Just watch. When ME5 comes out, everyone will complain about it and hold MEA up as a praiseworthy game that is objectively better. It happens with every Bioware game. ME5? So there will be a sequel to ME3, ME4? I'm ok with that. By ME5 I mean the fifth ME game. ME4 is MEA. |

people whined about the ME3 endings for 5 years. they'll continue to whine about andromeda until they find something else to whine about MEA was a meh game with a meh story. But it's still leaps and bounds better than ME3. I just think MEA would have been a better game without "Mass Effect" in the title. THe start of a new franchise rather than continuing an old, badly damaged one. |

Similarly, we're all calling DA4 DA4 until we have something else to call it. Someone had done a fan trailer for DA4 on YouTube and labeled it "Dragon Age Reckoning"...which I think would be an excellent title. But that's a subject for another forum.

Fans opinions about BW games are not some monolithic hive mind that does some whiplash "whining" for the hell of it. You have different people that like different things about the various games. And at least with DA games, each one is so different from the others. For example, some prefer a more blank set character, and some prefer a more fixed character.
I think there is more appreciation of the strengths in previous games, but mostly it is different people complaining about a feature/s they liked in a previous game that has been axed in some way. They take turns. When people don't like something they tend to be more vocal about it than the ones that do like something.

I don't think it is people changing their minds and being inconsistent but rather simply different people liking and speaking out about different things. I have always liked ME2 and 99% of ME3 but will always remain disappointed by the ending. I liked DA2, especially the DLC and the characters, but found a lot of problems with the last chapter being nonsensical and the reused environments and sheer amount of bugs with the skills was somewhat embarrassing. ME1 didn't have very good gameplay but still told a good story so I enjoyed it for 1 playthrough. I very rarely like open world games so DAI and MEA were not really targeted at me but I enjoyed them to some extent. My position on these games has never really changed much at all. I will never be praising MEA's open worlds although I am completely sure that people who did enjoy them will be lamenting the fact that they are gone (if the next ME doesn't have them). If you had more "open world" in the sense of Habitat 7 - where it woukd funnel you towards a specific direction but allowed choiced exploration - and had Nomad side missions like the Asteroid, I think you'd have a good balance. I thought Habitat 7 allowed for some great use of the jet pack and combat while still keeping the narrative mission-focused. I think it started to lose its focus on the Nexus/Eos missions where the journal points and exploration were all over the place and spread out. I think if you have a bunch of Habitat 7-like planet missions, along with the provided companion/main missions, that would have been a much tighter narrative/game. Additionally, you could scan planets for anomalies that would lead to Nomad missions on the planets surface with each mission having something unique to provide. Finally, when mission is complete, you could opening explore whatever you wanted post game but it wouldn't be essential. Agree 100%. The first mission was the most enjoyable in the game simply for the perfect urgency/exploration balance.
Open world is vastly overrated. Just because it lets you sink more hours into the game doesn't mean they're hours well spent.
