Since I first heard about a new Mass Effect title being made, I was planning on making a pure sniper build (in the trilogy I was a crowd-control CQC Engineer), but I actually might try my hand with some interesting amalgamations. I haven't been following all the information closely enough, so I may have missed it, but how many passives can Ryder choose to equip? Also, I wanted to quote you PillarBiter, because, outside of enjoying your brainstorming, I wanted to tell you that I enjoy your choice of avatar. The Universalist was pretty much tied for my character choice in Kingdoms of Amalur. I actually ended up with a maul/chakram/talisman, heavy armored battlemage using the Sorcerer destiny, but I nearly was a heavy armored, faeblade/dagger/talisman, 3-element Universalist. Good times. Universalist life, bruh! Glad someone enjoys the builds! I've been amending my builds ever so slightly to the point of perfection. I think 've arrived (for me personally, anyway) Most tactics of my original post remain intact. Profile 1 (main): ExplorerOverload, concussive shot, novaI've changed charge for concussive shot because it now allows you to be versatile at all ranges. Also, having a build with a combat, tech and biotic ability seems awesome if it works. Gret combo potential, great short to mid to long range skills. good synergy with the profile. And blink. let's not forget that one. Profile 2: VanguardLance, annihilation field, chargeSpec lance for using barrier instead of cooldown, prime enemies with annihilation, switch between lance and charge/heavy melee to deplete and refill shields at will, basically making you a walking biotic explosion. Profile 3: infiltrator.turbocharge, infiltrator cloak, cryo beamunchanged from before. used for taking down heavy armor and supplying fire support. Profile 4: soldieromni grenade, trip mine, barrierI switched omni grenade with flak cannon because omni probably either detonates or primes enemies --> extra win. Besidesm flak is bad against armor... Other profiles if people want, but not really my playstyle: Engineer remnant VI, assault turret, invasion running interference with helper friends Adept Singularity, throw, shockwave Boom. sentinel backlash, energy drain, incinerate Unkillable tank and tech combos Well, it looks like you are thoroughly prepared to take on whatever the Andromeda Galaxy has to throw at you! I am going to approach the combat by ignoring profile swapping (I'll play an Infiltrator on an alternate gender run), and run an Explorer tailored to what sounds most fun to me right now: Tactical Cloak, Invasion, and Nova with Combat and Biotic passives
I plan to focus on melee with a hammer primarily, but also use a SMG where needed. I may swap out Nova for Singularity to get a primer in play, but we'll see how things work out. I will have Biotic Blink for dodging, Tactical Cloak for sneaking, and Invasion can help soften my opponents for hammer strikes.

I just reread some of the posts...was Nova confirmed to be a primer? I have seen a number of posters suggest it, but I didn't want to get my hopes up yet. I haven't seen any official information on that ability yet, outside of possible confirmation that the animation is the one that looks like a fist-to-ground slam. Was it in one of the videos? I admit, I skipped around and didn't watch any of them all the way through. If so, I am super happy to be able to keep my planned build.

While I previously mentioned I would forgo my sniper for the Explorer, I think I am going to go ahead and swap my canon and alternate sets. I tried to fit the sniper into a variation of my Explorer concept, but I didn't like the arrangement. So, I am going to run an Infiltrator profile: Trip Mine, Invasion, and Tactical Cloak
The build will focus on supporting the sniper approach with crowd control and team support. On the alternate, I will use the Explorer profile: Omni Grenade, Remnant VI, and Nova
This mish-mash will be strengthened by its passives, and will melee with drone support. I look forward to running both of these characters soon. Now I just need some more details (like a full description of the Infiltrator profile, and some squad loadouts) to feel settled. Do we get to choose from a list for the squad members or do they come preloaded with specific skills and passives?

Hasn't been confirmed per say, but it has been shown to be a primer and not a detonator in some footage. Obviously these things are potentially subject to change prior to release so we won't know 100% until the 16th.

Obviously these things are potentially subject to change prior to release so we won't know 100% until the 16th. When a skill has a round sigil in the top left of it, it is a primer. Many videos already show nova having this top left sigil. In one video, you can see the evolution tree of nova. There, the final evolution (6 points) shows it to let you be able to choose to either - let you make it a primer - something else (probably allows you to let it use shields instead of a cooldown, but don't quote me on that) While none of the videos are final and 100% sure, it is highly likely.

Hope they work out for you Infiltrator has been shown in quite a couple videos. It gives extra weapon accuracy, stability, tech cooldown and weak zone weapon damage. Also, it'll incorporate some form of seeing enemies through walls. Squads have 3 active and 2 passive skills, I believe.

This used to be the case in ME3 of course, but I haven't seen it in ME:A for particular skills. You can see it in passives, though, like level 3 and 5 of Offensive Biotics. Right. Seen here: Boom. I knew I saw something about upgraded primers/detonators.

I haven't been following all the information closely enough, so I may have missed it, but how many passives can Ryder choose to equip? I don't think anyone has answered this for you yet... Passive skills don't need to be equipped. Once you put points into them they always apply, no matter which profile you use. e.g. if you invest in the barrier passive in the biotics tree then this will still give you a shield bonus if you are playing with an infiltrator profile using only tech active skills. On the other hand, passive bonuses granted by unlocking/levelling up a profile only apply while you are using that profile. I think some of the passive skills look pretty amazing, like the weapon passives for combat and the team support passive for tech. Given that we can only load a limited number of active skills into our favourite profiles I'm planning to put plenty of points into passives.

I seem to be vacillating quite a bit back and forth. May internet-dom be aware that I will reserve the right to be indecisive, and possibly revert to my first proposed scenario.
Outside of trying to pinpoint my perfect, cross-referenced, long-term plan, I think the main reason I am having difficulty settling is that I am worried about the squad makeup not aligning. I am certain I want Jaal on the squad, but it looks like he is a sniper, which would make it tough to pair with Ryder as the same. Jaal could also be without biotics, and would potentially completely remove that tool from the team loadout. I also was an Engineer for the trilogy, so it might be time to try out biotics.
Ah, decisions, decisions. Thanks for all the information that has been shared in general, and to my specific queries.

You'll be able to respec, so my suggestion would be to just go with what you're most interested in initially. Once you meet Jaal you can check out what powers he has. If they don't fit with your current spec then you can decide whether to respec or go with different squadmates.

I won't deny that I am still a little sore over losing the power wheel, and having access to a bit larger pool of abilities. But what I do find exciting and somewhat fascinating is how different everyone's Ryder could end up becoming. Barring those players that "min/max" specifically, a lot of people are going to experience their adventure with drastically different loadouts. As an official Bioware team member, would you be able to share whether any of the Biotic passives, say Containment, might have an evolution that would create a percentage chance to produce a stasis field when using duration-based biotics like Singularity or Annihilation?

She will either use the Sentinel Profile or the Explorer Profile. If one of the biotic passives produces a stasis field or some other minor biotic, then I will use Sentinel, if not, then Explorer! With Infiltrator or Explorer being used for the alternate. I had considered using the Vanguard Profile, but I would have to give up one of the Tech abilities for my pair of characters. I would go Explorer for my alt, and could only fit two actives. I absolutely love Invasion, need to have Tactical Cloak, and also love summons! I suppose I could drop the construct active since my canon Shepard was an Engineer with multiple drone powers.

I'm one of those people who's use incinerate on shields and overload on everything. You know, like the IGN dude, except that I don't suck ass. Granted, a properly specc'd overload works on everything since it's how I rapidly kill everything in multiplayer, but I tend to use powers when I feel like it and not always because they're most effective on enemies, especially since Mass Effect isn't the type of game where using the wrong power ends up healing all of the jackasses you're currently fighting.

Soldier with shockwave, invasion and annihilation field! ohhooh! vanguard with assault turret, remnant VI and barricade! Wait a minute... these both actually seem pretty playable... WHAT HAVE U DOEN BIOWER! You've created a game where no matter your build, you'll still be able to make it work! I feel like applause is appropriate here: *initiates slow clap*

Explorer with all passives, there, I win. That's basically the game Vanquish. That's probably the most overpowered build of all! You win NOTHING! Good. DAY! Sir.

Explorer with all passives, there, I win. Lol. Maybe this challenge needs some rules... In the spirit of the game I think the only 'rule' that makes sense is to come up with the weakest build for a particular play style. And generally speaking since I hate short range characters, well maybe hate is a strong word since I did run as a vanguard for a while, but since I prefer...greatly...characters at mid to long range...the worse build for me will probably be a soldier build with Charge/ Nova (specced to fully deplete shields) and either lance which fully deplets shields or...I think that may actually be it...with a sword.
