Remember giving thane a sniper rifle and having him rush the enemy. Or silly things like that. It always drove me insane how they would charge forward when they had a hail of bullets coming at them. Who thinks this will be the case again?

Squad AI will continue to do stupid things. I have no expectations that anyone will cement into place unless I specifically cement them into place behind some cover.

If Dragon Age Inquisiton is any indication, propbaly not. Range companions thought they were tanks lol. "Varric you have a crossbow for godsake move the hell back". Every time you'd move them they'd just move right back.

My ME:3 squadmates served me well. But as for ME:A who can say? Did see Liam score a tech combo (and kill a few bad guys) during the VGA demo. He also hauled ass out of the mechs blast radius. But then again, during the fight with the Fiend he charged right past its line of fire (then started dodging it's minions). So it looked like a mixed bag.
I will agree that DA3's npc's do not inspire confidence. At least in DA2 my mages would back down when confronted by a melee enemy. In DA3 I have to babysit all my mages/two handed warriors/rogues.
Anyone notice Peebee had over double the health & shields of Ryder at the CES trailer (the Asari in the pink hoodie has more health/shields than the human covered head-to-toe in body armor). Maybe that was for testing purposes (or they are giving squadmates superior endurance so that they are less fragile).

Every time you'd move them they'd just move right back. I remember just before DAI's release, when people were suspicious of the lack of tactical menu shown, and the devs tweeted that the AI was smart enough to not need it. Haha. Ha. I really, really hope squad commands are still in MEA.

I ended up switching him out for Vivienne because at least she could off-tank.

The mages stopped being a problem for me after I gave them fade step. Plus gave Dorian Kitty's Collar, when he did go down he was constantly reviving. See I could never leave Dorian out of the party. Walking Bomb + The fade touched with walking bomb on hit 100% weapon damage + Energy Barrage + ring of doubt made him ridiculously op. He always had WB exploding on enemies, they could never even get up since he could detonate WB's set by the fade touched material as well as his own lol.

I remember in ME2 Miranda would dance on top of crates instead of taking cover and Garrus would rush the enemy and collapse. Good times.
If MEA is going to have a run n gun style, I hope to whatever that the squad AI is up to it.

My biggest annoyance was when I was raining bullets on something and one of my squadmates would run straight into my line of fire without warning and then yell at me for hitting them. Like.... you literally ran into my bullets!! Don't yell at me!

If MEA is going to have a run n gun style, I hope to whatever that the squad AI is up to it. Yeah, I had some good times with ME2. Kasumi was probably my worst offender. She would shadow-strike someone then run around them like it was a dance party and get herself wiped out. I never really had much issue with ME3. I did kinda have that issue in ME1, but once you and your companions are high level, you're practically space gods that shrug gunfire like water off a duck's back.

Every time you'd move them they'd just move right back. Seriously! But I think it's because they downloaded my patterns since I had a habit of sticking close by with Sera and Varric so they could put enemies to sleep while everyone else smashed things to death. Maybe the AI thought since I could do it, they could too, lol.

Companions are just there to look pretty and make you feel less lonely. Don't expect anything else, so you won't be frustrated.

Companions are just there to look pretty and make you feel less lonely. Don't expect anything else, so you won't be frustrated. Don't forget to distract enemies so they aren't all firing at you in every battle. I never really concerned myself too much with the combat prowess of my companions, but then Mass Effect was usually pretty easy for the most part, with some rare exceptions where the difficulty curve might be strangely steep (Krogan battlemaster on Therum and Garrus' recruitment mission). If the Citadel DLC was any indication, it was that my Vanguard with energy drain equipped can take on the entire CAT6 team and the clone singlehanded, then take a trip to Cronos and fling Kai Leng off a space cliff then levitate home. In my campaign, Garrus and Liara were there to be good company and make the whole affair more upbeat, not fight.

Apparently you can't even give them direct orders so they're probably even more useless this time around.

Apparently you can't even give them direct orders so they're probably even more useless this time around. I'm really disappointed about that. Not only are we limited to 3 active powers, but we can't "borrow" our squadmates' powers to set up combos. That doesn't leave us with many tactical options

Fresh experience from the ME3 and I can confirm that the squadmates move so much better there than in Mass Effect 2 (even though I actually liked to play with Garrus and Thane with the snipers because I felt like they were the only ones who were always in the shadows, not in the middle of a fight as OP mentioned). To the topic: I can't stand the idea that again our companion is less protected by shields/ barriers and armory. The outfit Peebee wears is ridiculous. This is space exploration.

Who thinks this will be the case again? I had a similar thing with Miranda and while I appreciated her initiative, it always resulted with her getting killed From what we've seen in this trailer: At 3:21 Liam run toward the Hydra passing throught its body. At 3:49 if you slow down the video, you can see Peebee running and jumping awkwardly to then get killed some seconds later. Not sure if it's of any indication as I believe they said they did it on purpose because they wanted to focus on showing the combat. But if we no longer can't control and give orders to our team, I hope the AI is improved.

Pretty sure they're going to be as thick as a whale omelette again, as in the gameplay trailer they seemed to be running around in headless chicken mode. I only hope they have improved over DA:I where if a wild animal tripped on a stone the entire party would aggro & attempt to chase it across the map Just my opinion

Hopefully they can still set up combo triggers and strip shields as in previous games. I don't expect they'll be able to hit a barn door or do any actual damage, but Overload and Singularity or Warp would be great helps. Being able to root them in place reliably while I kill everything would be excellent.

Being able to root them in place reliably while I kill everything would be excellent. They can set up combos because they still have the powers to do so, but since you're not able to tell them exactly what to do anymore, I expect these "synergy combos" to be based more on luck.

I think they won't have brains yet. We'll have to do all the good work again. But that's not a problem for me.
