Me, I like swtor's solution. Character customization vendors with companion customizations were awesome. If it worked in a MMO, it should work plenty better in the confines of the SP. everyone's happy, tastes accounted for, and is not a huge resource sink.

Hmm, I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that my first reaction to the companion reveal for DAI was "wow, they ALL look terrible". I believe those were even artwork pictures that were supposed to look BETTER than in-game. Some characters I ended up finding quite hot (Dorian) after playing a while, especially in combination with their personality, but except for Cullen none of them were "conventionally beautiful" to me. I do understand where readher is coming from. I don't think his opinion is crazy at all. I know several people (among them women) who agree that the DAI characters were not all that attractive. Calling them" ugly" is ridiculous hyperbole but "not really hot" I agree on. Whether or not that is so very terrible is a different matter. But as a simple observation, it's not unfounded imo. So I actually do agree that the art design of the companions was... unusual. While I do not find Cassandra and Josie (or Sera for that matter) ugly, I could TOTALLY understand why men were less than happy. And when I first saw Peebee I actually thought "oh boy, here we go again". She and Sara are again NOT ugly but they are not Liara or ME1 Ashley. And I don't really understand why people get so defensive about it. Women like hot guys too. It's human nature! Whatever the hell is going on with character faces I call the DAI Effect from now on. Until I've seen all squadmates I cannot tell if there's a SJW agenda at work or if there's just something seriously wrong with Frostbite or the Bioware designers and animators. However, Morrigan looked GREAT, so it's not necessarily the claymation version of the trilogy's gorilla faces. That weird cartoon doll look is definitely a new engine problem, though. It's probably what makes the faces look this weird. But oddly, it does seem to affect female faces way more. MAYBE it has to do with female faces being smoother and so it shows more? Or the fact that hair looked so bad they went with terrible short styles to "hide" it? Or that abomination of an outfit that Josie wears? I have no idea, really. But if there is an agenda, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not about spiting men but about SOME female gamers feeling threatened. Or at least that could be what Bioware thinks. Cassandra is VERY popular with female players, is she not? I adore her too! I can totally see how DAI was not made for straight men. Which does NOT mean it was meant to punish them. Maybe Bioware felt like making a game for women and gay men for a change. Dorian's character flatters both gay men and straight women, perhaps again more so women. I too thought his flirty banter with female inquisitor was amazing. It was HOT. Nothing wrong with that once in a while. There is probably no vile intention behind it. Unless of course all the guys in MEA turn out to be super hot and all the women look more average girl next door. I still think EVERYONE but Morrigan and Cullen looked kind of weird and not particularly attractive in DAI. And yet the DAI companions ended up my favorite bunch in that franchise. Looks aren't everything. But wanting attractive love interests is nothing evil and should not be ridiculed by everyone imo. Women are just as shallow, they just get off on different things in addition to looks, see Solas. Eh, I prefer female humans to asari as a general rule (they're still attractive, but I prefer hairs over their crests or how they're called), and I'd say Peebee, as revealed in the PS4 tech demo, is better looking then Ashley in all three games. Though I'd say that they're both attractive/beautiful. It's fine though if people prefers other characters. I prefer some of ME women over Peebee, but that doesn't mean She's not attractive or pretty.

See, I think theres a reason for it
When I first got myself a half-decent tv, I was completely astounded because like... I would be watching shows and if there was an old person they would have so many WRINKLES which wouldnt even show on my tv beforehand, or at least not show as much, and I was like
Because HD is a thing
I think DAI did the same thing, and because everything was so much better quality it lowered how good people looked
Even in Skyrim, on the PS3 I was like yeah and made a good looking character within a few minutes... tried to do the same in Skyrim and I was like ewwwww she looks so ugly... so covered it up with war paint
HD makes people look worse... true story
And with some characters their animations look a little off somehow... especially around their mouths, which probably doesnt help things
Morrigan was still hawt though

Meh, people are too easily scared these days... it's almost as easy as offending them. But isn't that what this whole thread is about? Some people are afraid that the characters are going to be ugly and some people are afraid that they are going to be to, "beautified" (in lack of better word). And everybody try to tell the each other why they are right. Ah, the beauty of humans.

I dunno but I don't see anyone afraid the characters are going to be too attractive. I also don't see many people "afraid" they will be fugly. What I do see is people annoyed with the design direction changes certain game companies these days made in order to pacify certain - more or less qualified - voices that criticized them in the past. All the hyperbole, shitposting and joking aside, that's what it comes down to...

Okay I will be serious for a change.
As a 90s baby I grew up with games that were much simpler and nobody seemed to give two squirts about what characters looked like let alone all of these petty, annoying politics. And this isn't exclusive to BioWare and their fans.. Obsidian are copping a lot of shit for creating a "leftist SJW fantasy world" for their latest release Tyranny, the reason being that both men and women can be in places of power (women own lands but cant man ships, and vice versa) Additionally people complained that there were no romance options.
In a nutshell I wish people would just appreciate the game for what it is regardless of politics and stop acting like spoilt little children.
The OP is no different to the people they oppose. A "SJW liberal" may complain about a lack of equality be it race, gender, blah blah blah.. And yet he obsessively trolled the original BSN back in the day because his only pixel hook up options weren't his type. And I would identify with his "pain" had BioWare not already provided players with "conventially attractive" romance options like Isabela, Lel and Morrigan.
This is just me, but at the end of the day, who gives a fuck? Hell, I have my own issues with DAI but its more to do with the execution of the gameplay. Has stuff all to do with a mechanic that takes up a minor percentage of the game or the level of attractiveness of characters, which is up to the individuals tastes anyway.

Morrigan definitely looked great. Leliana was fine as well. I'm not saying that all ME:A females will look ugly, but considering DA:I and what we have of ME:A right now I have every right to be skeptical until they prove me wrong. They're definitely capable of making attractive females in Frostbite considering those two examples. Whether they made an unfortunate decision in DA:I on the LIs' looks or it was a conscious one we won't know for now, but we will know once we get to see Cora. We already have Scott looking great, while we're yet to see any attractive female. And it's nice to have a woman on my side for once. Strange how guys never defend ugly male characters and been playing unrealistic muscular men since 90s without any problem, yet women feel the need to defend ugly female characters. I really don't know why anyone would want any character (and especially an LI) in a game to not be very pretty/handsome. Yep dai showed it was perfectly possible for frostbite to translate conventionally attractive women but creative decisions on design of female li were I say rather niche. Now maybe that was just accidental but I have to say I'm slightly nervous of a repeat based on same accidental design or a deliberate desire not to get criticised over the political notion of objectification from certain quarters. I hope they think it's possible and desirable to portray conventionally beautiful female li whilst not repeating silly Miranda me2 ass camera angles.

Somewhat amused that the OP's (current) avatar approves of the Inquisition teaser trailer rendition of Morrigan.
I seem to recall that way back in the halcyon days of 2013 when that particular trailer premiered, there happened to be a similar cry of "Ugh! What's wrong with her face!" from certain quarters of the fandom.
Surely I'm mistaken and we've never before had any complaints about how characters look, because I can't fathom how anyone can beat a dead horse for this long?
