Are you telling me your headset is not perma-plugged into your rig? You know, you don't even have to press TAB to talk in the MP game? You can set it to constantly streaming your vocalizing with one easy click? Judging from the icons in the lobby, about 75-90% of folks have something plugged into the headset port. my mic doesnt work in the game for some reason. and it appears to be alot of players have the same issue and in fact yknow what was my experience of voice chat throughout ME3MP? Its either too quiet or a constant static sounds. Sorry to hear that. When folks do speak up, I usually hear them fairly clearly. But, yes, over the years I had troubles with every type of VoiP (I drew line at installing mumble, cause I had everything else, and literally every software needed to have settings spoon-fed and tested), so I could see how it could be the case. here is to hoping that they make VoiP better this time around. I still vote for improving VoiP over building in a chat interface as VoiP is gazillion times more useful as a team com-tool in the format. Chat is useful when you have someone with a vantage point & lotsa time to spare, like the guy guarding a node (I had a MMO-friend who was a god at directing the battle while guarding nodes through clear text) or in the death spawn, and when you do have lows during a match, but my experience with the ME3MP was that it is fairly short on locomotion, and low times. Anyway, cheers, and GL with the games so they make you wanna curse less and use the whole melee-as-a-clap-on- the shoulder more :)

I was advocating text chat before it was cool.
And yeah, I need me some text chat.

Just need a 'U suck noob!' text macro. Yes, and really we should macro all the action buttons to send the messages in chat: melee for F** u! 1 - for morons, 2 -for don't queue again, 3 - for l2p noob! That will nicely automate the convos. They can even randomize it to create different lively banters every time. True story, the 1st message I ever got from another player via Xbox was after my 2nd bronze match ever in ME3mp. It was short and to the point. "U R Terribad"

Text chat sure would be nice but unless they do it properly, it won't do that much good. And by doing it properly I mean including a system like Overwatch or Battlefield where there's a proper communication wheel to send quick messages, including proper short-cuts for each of them.
Preferably even with customizable messages but we're talking AAA here, so what sure won't happen...

Lack of chat in ME3 was a detriment at first, but it's also what forced me to start using voip and becoming less shy with random strangers on the internet. Yes, the ingame quality was very bad but at least it broke the ice for me (and also made me to speak very loud and clearly, which is another good thing).
Another good thing that comes with the absence of chat is also absence of toxicity, which there was exactly 0.0% in this community and was one of the reasons it always remained so friendly. Not that you would expect any toxicity from a pve coop game, but it can still happen and really ruin someone's mood.
I would still want to see lobby text chat in MEA, tough. Most players just don't use voip. And I don't see a reason not to have ingame text chat too, altough I'm really in favor of voip for every single situation. It would be also cool to have a command wheel like in Overwatch...
But then again, you could say that no text chat lobbies and games had a kind of charm in the ME3MP...

I didn't really miss it in ME3MP. As long as there is a toggle to disable it they can add all the text chats they like.

Maybe a in-game command wheel? For example: hold select and it brings up a menu with commands like
- Follow Me - Hold Position/Defend (Places a shield icon where ever the crosshairs are pointed) - Enemies Incoming (Places a red exclamation point where the crosshairs are pointed) - Cover Me - Thanks - Sorry
That way we can communicate with out worrying about typing fast (which is a hassle on Console) but still have teamwork.

DAI:MP had something like that, you could spam "Over here" when people were falling behind/not coming to the flag/trying to get a chest/not getting a chest room you wanted them to get.
Over here. Over here. Over here. Over here. Over here. Over here. Over here.

I'll never understand why they never opened up those doors... But it would be better for Mass Effect, if we had better commands. Saying "A victory worthy of the Legion" didn't help coordinate attacks/defend positions etc. I felt like the only turd in the group congratulating his teammates. Everyone else was just there to run around randomly, trying to get all the kills! I hope we get better teamwork in the next galaxy.

"A victory worthy of the Legion" The only acceptable use for this command is when all your teammates die within five seconds of each other.

Dunno about other folks, but I found it hard to find time to press tab to voice, let alone bring a convo wheel up and pick somethinge. Also, I can"t remember the last time I saw folks standing around in grim silence, waiting for someone to take a point and lead them towards a spawn. In fact I run out of adrenal modes trying not to arrive too late. When a player drops to do the device, the character already says Cover Me, the guy carrying the pizza has a big text sign saying Defend, and the moving probe continues to complain if not everyone is around. The only things not covered are social, and yeah, keybinds would be nice....

In general the only time I encounter text chat in ME3 is when it's being used to complain/insult someone.
I really don't think lack of text chat is a problem at all, let alone on the of the biggest problems.
As has been mentioned, you don't usually have time to sit and type during a match anyway.

they dont have to interact or talk. its not good to talk when youre gaming with strangers, its unsafe and some people want to relax rather than talk. its an easy game that doesnt require teamwork.

I like it when teams silently know what to do. Most people giving others orders are annoying, and often wrong. I think text chat is more likely to encourage negative interactions a la any youtube comments section. But I'm an old fart, so what do I know. Also, all you kids get off mah lawn!

Unreal Tournament '99 has general team text notifications that players can bind. Examples : Defend the Flag / Flag carrier / Base. Incoming. I need backup! MEAMP can use them too, especially for players with no mic. However, VoIP is still better for more refined communications.

"A victory worthy of the Legion" The only acceptable use for this command is when all your teammates die within five seconds of each other. Haha I know right? I hate it when that happens... stupid Collectors. Over here. Over here. Over he- Sorry I resist! I- I should probably just go, shouldn't I? Fine. I'm going.. Btw, that Cary Grant gif killed me! Maybe a in-game command wheel? For example: hold select and it brings up a menu with commands like - Follow Me - Hold Position/Defend (Places a shield icon where ever the crosshairs are pointed) - Enemies Incoming (Places a red exclamation point where the crosshairs are pointed) - Cover Me - Thanks - Sorry That way we can communicate with out worrying about typing fast ( which is a hassle on Console) but still have teamwork. The only things not covered are social, and yeah, keybinds would be nice.... I really don't need commands in this game (to be honest) but for us console players who don't have mics, or speak the same language. I figured, the wheel might be a quick way of communication with teammates. But you're completely correct. The characters already same things like "Cover Me" and "Geth Prime!" when they spot enemies. So even if they didn't add commands like this, I think it will still be a blast! But keybinds would be a nice feature for PC players!

So most people here seem to think that in-game chat isn't necessary and may be right BUT 1) Not everyone has a microphone - some people still use speakers. 2) Not everyone is alone in the room and can talk, some people play while other sleep around them. 3) It can be both fun and useful to type in a few words between rounds - not everything needs to be toxic. 4) 5) 6) There should be lobby text-chat at least, so I can tell people when I want to go take a leak or want to ask a question, or you know just say some joke and make new friends.
To be honest lack of text chat was one of the reasons why I quit playing me3 multiplayer mode. I never felt comfortable talking to strangers, especially in Europe where every country speaks its own language, and you can't understand jack shit of what anyone is saying, also combine that with 2)
And last but not least - I do prefer people talking shit in text chat rather than listening to their shit in my ears when I am trying to concentrate on the game.

Communication is very important in the higher levels....reflecting on ME3, gold is quite doable even in pugs if they do not talk, I generally do the objectives and if there is a problem I turn the mic on and make a suggestion inform them I need some firepower, most of the time they respond. Platinum I only role with friends and its almost critical that at least two be communicating and the rest if they do not have mic's follow. I would be a little concerned on text chats as it gets pretty hectic and not a lot of time for a player to park themselves to text, just my opinion.
The one thing I hope they have fixed is joining games that are in progress, I want the option to back out and not loose consumables, far to many newer players would start a gold match with one other player in hopes someone would come along and carry them, it's one of the reasons I stopped playing over two years ago as most friends had moved on to newer games.
