to polevault herself into the number 1 favorite character spot but she was everything I was hoping she could be. and while her character arc felt maybe a little out of left field in this movie, just a little though, because she was facging entirely different issues in the last two movies...it was still someting that resonated with me and I found deeply sympathetic. I know what its like to fear oneself. And then to triumph over that fear. I also really liked the fact that they allowed her to get dirty and grimey. Kylo Ren's Journey: So they decided to redeam him in the end. I am actually down wit it even though I really did not want it to happen. At one point I was like 'Come on Kylo... I never thought I'd say that'.
I think in the end the reason why it works so well is they didn't make a lot of fuss about it. This was a man who was clearly not wanting to do the things he did... he was manipulated by two different Force Sensitive beings and all he wanted was a little love, sympathy, and connection...which he got. Sure it may've been a little fast, as well as Rey getting over her own issues, but this is a movie, it has more important things to do then hand wring over stuff that has already been hand wrung before. The Knights of Ren: They ended up being lightsaber fodder, you thought they were important? Na. Mark Hamil steals the show...again: The scene on Ach To was pure cinematic gold. Rey basically decides that she is too dangerous to be around anyone so she is going to destroy the past, destroy everything and Exile herself and then LUKE FRICKIN SKYWALKER comes out of nowhere catches the Lightsaber, call back, call back, call back, Luke tells Rey that he was wrong...if we needed more evidence from the Last Jedi and the Last Jedi being awesome... and then he lifts his frickin X-Wing out of the water. While making another Call back but Luke just owns every scene he's been in in this entire series. Chekov's guns the shit out of this movie: So one of the big complaints about TLJ is it did not do a good job of paying off the set up from TFA...I disagree with this assertion, by and large, but its there. So they kind of course corrected in this movie, maybe over course corrected, by really laying on the set up really thick. It was like 'ok here is this new concept'...'ok this new concept is being used again just incase you missed it the first time, here are the rules,'...'ok now its important'. They did this two or three times in the movie, to be fair there were also a couple of more subtle instances of foreshadowing and pay off...but I am a sucker for this kind of thing, as well as Redemptive arcs too...and both ultimatley worked in this movie The culimination of butt moments: I have to think about this more but this is something that modern cinema I think is doing better at in general, and maybe Star Wars in particular. Things not going how we expect them to, apparent triumphs being turned on its heads into defeats and our heroes actually having to work at things. It first really came up in Rogue One where things were starting to look hopeful and then...the Devestator/ Death Star showed up, once again this movie just took this concept to eleven: Especially in the final battle.
Oh they have a weakness that will be easily exploited to foil the evil plan...no they transfer it onto a fortefied area.
Oh Kylo and Rey are facing off against Palpatine and they are going to wreck shit up, maybe we'll get a light saber battle or something....nope he defeats them easily and then uses them to fill his life force back up.
Oh the reinforceents have arrived things are looking up...no Palp just lightninged them all.
I mean yes they would eventually get out of this but pretty much till the last second it set up a more and more desperate situation till the issue became how will they get out of this And it didn't even occur to me until Rey echoed her own words at the beginning of the movie, more cinema gold follows...I think I'll just leave that there.
The bad:The Beginning: So imagine the scene; I am very nervous about this movie. Talk about retcons and ignoring the Last Jedi and changing everyting in that movie going through my head, thoughts of JJ and Disney playing it safe because of their bold experiement failing with Last Jedi, and then the Lucasfilm LTD appears on the screen, I do a bouncey clap thing in my seat and turn to my wife and say 'now I'm excited'...and then I tear up at a Long Time ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away because this will probably be the last time we will ever see something like this...and then that opening crawl happened. And the words out of my mouth after it finished was 'oh dear'. That Opening Crawl was by far the stupidest I have ever seen. Maybe jut expecting too much from it but it seemed so poorly written and anti climactiv...fortunatley that was pretty much the worse bit from the movie... Lightspeed Skipping: So another oft criticized bit of TLJ was the Holdo Manuever because apparently people should just be willing to commit lightspeed kamikazee like that willy nilly. They even mention in the movie (unnexxessarily) how that was one in a million. But I defended it since it happened in Deep Space, pretty much all SWs battles happened in the orbit of planets before, and it has been intimated that Hyper Space does not work near planets...for one reason or another. Yet in the montage of places Poe was going to was what looked like a planetary environmen...a city...and they just skipped away on the next target. That shouldn't have happened. The end: I really think more then Luke and Leia's force ghosts should've shown up at the end...like Anakin and Ben at the very least. The Interesting/ Random Musings: Rey's Parentage: So this is definitley a case of doing good things with something that could be bad and it is kind of at the heart of maybe the disconnect with this movie and the last one and some of the other issues that has cropped up within the Sequel Trilogy.
For reasons that I have talked about before this was pretty much the only place left for them to go. Again it never made sense ultimatley that Luke would go into exile for good reasons, he would've had to do someting horrible...and he did...something he felt really bad about...and he did. And it never made sense that either Luke or Han or Leia or Mara Jade would leave their daughter with Unkar Plutt. Sure she still could've been related to Kenobi in this scenario...and they also still did the cop out thing though because her parents were apparently good people in the end who hid her by...selling her to Unkar Plutt.
Here's the problem. It felt kind of forced. It felt like the fandom made the theory and the directors went with it because it was the theory for them. Abrams in an interview apparently indicated that this was not the plan...even though it kind of felt like it was. But yea, this was just done in the final hour.
And then it kind of cheapened the message in Last Jedi whereas you don't need family bloog to really have the force...
And it replaced it with the message you coose your own destiny no matter who your parents are. It works, but I think I kind of prefer the old lesson. Its not the disaster I thought it was going to be.
It worked though because in the end it kind of is the same lesson. Your family is what you choose and you choose your own destiny. It was the only path they had left and they did the best they could go with it. But it is something I am torn on. Is this the end of Star Wars? So genre fiction and series fiction in general leaves things a little open for potential sequels and other tings to happen and well...this didn't. I mean sure Return of the Jedi might not have left a lot of room for the future stuff, but we know that Lucas did want the series to be a trilogy of trilogies. But the Force looks balanced, the Force seems balanced...for now...and Rey seems at peace... But then there is the fact she has built a new lightsaber and the track at the end is called 'A New Home'. So we'll see but this felt like an end..and wat an end it is. The Messy Middle: Kind of interesting that sort of a sub theme here is, as Filmjoy put it, things would end up in the messy middle. I really don't think that it was as clear cut as everyone being good. Rey was a little dark, ben was a little good, none of the extremes... Palpetine's Threat: So Palpetine makes a rather interesting threat to Rey in their final confrontation. That she will kill him, his spirit will possess her, and she will rise as the New Emporess.
This is a rather interesting new idea to introduce to the franchise and one that echoes some of what we have heard about the Sith, it has a few issues with it...but also two main things.
1. This is a win win for Palepetine, he is so good at this, because has set up the situation where Rey would've struck him down out of hate for killing her parents, or fear for her friends...which would be a background to sort of get in there. The plan was rather brilliant, until it wasn't.
2. I have had a lot of problems with dark side corruption, it always has been sort of 'ok it makes some sense...but' sort of deals. This offers another POTENTIAL answer to the problem. What if this happens or some form of this happens...pretty much all the time. That Dark Side spirit or darkside energy is just released during the death of a Sith or heavy dark side order thta can feed on the hate that is already there...and maybe even possess the person who did the slaying.
Which Palpy there did mention that they would become 'one', so it really isn't possession in the sense of one being overpowering the other more of the Flemeth way of possession were two beings would become a new being. Thus the original personality would be kind of intact...but now a dark side corrupted version of that personality. Conclusion: This movie was pretty great. A great way for the saga to finish. Its a bit weird though its a bit punchless at times, there are much better lightsaber battles (Episode III, Episode VIII), better space battles (Episode VI), and better reinforcements are here scenes (Endgame). But there are also no major flaws in this movie. No hated characters. Plenty of pleasing moments, jaw dropping moments, moments that called me to tear up and it stands up well against both modern cinema...but especially amongst other Star Wars movies. I mean most of the complaints I have seen about this movie seems to be either ignoring the lore, ignoring the movie, or ignoring the genre conventions that 'Star Wars' uses. And it does this while at the same time expanding on and improving on many of these conventions. The magic weakness in the doomweapon isn't quite as easy as shooving a proton torpedo (or two) down an exaust port. Sure maybe its convenient...but Its Star Wars. So yeah, I have a lot of Tier 1 movies...its an interesting phenemona that my least favorite storytelling medium has so many things in it I love...but I guess they also have less time to get things wrong. Second favorite Star Wars movie...blah blah blah.

Rey finally gets her moment to shine: One of my 'backhanded complaints' about The Last Jedi was that Luke Skywalker/ Mark Hamil was such an utter bad ass, so great in their acting, so powerful in the Force that he hijacked the sequel movie from Rey and any of the new character... Wait, did we watch the same Episode VIII??? Luke Jake was utterly, utterly useless! Gee: If only they'd shown some of this WHILE HE WAS STILL ALIVE AND IN A POSITION TO HELP HIS FAMILY INSTEAD OF BEING A USELESS OLD BEACH BUM REFUSING TO TRAIN ANYONE!!! The Last Dumpster Fire's message wasn't just that family doesn't matter, but NOTHING matters. Past victories don't matter. Being a decent human being doesn't matter. Fighting for what's right doesn't matter. In the end everything will turn to sh*t anyway, regardless of acts or intentions. Evil is too strong. Good is too weak and/or ignorant. The best you can do is buy a little time. Then wait on a rock to die. Force, I hope so. At least until Disney sells the franchise to someone who knows what they're doing

At least until Disney sells the franchise to someone who knows what they're doing yes it is growing increasingly clear we watched different movies...or at least had very different perceptions. Just like you'll never agree he was a hero of legend I'll never agree that he was a bum...nor do I think that was TLJs message.

Looking at the (lack of) drop off at the box office between Sunday and Monday, it's very possible Rise of Skywalker has much longer "legs" than the Last Jedi. We know the Last Jedi did very well at the beginning but then, maybe because repeat viewing was down, box office revenue sharply fell. With the Rise of Skywalker though that may not be true. Will be interesting to see.

I just like STAR WARS. OT, PT, NST (New Sequel Trilogy) EU/Legends, Games...and everything else. It's STAR WARS. Period. The End. I love it, always have ever since I was four years old.....always will, even when I'm 104. Nuff Said.
