I first heard about mass effect when I bought it at gamestop as the third game in a buy two get one free sale. ironically I only played through half the first mission before it broke. I returned it and got the same game and loved it. That was 2011 I think. Game was awesome.
Can't wait for MEA

The first time I heard of Mass Effect was during a television trailer for the third game. Then I watched a review for the second game (and all I remembered from those were a space marine drinking green goo through his helmet and a little girl being disintegrated by massive robots).
Then a couple years later (2014) I finally bought an Xbox 360. After burning through all the games that came with it, I visited the local pawnshop. I had 60$ and I wanted to get something substantial for my money. I saw Mass Effect 1-3 and liked what I read on the case for the first one (building up a team & saving the Galaxy, exploration, customization and interactive story). So I bought all three, went home and played the first one for 15 hours straight. Then another 15 hours later I was done. Then ME:2 (then replayed ME:1-2 to fix some decisions), then ME:3. All and all it took me a month. Best series I have ever played. The setting, the story, the feeling of playing a movie, and most of all the amazing cast of characters.
Going in almost totally blind and experiencing all three games in such a short time really blew me away. ME:3's ending was really bittersweet for me (saved the Galaxy and made organics and synthetics one, just like Saren wanted, but my beloved Shepard... died).
But the saddest part of ME:3 was that Mass Effect was over for good. No more missions, no more running around the citadel, no more hanging out with the crew.
Then I googled up Mass Effect 4 and saw that first E3 trailer (the one with Casey Hudson), and thread upon thread of speculation. Three years later and here I am. Since E3 2016 we've learned more about the new Mass Effect than in the past 3 years combined. And now that it is a mere 72 days away, I am so excited, and a bit nervous. It's been such a long "journey" that has at times been SO FRUSTRATING, the delays, the information blackout, the departure of high level Bioware figures, and the fact that there is still so much we still don't know.
But mostly I am excited!!! This looks like the biggest, most ambitious, most "Mass Effect" of all the Mass Effect games so far. The exploration of ME1/DA3, the squad and loyalty missions of ME2, and the combat of ME3. And most of all the feeling of mystery and discovery that Mass Effect first had for me. It makes me giddy just thinking about it!
Sorry for wall of text. I am just really happy to finally get a new Mass Effect game after so long. Already pre-ordered, and soon I will have my time off from work booked. Almost ready.

The first time I heard of Mass Effect was from someone I was chatting with in an MMO. ME2 was coming out soon and they were talking about it this RPG. I said "A what?" They laughed. I tried it. At first I couldn't stand the WASD and mouse but I got that hang of it and fell in love with the game. I was inspired to play and like the DA series as well, but Mass Effect has my heart.

the first time I heard about ME was on another forum that I was on set up to support an X factor contestant believe it or not but we had things like off topic threads where we could discuss ou favourite TV shows and games and such and someone recommended Mass Effect to me. I was unsuer about it at first because I wasn't familiar with RPG's and had never rea;lly properly played one at that time. I had played briefly with Kotor I think as I had already got that but never really got that far as I didn't really understand what I was doing. I went away and watched a couple of vids of ME1 and 2 and decided I liked what I saw so took the plunge. Never regretted it for a secomnd and it's become my favourite game series I've ever played This was actually not that long befoer ME3 came out so thankfully I didn't have to wait that long for the trilogy's conclusion and it's actually not long after ME3 came out that I decided to go for the whol eexperience and get all the DLC's for the games. I'm glad I did as the whole experience is awesome. Hoping for moer of the same from MEA judging from what I've seen I don't think I'll be disappointed.

First i heard of ME was on group in the Messenger of people i knew from a RPG Maker forum about 5 years ago.I had a really crap PC for a long time and then i got a upgrade (nothing amazing, but it did allow me to play the then current games at low settings) and then they suggested me ME.
I remember that i actually wanted to start on the third one (that had just come out) because my PC finally could run a game that was from that year, but someone from that group really bugged me to play in order and i ended up delaying playing for months over all those other games i finally could play.
And then i played it and i almost literally devoured it. I was so entrenched with the story i didn't do almost any side mission (the suicide mission was sad), no dlc, play all three games at once pratically.
Was amazing, but at the same time, today, i feel like i barely enjoy it. The next time i played, i did it right. Side missions, dlc, readed the codex. Really became a part of that universe and then i really fell in love.
Since then i played 6 times total, and was mid 7th playthrough when my PC broke last june, i got a new one but haven't yet pick up that playthrough though i intend to end before March (let's face it, any other game i try to play after March 21 will be put aside)

I first got into Masseffect I think a lil bit before ME2 came out. Met and had great times with many ppl on the forums back then and it was a crazy time back then with all the ME2 and ME3 content. Through good times n bad but through it all it has been amazing and has made me actually a better person with writing and conveying my thoughts. Im sure Andromeda will be a great game and have amazing likable characters in it

I first heard about the Mass Effect series back in 2011, right after the original ending to ME3. I was playing WoW at the time and everyone was talking about this terrible ending to a BioWare game. So I went to the game store to see what was up. I saw this kinda generic looking space marine guy. Nothing on the box nor in any of the promotional stuff mentioned it was an RPG. They had clips of the game playing on the TV. I ended up thinking that BioWare had gone the route of the more traditional space marine FPS. I thought that Sheploo was your only option for your main character. My husband had the same impression and I promptly dismissed it. About two years later, the ToR forums had lead me to Dragon Age and eventually to the end of the original use of the BSN name. In early 2014, I started to hear more and more about the Mass Effect series. I had no idea you could play a woman. I didn't know about the LGB romances nor the dialogue options. I was surprised, but still a little turned off by the shooting mechanic. I was reassured by themikefest as well as by other posters that it was really easy for people not used to any shooting games. I'd started to see posts debating the endings, characters and everything else. A debate about Liara and Leliana made me decide to finally get the series. I wanted to know what all the fuss and passion was about. In case you guys are wondering, the debate was about who was the bigger Writer's Pet. I played and fell in love with the series. I finished it the first time in late May 2014. Two weeks later, I happened to get Denver Comic Con tickets from my dad as a wedding anniversary present. Unbeknownst to me, Kimberly Brooks (Ashley,) Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale were all going to be there doing a panel together. Talk about geeking out. I did the meet and greet thing and grabbed a signed Shepard pic and a photo with Mark. With Jennifer, I simply dashed up to the stage after the panel was over and told her that I'd been a fan of hers since Eternal Darkness. She offered her hand and thanked me with a huge smile. I've been hooked since. I got the N7 hoodie as a Valentine's Day present last year. I haven't had the chance to get back into PC gaming over the last year due to life changes and a new dog. I missed the series enough to where I ended up getting the trilogy for the PS3. I got everything all over again and I had a lot of fun playing again. I do miss mods, but the lack of them didn't diminish my enjoyment. It was as great and crazy and at times incredibly infuriating as it had been before. Dragon Age will always come before ME in my heart, but I'm really looking forward to Andromeda.

2009, Dragon Age was about to be released. They had an ad for it in the Jade Empire website (back then it was just Dragon Age, without "Origins"). I had been playing Fallout 3 for a long time and wanted to play something else. I went in with a "huh so Bioware made this, maybe I should try it". I knew Bioware from playing a lot of NWN at university and Jade Empire later.

On the topic of introductions to this wondrous science fiction universe, it all started for me in 2007, although an unconventional path lay ahead for me and Mass Effect.
I was working at a radio station at the time as an account manager, and one of my clients was EB Games (Gamestop's subsidiary here in New Zealand), they gifted the station a bunch of swag for key staff, giveaways on-air and a big console prize competition. I received on of these games and a PSP, and that game turned out to be Mass Effect for 360.
Being super busy at the time, I put about 3 hours into the game before getting sidetracked (I was casual AF back then) and unfortunately never touched the game again for 3 long Salarian-free years. Now it's late 2010, and I was working at an advertising agency, and whilst out with a gaming addicted client I was told about this game that "changed her life" (this was a few months after ME2 launched), she was a big gamer and knew I was starting to become one also, so she recommended me Mass Effect 2.
It just so happened I had a weeks leave coming up in a few days, so I randomly popped into my local game store and grabbed Read Dead Redemption (which I fully intended on playing first) and Mass Effect 2. I decided to check out some trailers for ME2 since I didn't know that much about the universe (it had been 3 years since my last foray into the first game) and if I recall correctly RDR was installing at the time on my 360.....and holy shit my friends, the first one I came across was that superb ME2 launch trailer...the music...the atmosphere....the feels!
I knew then, I had to hit that up first, so I went online to see if playing the first was necessary, which obviously it very much is...and the rest as they say, is history.... I played Mass Effect non-stop for 20 hours that first wonderful day/night...I just couldn't stop, and finished it the very next night (playing it on normal before I craved challenge from my RPG experiences). Then Mass Effect 2 hit.....I didn't think it could top the first game, oh how wrong I was...it was like gaming cocaine for the next 3-4 days, it was unbelievable.
Now, with about 8-9 full trilogy playthroughs under my belt (mostly on my cherished insanity difficulty) and a good handful of ME1+ME2 runs on top of that, we have ourselves a self-confessed Mass Effect addict, high on Biotic wind and snorting the hype filled Red Sand every day with glee.

That pretty much shows more context than all of our somewhat vague Andromeda trailers Crazy how much ME1 changed between there, the 2006 E3 trailer and then release: like a completely different game.

I always found these countdowns to be a bad idea haha... Think about waiting for something to happen. If you check your watch every 5 seconds, even a 5 minute wait will seem like a lifetime... Do something else, shift your attention to a different subject and even have fun and all of a sudden 70 days are gone Time is the same, perception of time is not, is what I'm saying lol...

Mass Effect was first game that I preordered. I bought Kotor used and fell in love, then bought Jade Empire. Found out about Mass Effect from some gaming magazine. Was like "Ok, BioWare, must have". Still remember when I landed on Eden Prime and was (don't remember why anymore) very disappointed and almost stopped playing. But when I reached Citadel, I was hooked. Now I have played trilogy more times that I even care to admit First time I did paragon male first and then renegade female. Now I'm middle of the Citadel dlc with renegade male on Xbox One and then it's time for end game. First I did paragon female run on Xone. Soon it's time to give Shepard well deserved rest and welcome Ryder.

This is from the X05 conference in 2005: Wow, I've never seen that. I think my favorite part is when the music gets all dramatic and we see... a geth! Then... a VOLUS! Also, is that supposed to be Shepard? Wow. (I wonder if there were any 'dudes be fugly' threads in any forums back then... ) Anyway, thanks for doing this, Sofa. Looking forward to seeing the rest of these!

Even looking at the ME1 box art shows you that the 'look' of the game wasn't nailed down until quite close to launch.

Sheesh... personal stories...
I am sure I heard about ME when it was first released, but I was at the time deep into modding older Bio games and NWN2, and then went off the grid because of the whole family expansion thing. I think at the time I did not really want it, because of the dialogue wheel and full voicing. And the fact that the character had the defined last name too... was too much for me after the freedom of the wild gaming of the BG to NWN2 era.
Then I broke my foot twice in the same year (2013) and the second time was in the middle of a crazy winter, so I was depressed out of my mind and was not recovering. So I loaded a save from. kOTor 2 game, finished it in a short order. Then wanted more Sci Fi games. On my old gaming/modding friends recommendation I tried SWTOR, but I bought the Trilogy as well when it went on one of those sales. Played SWTOR for almost three years, got tired of it, tried another MMO, and realized how much I cherish Bio's story-telling compared to the best Korea has to offer to the world, and finally started playing MET in the late summer 2016.
Awesome game, loved Shepard, loved the dialogue wheel, and by then, after SWTOR could not imagine a game w/o the full voicing. Oh, and totally loved how ME3MP coop mode married the best of the thrill of the pvp matches with the boss fights of the raids.
Still can't aim worth a zilch, but love MET to bits.

I remember looking at early screens of the original Mass Effect in some gaming magazine way back when. I remember thinking it was the most graphically advanced game I'd ever seen. Heh...

I was looking at BioWare's website trying to see if they were going to make a sequel to Jade Empire and I clicked on the Mass Effect link and read about it and thought it sounded cool and it was coming out on the Xbox 360 a console I wasn't exactly in a hurry to buy (as a general rule there has too be at least 3 games that I want to play before I'll buy a console Oblivion, Fable 2, and Mass Effect were the 3 that sold me on the Xbox 360) and when I heard that Bring Down the Sky was going to add more story content I finally bit the bullet and subscribed to Xbox Live and found so many games that I wanted to play from classics like UMK3, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, TMNT: The Arcade Game, X-Men: The Arcade Game, to some games like UNO, Gone Home, Shadow Complex, and Life is Strange: Season 1. Now I use my Xbox One to watch movies and TV shows that I want without having to pay DirecTV a ton of money for channels that I don't want just for a 5-6 shows I also love watching Youtube on my consoles (Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS4) which is a LOT more fun than watching on the actual website (if they let delete videos that I have no interest in on the app it would be damn near perfect) as well Netflix and Amazon Video.
Mass Effect also rekindled my love sci-fi and this lead me to finally finding shows like Farscape, Babylon 5, and Crusade and I bought and read the first 3 Mass Effect novels (I got all 5 of the Dragon Age only got through the first one and still reading The Calling). Mass Effect, along with The Transformers, helped me get back into comics after being away for 2 years from them.
So yeah I'm always looking forward to a new BioWare game regardless if it's Mass Effect: Andromeda, Dragon Age 4 or their new IP. And after years with only Dragon Age: Inquisition, Fallout 4, Transformers: Devastation, Life is Strange: Season 1, and Rise of the Tomb Raider as the only new games that aren't re-release of an older games from older generations that I was looking forward too I'm sort of excited for ME:A but I'm also trying to keep my expectations in check and not get over-hyped because that only leads to disappointment.
Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to get the money to pay $120 for deluxe editions for my Xbox One and PS4, and get the money to renew my PS+ for a year and Amazon Prime account.

My Mass Effect history is closely tied to my (relatively short) gaming history in general, so here goes: Unlike a lot of people in this forum, I'm not some lifelong gamer or RPG veteran or anything like that. I never owned a console or a computer good enough to play anything more than the most basic of games on as a kid (I grew up poor). The first 'real' game I ever played was Morrowind. Oblivion was out but my computer then couldn't handle it - probably a good thing since I eventually tried but disliked it. I think I was in my mid 20s? I totally loved it, and tried Baldur's Gate next. I was looking for anything with a good story my crap computer could actually play, and wanted to be able to play a female character. But I couldn't get into it. I didn't like the isometric view and also found it really hard - I didn't understand how to create a balanced party or use abilities well (Morrowind you can just hack and slash and fireball your way through for the most part) so I dropped it a few hours in. Got into horror games for a while since I love horror movies... but found myself itching to play an RPG like Morrowind again. Saw some positive reviews for Dragon Age: Origins and was intrigued by the cinematic bits and the companions and romance (because I loved travelling with my Morrowind mod boyfriend Julan!) and was totally blown away. I immediately wanted to play more games like it. DA2 had come out but had gotten some pretty bad reviews, but those same reviews kept mentioning Mass Effect. And while I wasn't too keen on the setting (I love sci-fi but tend to go for the more hard sci-fi/philosophical stuff - I'm probably the only person on this forum who doesn't like the more fantasy/adventure types like Star Wars and Star Trek typically), I liked that you could play a customizable female protag and was intrigued by the party system and romance like DAO had. My boyfriend owned the first two parts already and agreed I'd like it, so I gave it a shot. I now own all the games and all the DLC, and have played through them many times. I genuinely believed it was the end of the franchise, so when I heard about Andromeda last year I was absolutely stoked! And now, here I am

<sigh> you really do like these threads don't you Sofa? ... I love them maxon, because they are twitter friendly and allow us to reach out to people who used to visit BSN Prime, but since its closure don't know we are here. Granted, we don't want to end up too click-baity, such as '10 things you didn't know about Volus'... (although that might be good? )
