Why does Rey even want to be a Jedi at this point? Because the peöple making these mövies are unöringinal hacks whö cant write anything imangintive. I löve when peöple say that "well yöu fans cömplained that the first mövie was just a remake then the secönd mövie is tötally different and yöu still cömplain." That aint it Sally. TLJ was a hörribly written film with huge plöt höles, stupid characters and löre that döesnt fit with the rest öf the mövies. The funny thing is öut öf all the media Star Wars itself was built tö be öne öf the few that was structured tö have multiple films in a series. It is made tö be a film serial.

but do we have a workable definition of "old-school fans" which doesn't depend on how people reacted to the new films? You can debate the definition if you wish, personally the exact term is the last thing I care about in this context. I could simply say "the majority of hardcore SW fans" with a high degree of confidence. (and before we start debating semantics in regards to "hardcore fans", I mean fans who followed the series for a long time, and had high interest in the various products included in the SW franchise) "Old-school fans" is fairly acceptable in my view as well, as it denotes high interest in the franchise over a long period. Anyway, the semantics thread is probably somewhere else. Well I’m an old school fan who enjoys all the films.

Oh good, now we have our resident ambiguous ambivalent analyst joining the conversation. Brought the semantics kit?
Andrew: yes, Snaggle repeated himself. Interestingly, he repeats the same issues that I repeat, that budgee repeats, that almost all of us on the Rat Trap side repeat. More redundant = less entropic. We are conveying a clear message, and one that is awfully hard to argue with. You can hand wave all you want, as you appear to be a Stormtrooper yourself - bad aim, drank the Kool-Aid.

Pfft. They were always going to sell books. If something from the EU is useful, why not use it? Decanonization means that you get to pick and choose. That sounds like a lack creativity to me. Make over 20 years of EU non canon so you can freely rip it off and call it your own.

Can we at least agree that the sequels are generally disappointing on a very basic level?

Definitely a good one. My favorite example probably - Hux: "ON MY COMMAND, FIRE!!!" Tarkin: "You may fire when ready." (That cold British accent... priceless) The first sounds like a child throwing a tantrum, the second sounds exactly like you would expect someone in Tarkin's position to sound. Tarkin was a cold, calculating SOB who'll blow up a planet to advance his agenda. Hux is the type to eat laundry detergent on a dare.

It's a calculated attack on the old-school fans Risking an entire franchise for something this petty? I don't think so. At least, the motivation isn't as simple as that. It's probably more accurate to say that they don't care about old-school fans of SW. Pissing off certain parts of the crowd is probably something they saw as a bonus, even while underestimating the scale of the backlash they might receive. As for the "why" of it, it's probably a mix of various reasons, could be that different people at different levels had different reasons to go with it. Some of them clearly had ideological motivations. Others merely miscalculated. It's simply fucked up management. How often did they exchange directors? How often did they rewrite their scripts? Anyone remember MEA? Compared to Disney's Lol Wars Bioware did a lot better with a project heading for the drains.

Tarkin was a cold, calculating SOB who'll blow up a planet to advance his agenda. Hux is the type to eat laundry detergent on a dare. Tarkin had screen presence, Hux doesn't. Old generation actors; presence, experience, precise modulated delivery. New generation actors; petulant, exhibitionist, egotist, raucous.

Well I’m an old school fan who enjoys all the films. Wrong. I’ve enjoyed the OT, old EU, prequels and the new movies. Just because I like something you don’t doesn’t invalidate my opinion.
