Am I missing something? Why on earth is the Mass Effect: Andromeda prequel book being released after the game is already out? "Starting with MASS EFFECT™: NEXUS UPRISING by Jason M. Hough and K.C. Alexander on 28th March 2017, with two further novels due for summer and fall of 2017, the stories will offer fans of the blockbuster game further insights into the worlds and characters of MASS EFFECT" titanbooks.com/blog/announcing-official-mass-effect-novels/

I suppose it's because the book may spoil something that you are supposed to discover by playing the game. Or maybe they just didn't have it ready in time.

Good, this gives me hope that it is not required reading & it won't be bugging me throughout the game, some nice little filler for after my first playthrough.
Just my opinion.

Hmmmm never thought of the spoiler point as it was being billed as a 'Prequel'. I do think it's a shame that they couldn't have got a proper prequel out before the game with no spoilers to the game. Even if it was just a way of building excitement for the fans.

They just don't want the Cerberus haters to know they are behind the entire project until after they purchase the game.

I am fully signed up to the Cerberus being the shadowy backers of the AI and I must admit I love the idea as it could lead to such a good 'undercurrent' behind the story.

I suppose it's because the book may spoil something that you are supposed to discover by playing the game. Or maybe they just didn't have it ready in time. Considering that the book will talk about the Andromeda Initiative this is most likely true. Good, this gives me hope that it is not required reading & it won't be bugging me throughout the game, some nice little filler for after my first playthrough. Just my opinion. None of the books and comics are required to understand the games but they did help expand the universe and give some better insight in a few matters (like the way quarians live in the Migrant Fleet or how Liara came to hunt the Shadow Broker).

The book seems to focus on what happens to the Nexus after it arrives in Andromeda, before the Hyperion arrives in the galaxy. I think finding out what happened to the Nexus will be a big part of at least the early portion of MEA, so having it spoiled by promotional material would be disappointing. But I do feel your pain. If Nexus Uprising came out before MEA, I'd read it immediately

Have to disagree. You don't really need to read the books to understand what is happening in DAI.

Have to disagree. You don't really need to read the books to understand what is happening in DAI. That is very true. I have a copy of Dragon Age: The Masked Empire and I still haven't gotten around to reading it and I understood what was going on during The Winter Palace quest. I would say some of the Mass Effect comic book mini-series, most notably Redemption and Invasion, would probably come closer to "required reading" than any of the novels.

Agreed, since EA Access gives you 10hrs of play ahead of launch date.
Besides, fans will either read the book or play the game but not both simultaneously. Eager fans will play the game first, regardless if the book came out a few days earlier. All the hype around here is for the game, not the book.

Hello everyone,
This is my first thread on the forum, so please, bear with me. All pleasantries aside I'd like to know what you all would think about BioWare contracting or petitioning potential authors to write more novels about canon events from the ME universe? I've read all there is to read in terms of novels/comics related to ME (enjoyed Karpyshyn's work, didn't care for Dietz) and find myself wanting more. I would love to see books about The Morning/Geth War and the Rachni Wars/Krogan Rebellions etc. Hell, my #1 and #2 plot lines would be the Prothean's war with the Reapers as well as a story based around humanity's discovery of the Prothean Observation Post on Mars and the resulting discovery of Pluto's mass relay. What canon history from the series would you all like to see brought to the page and who would you like to see BioWare approach to get it done? I do hope this starts a decent conversation.

Anyone but external writers. I found a hilarious interview from Mac once where he was asked if he was concerned about Deception being the first non-BioWare novel and he said he and Casey had to read it through and check it wasn't inconsistent so he thought it was safe. About that... As far as I've gathered the announced work is done by writers not from BioWare so I'm really skeptical. At first they said Mac was going to do one of these 4 novels and I'd honestly have liked to have read that just to see some raw Mac Walters and get a sense of what he can do for good and because I'm an untrustful, sinister bastard. Otherwise I'd like to see any of the other staff members on the game write one. I read some of the comics and novels from the original trilogy and I really think it contributed to my impression of the series as a whole. Skipped Deception because I know it wasn't worth it.

Definitely think Mac should have given it a go over that mess Dietz threw together. Karpyshyn is back with BioWare that last time I looked into it (isn't working on MEA though) so I think he'd be a good choice when he's not working on his own stories (fat chance, obviously). I second the idea that the literature is pretty impressionable. The novels allow you to view the series through a different lens that you really can't get by just playing the games.

There were never enough stories and comics on events during the reaper war. I'd also want to see events like the skyllian blitz on paper................. but I dream.

Unfortunately I can't see any more media being set in the MW unless and until the games go back there. The best chance of that is if BW decides to do a reboot at some point down the track. The one exception would be a novel focusing on the AI (or some of its people) pre-launch. But the Protheans, First Contact War, Skyllian Blitz, etc? I think your only recourse there would be fan fiction, unfortunately.

Well the guy who's writing ME:A Uprising, he's written some pretty good books in his own sci fi universe. Ill def. give him a chance since I liked those: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WTIMZHW/ref=series_rw_dp_swThe dire earth cycle was pretty fun for me. I hope he does well with the ME book.

He's working on an "unnanounced project" at the studio right now and has been since he stopped doing SWTOR earlier in 2016. I'm thinking it's the new IP and then he'll probably write 3 novels for that and leave again lol

In terms of a reboot, if that ever happened i'd hope that BioWare would include some of these events in with DLC. On another note i've always wondered why such story lines weren't taken advantage of in ME3's multiplayer? Playing through those events with other gamers would have been amazing despite the fact we'd know the outcome ahead of time. Could you imagine, for example, playing as the Protheans during their final battles/moments against the Reapers, or as the Krogan when they joined the Rachni Wars? I would have gladly donated to a crowdfund to see these events added to MP.

I'm abysmally ignorant with respect to contemporary sci-fi authors, but one author whose technical writing (on UNIX & Networking related topics mostly) I absolutely adore is Michael W. Lucas, and he's a prolific sci-fi author as well -- the thing is, whatever he writes would respect the reader's intelligence, be consistent, interesting, and fun.

People already tied to ME/ME:A and BioWare in some way would definitely be my first choice being that they're already involved. Karpyshyn's work just left me with this nagging feeling that he and other writers for ME were sitting on a gold mine of information and ideas that we don't and probably never will know about. I've actually been meaning to give Hough's novels a read, but the list they're on is a little backed up at the moment.

He's working on an "unnanounced project" at the studio right now and has been since he stopped doing SWTOR earlier in 2016. I'm thinking it's the new IP and then he'll probably write 3 novels for that and leave again lol Either that or he'll agree to write a bunch of canon ME novels then leave half way through the process to write Destiny novels instead (I'm talking to you, Schlerf).

I think Schlerf is just an unofficial freelance writer at this point. He's been jumping from one thing to the next. He's not even at Bungie anymore according to his Linkedin
