Think Ian said on twitter that they will put a toggle on Sam for general stuff like mining and envoirmental status.

So...endgame spoilers: Did Scott resetting the SAM implant undo all the crazy integration that SAM gained into Ryder's physiology after Alec's death? SAM said something about resetting to default, but TBH the endgame was so hurried that I'm sure I missed stuff.

SAM said something about resetting to default, but TBH the endgame was so hurried that I'm sure I missed stuff. Yeah, it seems that SAM had accidentally usurped control over some important physiological functions from Ryder after he got tangled up in their brain, which is why they were at risk of dying when the Archon severed their connection.
By resetting the implant to normal, SAM gave back "admin privileges" to Ryder and allowed their body to function as it should without him shouldering the burden. SAM's presence wasn't actually integral to keeping Ryder alive, the only reason they'd never tried to untangle them before was because they didn't want to risk it potentially killing both of them.

Ah, got it. Thank you! I suppose it would've been awkward at the beginning of the game if Lexi and SAM tried to untangle them and it killed Ryder for good. Oops, no Pathfinder again. Better step up to that plate real quick, Cora?

SAMs comments should be put on the Gamepad loudspeaker. I guess this would improve the feeling.
I liked that when SAM and the Ryders said 'we will do it together '

My feeling on SAM is that he's a "baby" artificial intelligence. Like the geth at the dawn of their sentience. He hasn't yet learned to wrestle with things like free will, having a "soul," etc. For the moment, he is content to continue learning, thinking, and growing as Ryder's symbiont instead of a fully-fledged individual in his own right.
That could definitely change in the future, and it would be awesome if his character growth changed based on what Ryder did. But I'm not going to keep my fingers crossed for that level of reactivity from the game.

Glad to see I don't seem to be in the minority in actually liking SAM - the poor fella got slated in the reviews! Not that he is without his flaws, of course... "Pathfinder, this area can be mined for..." YES. SAM. JESUS CHRIST, I KNOW, SHUT THE **** UP!!!" I still prefer EDI, and think comparisons between SAM at this stage of his development and EDI or Legion are a little unfair. As we learned, the Geth becoming self aware is what led to the civil war on Rannoch. By the end, Legion has evolved so far as to not only consider himself an individual, but to sacrifice himself for his own kind. EDI had begun to show growth as an individual person even towards the end of ME2. (Side note: I still to this day have not officially settled on my "canon" colour-coded ending, because seeing her flash before Shep's eyes just kills me. But Destroy feels like the "right" choice." ) I think SAM's "blandness" is what adds to his charm. Yes, it's actually bland as opposed to, say, EDI's deadpan attempt at humour. But there still feels like there's a distinct personality there. I love my SisRyder's (is that what she's called?) relationship with him, especially around his humour. I think he's hilarious, in a monotone AI way. Also: My Ryder was outraged when she thought that Dr. Aridana had tried to kill SAM. Maybe it's more my headcanon at this stage, but it really feels like there's an actual affection between the two (which is kind of inevitable with a symbiotic existence, I suppose.) However, I am curious about his long-term development. Based on the trajectories we've seen, he is likely to continue evolving, and thus may possibly desire to be independent at some stage. Unless he remains truly content with symbiosis forever. I'm only around 23 hours in (just on Voeld after doing Havarl), so I don't know how it pans out for the rest of this game yet. But, I'm rather fond of him so far. Actually, I seem to be the opposite to most reviewers: The 80s-style cheesy Space Opera dialogue has me in fits; I love SAM; and the NOMAD drives me around the bend (pardon the pun!). Although now I've figured out the controls better, it's less maddening. Seriously, though: if Shep was a bad driver, then my Ryder is a menace to society!

Suddenly, I have this wish to have in next Ryder game a Geth as squat mate. We also have a working krogan colonie, a third Geth party that thoughts himself 'This stupid Nasara believers, we do not even want to mentioned in the same sentences and the others do nothing than watching other species without doing sth again the bad Geth image' does not sounds to insane in my view. This possible Geht squad mate is fascinated by Ryder and jealous of SAM and insults him again and again.

Considering it were Geths who scanned Andromeda, I think the possibility of them being in this galaxy are quite big. The question is - will people trust them or not? When they left, Geths were still a huge problem in Milky Way.

But in this case, it wouldn't be just him. All MW races knew Geths are an enemy. All of them would stand against Ryder in this case.

As far as we know, Legion is the only platform that was specifically designed to investigate and talk to organics. Legion is never going to make it to Andromeda. Which means that no one, not even SAM, will initially see the geth as anything but an enemy. SAM does not seem to exhibit preference for other AIs just because they're like him; if anything, he's the one who voices concerns about the unstable ancient AI on Voeld, and tips Ryder off to its dangers. I like the geth, but personally, I'm more interested in developing the symbiont AI storyline in Andromeda (SAM + Pathfinder) than the independent AI. We got to see two different kinds of independent AI back in the OT with Legion and EDI. Variety is the spice of life--and storytelling

I think, SAM is awesome. Reliable and adequate as a companion, interesting and useful as a gameplay element (those notes, when you scan objects, add immersion and are funny, sometimes; also it's good that at least one of us is aware about temperature drops). And I'd like to meet the other SAMs (one per ark, so 4 in total) as well.

Speech structure is mostly formal (full sentence, no imperatives), intonation varies (from very official to sarcastic or empathetic). Though, if I translated it to French, I would use "tu" (singular/less formal "you"), instead of "vous".

Bad thing with the german version is everything is officall and formel. The Tempest crew is not a military one and even this should be not a reason to make the VA so distanced. Even in some romance scene they using 'Sie' (singular for formal). Bioware should implement in the dialogue system a two way feature for other languages. I don't understand why german still using this antique behaviour. SAM should speak with Scott and Sara more personal.

Alright, this going to sound weird, but is SAM a slave? I mean, during the Firefighters quest we're supposed to dislike Knight and her gang for being bigots, but SAM as a sentient intelligence was essentially created to serve the Ryders from birth. He has no choice in the matter and only seems to desire to continue serving and being with Ryder. I suppose he could legitimately want nothing else in his existence but its also likely that he was just programmed to never want to do anything else in the first place which to me seems unethical to do a supposed sentient being. Maybe if he was more EDI or Cortana I wouldn't being having these questions but right now SAM just feels like a tool that the game wants us to believe is sentient when he's really not. I don't think that SAM is a slave, more of a partner. Alec Ryder's initial pitch to the Alliance was that creating a symbiotic AI would avoid the usual creator/creation conflict since they are now intertwined. While most people treat SAM as an extension of Ryder, the reverse is equally true and Ryder is just as much an extension of SAM. Through his connection to both Alec and Ryder, SAM is able to learn more about organics, the world around him and expand his experiences, which furthers his development as his own unique entity. He could conceivably wish to do other things if he wanted to, or possibly even request to bond with someone other than Ryder, but being bonded with a Pathfinder seems best suited to satisfy SAM's curiosity. EDI was another example of an AI who developed a symbiotic relationship with organics, albeit in a different manner. After she was unshackled and became the Normandy, her relationship with the crew changed into a more symbiotic one out of mutual necessity. Even though EDI could easily operate the Normandy by herself, she needed a crew onboard if she wanted to maintain the ship and her own systems. Likewise, while the crew could operate the ship without an AI, it was obvious that EDI was a vital asset when it came to ship defense, scientific analysis and keeping them alive in general. Going back to SAM; He technically has more freedom than organic beings, since we aren't able to cheat death by transferring to another host when our bodies fail us. He's also capable of partition his consciousness to allow him to hold multiple conversations concurrently if he wishes, including with people at SAM Node back on the Hyperion. That he's able to hold independent conversations without Ryder "listening in", shows that SAM isn't forced to rely on Ryder if he wants to interact with the world or other organics. It could also mean that SAM has the capacity to be able to talk behind our back, if he was particularly inclined to. I think the key thing about SAM is that he owes his creation to Alec Ryder's desire save the life of the woman he loved. SAM's formative experiences exposed him to the trials and tribulations of how the Ryder family coped with Ellen's illness and slow decline, Ellen's acceptance of her own mortality, Alec's stubborn refusal to give up trying, and the impact her death had on Scott and Sara. These experiences shaped taught SAM and taught him to understand and empathise with organic beings, which is a major problem that many synthetics seem to struggle with. I think that at the very core of SAM's being is a sense of compassion and a genuine desire to help people. He doesn't help organics or perform menial tasks because he's forced to by his programming, but because SAM is an inherently altruistic being and gains a sense of satisfaction from helping people solve problems. If you accept the Ancient Angaran AI's request to be with SAM, she ends up shackled and installed on the Hyperion, where SAM serves as her caretaker and attempts to curb her more self-destructive tendencies. That he's prepared to oversee her attempted rehabilitation and even acknowledges it might be a futile effort, nonetheless show the amount of compassion that SAM has for other sentient beings.

Definitely. In particular I want to meet the SAM from the turian ark (Macen's, and now Avitus's), and make sure he's doing OK. It sounds like the incomplete transfer from Macen to Avi caused some problems for that SAM, and I'd like to see if they're permanent or not. Also, to tag on to what Sifr was saying, the other SAMs might not have the same depth of experience and capability as Ryder's, but now they've all gone through some form of loss. Avitus's gets a front row seat to his grief over Macen. Sarissa's SAM witnessed the future Pathfinder abandoning the current one; that's gotta be interesting. Raeka and Hayjer's SAM probably went through the least, but it still had to be deactivated to prevent the kett from finding it while they had the salarian ark tethered. So they're all growing alongside their Pathfinders.
