To expensive to my tastes. Going to go Jack Sparrow on the digital version, really dick move to not include it with the deluxe version of the game (like ME3). LOLYeah I agree, I was hoping they included it like in ME2 and ME3 Collectors Ed.

But this is much bigger than the small art books that came with the games. This is like 'The Art of the Mass Effect universe', which is very big.

Looks like the first book will be out almost at the same time as MEA itself. "Nexus uprising", huh? Garson ruffling some feathers with her "volunteers" or some "brave explorers" being a power hungry jerks? Or both? Will we have to sort their mess?

We need a thread for the novels. If I missed past threads, just let me know and I'll merge them in EDIT: aha, the 'Big Book thread' was doing occasional discussion: merged. EDIT: And there's more, mega-thread coming up: merged titanbooks.com/blog/announcing-official-mass-effect-novels/
TITAN BOOKS AND BIOWARE TO PUBLISH ORIGINAL NEW MASS EFFECT™ FICTION NOVELS SET IN THE UNIVERSE OF ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2017. Titan Books will work closely with acclaimed video game developer BioWare to publish three brand new novels set in the universe of MASS EFFECT™: ANDROMEDA. The action will weave directly into the new game, chronicling storylines developed in close collaboration with the BioWare game team. The action takes place concurrently with the adventure of the game itself, setting up the story and events of the game adding depth and detail to the canonical MASS EFFECT saga. Starting with MASS EFFECT™: NEXUS UPRISING by Jason M. Hough and K.C. Alexander on 28th March 2017, with two further novels due for summer and fall of 2017, the stories will offer fans of the blockbuster game further insights into the worlds and characters of MASS EFFECT. The full line -up of titles is currently slated as: MASS EFFECT™: NEXUS UPRISING by Jason M. Hough and K.C. Alexander 9781785651564 | Spring 2017 | Paperback & eBook | £7.99/$7.99 | 336pp MASS EFFECT™: ANNIHILATION by Catherine M. Valente 9781785651588 | Summer 2017 | Paperback & eBook | £7.99/$7.99 | 336pp MASS EFFECT™: INITIATION by N.K. Jemisin 9781785651601 | Fall 2017 | Paperback & eBook | £7.99/$7.99 | 336pp Details on the novel storylines can't yet be disclosed because they are so tightly tied to the MASS EFFECT™: ANDROMEDA game adventure. The Novels and the Game MASS EFFECT™: ANDROMEDA take players to the Andromeda galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, players will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory where WE are the aliens.

Bioware: Yeah, yeah! Or maybe, you know, aliens where the right ear is green and the other is purple, but for 49% of them the left ear is green and the other is purple! Really get into the social issues with that one! NKJ: ...internal eye roll ... You mean, like the classic Star Trek episode, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"? Bioware: What? No. Were their ears purple? It actually sounds like a mix between the classic TOS episode and a B5 episode where Ivanova has to deal with the fighting Drazi.

Hm... thanks, but after the atrocity that was the ME3 prequel novel, I stopped reading those things. If you mean Mass Effect Deception it's not surprising you stopped reading the novels. There weren't any more! I was really annoyed with Deception too but I felt the previous three books really helped bring the game more alive. Giving hidden meaning to some of the characters and events in the game through the additional background in the books. The comics too, of course. I expect the new books to do the same so I'm looking forward to them.

Hm... thanks, but after the atrocity that was the ME3 prequel novel, I stopped reading those things. I was going to point out that Deception was the last novel, and that we all stopped reading after that one, but Thrombin beat me to it. As he said, the rest of the novels had been pretty good reading. They supplemented the games' stories well, without retreading or becoming mandatory reading. Dietz simply had no familiarity with Mass Effect. He pulled terms out of a Mass Effect glossary and wrote a book. I never made it past the freighter with a Tantalus Drive Core, as I mentioned previously. Dietz's poor outing in no way indicates that the next batch of writers will fare poorly. In fact, based upon their acclaim and accolades prior to these novels, not to mention the fact that they all claim to be ME fans, I think the novels are in good hands. Karpyshyn did really well with his novels, but these writers are serious novelists. They should kick butt with these stories.

I assume everyone already saw that? A trilogy of Mass Effect: Andromeda novels is coming next yearThe fourth novel planned for the Douglas Adams-style trilogy, intended to be written by Mass Effect creative director Mac Walters, is off the table for now, although it could still be released at some point down the road. It sounds like he has his hands full, to be honest.

If Mac's book is still planned as a tie-in for a movie, we're in for a looong wait. The article kinda gives the vibe that this could change, though.

I guess when Ryder assumes the mantle of Pathfinder, the Nexus Uprising is ended with known casualty Kelly Sloane booted out. I believe there was minimal damage to the Nexus. It is, after all, a space station. Serious damage to the station that can cause atmospheric venting is a bad idea. So, what could the story of the Nexus Uprising be about, if the due pub date is March 28, 2017? We have heard nothing about it so there is the possibility of significant tie-in with the game. Is the story about the founder, dad Ryder or just the events that occurred on arrival to the cluster? Is the human antagonist responsible for the uprising? Is he the fifth column from the Elusive Man? I guess the main question is should I even care about the book in the sense that it may influence my game decisions?

That's one concern I have. The game gives some vague explanation about the how/why/who about going to Andromeda only to find out to get the full details, the player has to purchase a book/comic/whatever.

I'm still hoping that those novels won't be necessary to understand events and characters in the game. Unlike in DA:I that is. Indeed. I like that books give you a deeper backstory of some game events, but they should either not be relevant to understand the game (like ME's first novel tells you how Saren found Sovereign, but this isn't important for what goes on in the game) or the game should explain the context for those who don't read the novels better than DA:I did with the Orlesian Civil War.

I'm still hoping that those novels won't be necessary to understand events and characters in the game. Unlike in DA:I that is. Same here. The fact that former lead writer for Halo 4 was in charge of the narrative up until relatively recently has me slightly concerned. If you didn't read the Forerunner trilogy of novels, or watch the tie-in film, or brush up on all the comic books prior to playing the fourth Halo game you had absolutely no idea what was going on. Who is this Didect character? What's his deal with humanity? What the hell is The Mantel? Who is this officer Lanskey, and why is he suddenly buddy buddy with the Master Chief?, etc. And what really made that whole situation even more insulting was 343's response to (rightful) criticism of the writing: "If you read the tie-in material it would explain everything." practically insinuating that one was not a 'true' Halo fan unless they devoured every form of media that setting happened to be released on. I really don't want to see that happen for ME:A.

I really don't want to see that happen for ME:A. Chris Schlerf has been gone a long time, now, and mishandling tie-in novels hasn't been the Mass Effect modus operandi, to date. ( Deception was just assigned to the wrong guy entirely, not mishandled in this fashion.) I imagine they heard the complaints regarding The Masked Empire pretty clearly. I'm not too fearful of this being an issue. If I end up being wrong, everyone will remember that I was the trusting fool who believed they'd get this right.

What were the complaints about The Masked Empire? The complaints weren't with the novel itself. The complaints were with DAI. The "Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts" arc was poorly introduced and little exposition was provided for the players. Many felt that they didn't truly understand the dynamics of the struggle between Celene, Gaspard and Briala. Those who had read The Masked Empire knew the characters and situation very well, of course. The disparity almost made TME seem like required reading. While readers certainly appreciate a well written supplement to the IP, no one wants "required reading" becoming an issue with future games.

I really enjoyed that mission and felt I understood what was going on fine. This is the first time I'm hearing there was a book about it!

I am interested in your opinion in this line for the collector's edition of the strategy guide for Mass Effect: Andromeda. "Bonus Content: Only available in the Collector’s Edition." SourceTo me it is just extra content in the guide, but a friend of mine is thinking it means there will be bonus content in Andromeda like there was with Inquisition.
