Planet Scanning is mind-numbingly relaxing. I've fallen asleep doing it at least twice now and I know can't be the only one, surely.

This is part of why I feel it was a horrible addition to ME2! Everyone has different preferences. I didn't find it too bad at all. I just depleted one or two of the richest planets at a time and only in the same system I was already in after each mission. Focusing on the highest peaks, this usually amounted to only 10 probes at most per planet) and I always had enough of everything to process whatever upgrades came up as they came up. Also, as themikefest said, you really don't have to do any scanning at all to still get everyone to survive. Still, I do prefer the planet scanning system in ME3 to that of ME2. I think, though, that the surface scanning devise they showed is going to be the "drudge" in this game. I'd rather have a nice obvious red circle show up or make it glow like in ROTTR... so I don't have to hunt around too much for the various kinds of "loot" a game has to offer.

In their defense I actually liked planet scanning in ME2 as well. I thought there was something soothing and meditative about it with the music and the sense of scope as you browse through the map. I never did it too long at a time and I was on PC so I could move the cursor much faster than on consoles. Maybe that's why I didn't mind it too much. Same as with ME1's elevators. The one on the normandy and few others take 2-3 seconds on PC but on console they deliberately go at snail pace to mask a loading screen.

I'll have to store away everyone's assorted techniques, in case XBox One is someday my only option for playing the OT. I kind of wish that the scanning were passive. The Nomad could just alert us when something is near. I'm not sure if that's what you were suggesting, since I'm unfamiliar with that game. I think Tempest's orbital scanning is likely pretty basic, as is. In their defense I actually liked planet scanning in ME2 as well. The elevator aboard Normandy was definitely a bit slower than it probably should've been, but I thought they were much more immersive than loading screens. The removal of elevators was an example of BioWare being too quick to abandon their own good ideas in an effort to appease the vocal complainers. I like to think they've learned to be less knee-jerk, after all these many games and years.

I like to think they've learned to be less knee-jerk, after all these many games and years. Some sort of auto-alerting system on the Nomad would be nice. I was thinking more about the wrist device shown in the trailer. It's going to be a chore if we have to remember to activate it before walking through an area for it to tell us anything about what is in that area. In ROtTR, you had to activate Lara's vision for all the various collectible resources to glow, but at least then everything in that area would glow all at once so then you could just run around the area and collect everything. My favorite is still just the red circle's from ME2 that showed up automatically and could easily be seen even from across the room. However, I'm thinking that in ME:A we'll have to activate the wrist thing and then actually point it at an object before it will tell us whether that mineral or whatever is collectible or not. That's going to take more time and, as a result, I think it might get rather old rather quickly.

"Launching Probe". "Probe Launched".
I can hear the repetition in my head.

"Really commander?" "Probing Uranus." Every playthrough, first thing I'd do upon opening the galaxy map.

Ryder gets in the car. Drives 10 feet. Car vi says, scanning for materials. 10 feet later car vi says, item found. Ryder gets out of car. Takes item. Gets back in car. Drives 10 feet. Car vi says, item found. Ryder gets out of car. Takes item. Gets back in car. Drives 10 feet. Car vi says, item found. Ryder gets out of car. squadmate: What are you doing Ryder? Ryder: Quiet!.... Ok.....There. squadmate: Did you just remove the scanner from the car? Ryder: Sure did. I'll be damned if I'm going to get out every ********** few seconds to pick weeds or gather minerals squadmate: But the people on the Nexus need us to scan and gather materials. Ryder: They can kiss my a**. I'm not going to listen to that vi thing all day long. Now. Lets listen to some Ozzy while heading to the settlement that's a few miles away.

Hopefully, whatever the scanning system (i.e. on wrist or in Nomad), the system will show all collectibles within a large area... so that we can see and collect everything in a large area all at one time and then just forget about it altogether for a bit. As I said, I think it's going to be the surface scanning system that's going to become the drudge task... not the planetary scanning system (if they have one).

I just hope the minimap is cluttered with objective markers. To me that creates a really good sense of discovery and immersion. I just love checking boxes.

Then, shortly thereafter, his vision begins to blur as a deep ominous voice speaks to him "Shepard, I have assumed control of your form" and he slowly realizes he's indoctrinated. And thus every IT'er got the ending they always wanted. Congratulations!

“ Scanning is one of the most important exploration tools you’ll have in the game. [...] The scanner is a way to capture what is in your environment, send the information back to the Tempest to analyst it, and find those clues that we add to the codex, which might also give you access to crafting pieces, for example,” Condominas said. *sigh* And here I was hoping we had evolved past this...
