It is still possible for the book to be a prequel and for it to make sense that it came out after the game like, say, if there were a twist that was revealed in the game and in the book, said twist is a part of the plot.
To put it differently: in the game, the twist is, well, a twist and we see it as it is and deal with it. In the book, we see how the twist came to be like the thoughts and actions of the characters that helped make it.

Is there any news about first ME:A book release date? March 2017 is what a document has it as. I recommend you check over in the Big book update! thread since it has the document in the opening post and a transcript of said document in the comments.

The original announcement of the prequel novel has been very appetizing to me. I'm pre-salivating over it, actually, and my dog is licking up all of my drooling. (Gross!) My first reaction, at hearing that Jemison's prequel book may now be the third novel installment and published after the game's release, is that this is one more unforced error and the loss of a golden opportunity for BW to create Mass Hysteria over Andromeda. Such a move doesn't create suspenseful anticipation - it creates a source for backlash which BW/EA certainly don't need to unwittingly foster again. My second thought draws from the Halo prequel game Halo: Reach - a game that shows the events immediately preceding the first game Halo: Combat Evolved. A very nice game indeed, and it doesn't have the primary Halo story characters. The player joins a healthy squad of super-warriors no one had seen before. So I'm not ready to discount the value of a prequel novel that arrives after Andromeda's release. But N7 day this year had better be a good one. However, if BW creates more self-inflicted wounds this time around.... Well, then the once great city (and franchise) will have fallen under it's own corporate management weight and marketing mismanagement (which is what I suspect is already happening), and I don't want to see that occur. May the countdown continue uninterrupted - and surprise the heck out of most of us (esp for the Nattering Nabobs of Negativity) on N7, 2016.

Actually, I'm not convinced it will be a prequel now. Good point. Conversation might have gone like this: NKJ: Sorry, can't do it this year. Best I can do is Fall next year. Bioware: (thinks) Ugh! But hell, she's got a Hugo now. Glad we signed her up before she got to be more than we can afford. Says: Well, in that case, how about instead of making it a prequel, we make it be something else? Like, a love story? NKJ: Are you shitting me? Um ... well, we can certainly explore a few new ideas. Doesn't have to be a prequel, if the timing doesn't work for you. Bioware: Yeah, yeah! Or maybe, you know, aliens where the right ear is green and the other is purple, but for 49% of them the left ear is green and the other is purple! Really get into the social issues with that one! NKJ: ...internal eye roll ... You mean, like the classic Star Trek episode, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"? Bioware: What? No. Were their ears purple?

,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸-(_MEA_)-,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸ Jemisin's prequel book coming out after the game is a bummer. I was looking forward to Bio's explanation for some, eh.. "irregularities" concerning intergalactic travel tech to see if my theories have any solidity. The fact is, we left and we arrived centuries later. The game starts, and I'll be ready to play without worrying about how we got there. Frankly, the game has to stand on its own.
Normally, these books have little to do with the actual game events. As a prequel novel, it may deal with how the ARKCON project got started and who the major players are. Throw in some race politics, colonisation goals, training criteria and mission support requirements. The Ryders will not feature in a prominent way, imo.
On a side note. I wonder if Flynn and co. will explain the book delay
Actually, I'm not convinced it will be a prequel now. ,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸-(_MEA_)-,.-~*´¨¯¨`*·~-.¸ Sigh.. I really, really don't want to agree with you, even if it makes sense. Call me indoctrinated. ..
But, I think you're right. What's the point of writing a prequel after the fact? What's the new calculated marketing sales numbers? Are they plausible and sufficient?
On the other hand, a writer needs time to write a new story. It would not surprise me if Bio+Jemisin got together in 2015 for this project and a November 2016 book launch catches all by surprise.

Unless they put a twist regarding the Rymother or someone else we already like during the game. They put a cliffhanger in the game, and the Jemisin's book explore that in the prequel, the origins of that character decision before the trip to Andromeda. But yea, I was so interested in the prequel before playing the first game... a real bummer

I just finished The Fifth Season. I think N.K. Jemisin was cheated at the Hugos. She should have won all of them.
The style of TFS reminded me a lot of Gene Wolfe or Jack Vance. Easily in my top 5 for the decade, and that's saying something, since this decade has seen some great work by James S. A. Corey, Kim Stanley Robinson, Ann Leckie, Charles Stross, and GRRM.

It's good to have now read firsthand praise for each of these authors. I know they are all accomplished, but it carries more weight, somehow, when you hear it from people with whom you have some familiarity. I look forward to reading their Mass Effect productions.
I certainly hope Ms. Jemisin's novel remains a prequel story. The fact that it couldn't be released first in no way diminishes the importance of the stories to be told in that timeframe. I still feel like the background that leads to the development of the Andromeda Initiative; the selection of its personnel; the development of its key technologies; and so on are all very interesting and important stories. I'd been speculating that the N7 on the cover of "Andromeda Initiative" was Ryder's father long before the idea gained any traction online, and it now seems more likely than not to be true. The Ryder backstory is likely a story worth reading, regardless of a few extra months' wait.
Also, I'm inclined to believe that the delay is an issue of availability and deadlines with Ms. Jemisin, rather than the entire prequel plot of "Andromeda Initiative" being scrapped. Are the other novels even delayed, or are they basically being released precisely when they were originally intended? I suspect it is only Ms. Jemisin's novel that was delayed. The subsequent two are arriving on time, I believe, and the first release has been reshuffled to become third.

I tend to prefer Nebula winners to Hugos, not sure why -- maybe because the Hugo vote can be manipulated. We'll have to see.

Out of the 3 Hugo nominees I've read (TFS, Uprooted and Ancillary Mercy), I definitely thought the Fifth Season was the best.

I love you Karpyshyn, but let's be honest here - the Mass Effect novels until now haven't been anything spectacular. They are pretty inaccessible to anyone who isn't already a fan of the series, the plots are predictable and the writing style extremely basic, all are thematically barren.
The authors that have been lined up for these books however are extremely impressive. I'm a big reader, so for Mass Effect to get potentially some novels which could be only half as good as The Witcher books is a big step in the right direction. The release of these books is a bit of a disappointment. I can't help but think if they were being released in the run up to the game hitting stores it would increase their sales a bit more and generate hype the right way, but you can't have it all I guess.

Personally I would have preferred it if these books had come out already, that way we could have read up on the back story so we were up-to-date by the time the game comes our next year, should these books come out at the same time as the game, I'm not sure I would even read them at all...

I really can't wait for them to be released.. That would help sate my Andromeda hunger. Well.. at least for a little while. It'll be an instant purchase as soon as they're released, that's for sure.

Just a little disclaimer: im gonna be really harsh on those books, but that's just my opinion.
I have no hopes for anything other than videogames. All those books-comics-cartoons persistenly maintaining a low quality compared to games.
Those 4 upcoming books will be - at best - on that same level. And it didn't really gives me that much of a hope when i see the names of a good authors attached to them. You know, William Dietz is actually one of the best Star Wars author and back then i had really good expectations. Who knew that such a talented author will going to spit such monstrocity as "Deception"?

It could be that "Deception" was a technically well written novel. Maybe someone with absolutely no familiarity with Mass Effect could've found the novel palatable.
One needs to know the material, though, before he or she attempts to write a novel; and he clearly had no familiarity with Mass Effect. I never made it past the freighter with the Tantalus Drive Core, so I missed out on a lot of the other more infamous stuff like the "straight gay man", the "cured autistic girl" and the "cereal killer".

To expensive to my tastes. Going to go Jack Sparrow on the digital version, really dick move to not include it with the deluxe version of the game (like ME3).
