I'll go ahead and bring up the other tangential issue with dropping the pause and aim/power wheel, which is that ME:A will not be playable for some fans with certain disabilities, of which I know there were some just on BSN Prime. Not sure why they feel the need to ditch the pause/wheel instead of letting people play at their own pace. It won't be an issue for me personally (though I used to be garbage at shooting when I started playing ME and needed pause all the time for aim), but for some this will really lower their enjoyment for no apparent gain anywhere else. This is really a bummer, and an issue few ever consider. I've mentioned it several times, and I'm glad I'm not the only one that's thinking about it. I expect I'll be relatively unaffected by the changes in MEA, but I am curious to see (in a not too eager way) how my fingers hold up in the "gaming years" to come. I have a condition that allows my joints to easily subluxate and dislocate. Obviously, this is not pleasant, and can cause lots of issues. (And that's just the obvious stuff my illness does. Ugh.) Chronic illness, disability and pain teaches one a great deal of empathy, awareness and patience.

I've been expecting a reduction in the number of powers since they mentioned they were going to individual cooldowns. Its a logical consequence if they want to avoid too big "alpha strike" and not shift the emphasis too heavily to powers. The alternative would be to have very long cooldowns, but that has its own problems/ Hopefully they'll at least not make ammo powers and suchlike take up slots. TBH I'm not a big fan of individual cooldowns anyway. Why can you fire off pull + throw in rapid succession as a biotic, but not throw + throw? Given a choice between more powers on a global cooldown vs fewer powers on individual cooldowns, I'd take more powers any day. I'm hoping that the back/select button will have a similar function to that in DAI.

I am calling it now:
"BioWare destroys the freedom of character creation in ME:A and take away the LITTLE freedom we had in ME 1-3, just to make it equal to the multiplayer combat gameplay."
EA does not care one bit for the singleplayer - BECAUSE THERE ARE NO MICROTRANSACTIONS!
I swear , I am gonna "§%$%/$/&)§$%§%$&7 aaaarrrr ... hhhergpoj ...

I would have been completely fine - for the combat in ME:A - if they would have given the player 8 skill slots, like in Inquisition. Which, to be honest, I was totally counting on when they reduced the it to that number in DA:I.
But now ... I am LOST. I really would never have expected it to go as low as THREE ...
I mean, I have no clue! Maybe this is work in progress?!?!? But I would bet a 1000 Euros on it that they wanted to favor the multiplayer over the singleplayer. Or rather, that EA does not care about anything but multiplayer.
To me that destroys every respect a company can have and show in regards to RPG culture. It will play like "God Of War" ...

Sure I was expecting something along DAs 6-8 but in hindsight it was a silly expectation and in no way indicates a favortism to MP.

In DA O you could have different abilities tied to what weapon you would be using. So, in this case, you might want Biotic Charge for a shotgun or Adrenaline Rush for a Sniper Rifle. I doubt this will happen but could be nice.

You really could not be MORE WRONG ... Seriously!
For example in ME3, you had always had 6 active powers at any given time. Why on earth would they reduce that if it works fine and there are even people who cried out for more freedom - LIKE IN ANY RPG !?!? ... which is even the reason why they opened up the class system ?!?!?!
Your thinking makes no sense to me from ANY angle
Everyone who does not like to use more than 1 or 2 powers ... DOES NOT HAVE TO DO SO - NOT EVER! But the people who like to have freedom and choice - IN A FREAKING RPG - DO WANT THAT
Does that make sense to you? Or am I being unreasonable, in your point of view ...

Fair enough, though for a lot of people it didn't work like that. One way or another, I hope they'll confirm how the system works soon.

@ The Elder King Yes, Gears is the better example. You get what I mean anyway ... But thanks. What good is freedom of choice without the class restrictions - IF I CANNOT MAKE FREAKIN' USE OF IT IN COMBAT ??? ...

When could you have six active powers at one time? Oh wait did you play on computer with a KB &M? For definition sake I consider an 'active power' one that has been mapped to a hotkey. Now, I would hope/ assume that BioWare does not repeat the same mistake with ME A as they did with DA I and allow more abilities to be hotkeyed for PC users who want it but since I play on PS4 that is not an issue for me.
Regardless though, it all depends on implementation. When DA I removed the ability to have your abilities activated through the combat wheel I was not exactly happy with the descision, especially later on, but I still enjoyed the combat system and didn't really feel like, except a rare few instances in my 5 playthroughs of the game, that I had to sacrifice a good power that I liked for a better one.

It'll definitely be limited, if it is, to three on all platforms, since they're going to balance the game for having the same number of abilities available.

On console you had the radial menu for the ME trilogy. There you just opened it up, aimed at your target and released the power. Just like in DA:O for example ... If you are content with THREE mapped powers WITHOUT having the ability to use the other eight ... Well, wait until release and ask yourself if the game is poorer for it! Yo uwill change your mind soon enough, I believe! I loved to play as Vanghuard, Sentinel, Engineer and Adept. Sometimes Infiltrator. Not a single playthrough as Soldier! If you reduce all classes to Soldiers ... IT IS NOT MASS EFFECT ANY LONGER!!! Wouldn't you agree ?!?

Again, I skipped over two or three powers per class that I did use for the other classes that I hardly ever used because they were wastes of space. Believe it or not I actualy had a much harder time mapping the appropriate abilities to my soldiers hot keys in a satisfactory warning then any of the other classes.

I've had a thought to about how they can give you access to more powers. In DA O you could have different abilities tied to what weapon you would be using. So, in this case, you might want Biotic Charge for a shotgun or Adrenaline Rush for a Sniper Rifle. I doubt this will happen but could be nice. I would not like that. That's way too much limitation on how you can play your character. I still don't like the way they did that in Dragon Age after Origins. Though mentioning Charge, I'm really worried about a vanguard-style character if this restriction turns out to be true. Vanguard was easily my favorite trilogy class, and you can bet I'll be charging all over ME:A. But if you have a character with Charge and Nova, which already go together so closely, that only leaves you with one additional power slot. And that's really disappointing. How boring will it be to have a character with just a charge combo and one other ability and no opportunity for more variety? Even with Nova-guard I liked to mix things up with some Pulls and Energy Drains, and I wouldn't even have the slots for that. With the classless character building they're talking about, it's even worse. So many options for interesting combinations... except you'd only have 3 power slots. It's like putting a kid in a toy store, but only letting them explore a couple of aisles. So I'm really hoping this is not the case. Please let us explore the whole toy store BioWare. EDIT: Could someone ask about this for clarification on Twitter? They might actually tell us if there is a limit now that they've shown the gameplay trailer.

Sadly this is one of the things I'm not very optimistic about. Like op said, Bioware seems to be streamlining their games a lot, which personally I don't like, but eh, it is what it is. I do hope for a bit more than just 3 powers though... that sounds awfully restricting. If it's like DAI (was it 8?) it's ok. At least not a downgrade lol. Keep h(y/o)pe alive!!!

On the topic: There's still hope. *facepalm* I don't really care if they want to release information gradually, but when it comes to valid gameplay concerns, the least they can do is to explain the facts from footage that they have shown... I guess it might be because they're still finalizing how it works.

Now you have complete freedom of choice - BUT YOU CANNOT MAP SHIT! And what class you or I like is completely unimportant in any regard. If you did not like the powers in the other classes than Soldier - fine. Great that you like Soldier BUT WHY ON EARTH ARE OTHER PEOPLES PREFERENCES OBSOLETE ... ... JUST BECAUSE YOU NEVER USED THE POWERS OTHER PEOPLE USED ???
Again ... Your reasoning does not make any sense to me - AT ALL.

I guess it might be because they're still finalizing how it works. Maybe, but the UI didn't seem to be "under construction", looked rather close to a final build to me. I mostly agree, but the mapping of powers is weird for a controller. The triggers are usually better for shooting, not using powers. I don't see why they wouldn't just say no if they're not working on it in some way. It's way better to tell this sooner then later.

Oh yeah, they said the squadmate icons aren't finalized as well. Anyway it's something we'll know probably next year. Hopefully with a good news rather then a bad one.

I guess it might be because they're still finalizing how it works. Maybe, but the UI didn't seem to be "under construction", looked rather close to a final build to me. That is exactly what I am thinking, too. Also, they are talking about not making things public, which they are not confident about and such ... ... which means they are confident about what they show here! I wonder if they have absolutely no concers about loosing customers? I mean, I switched from PC to consoles years ago. But all these past BioWare titles, make me think of switching back and play C-RPG's again. I cannot take this shit!

I mostly agree, but the mapping of powers is weird for a controller. The triggers are usually better for shooting, not using powers. I don't see why they wouldn't just say no if they're not working on it in some way. It's way better to tell this sooner then later. Personally I play on PC, so this is an even larger concern. The inability to map powers is a hallmark of shitty console ports. I don't think this it because of console ports though. Both DA and ME, before DAI, always had the option to use all the powers you unlocked through the pause wheel. There was no limitation. Both DAI and MEA still have the wheel, so if they wanted they could easily put the powers there to match the Hotkeys on PC. As I said for DAI, if they went for limiting the powers to the mappable ones, it's more likely for unifying the SP and MP gameplay then console ports.
