I always found stange the lack of variety and good styles in short hair in BioWare games. is, like, quite easy to find some ispiration, without having to go full anime style. Both for female and male characters. I think I have seen only in DA2 a decent pixie style. The hair in KotOR 2, released by Obsidian in December 2004, had better hair on its protagonists than we've had from BioWare in the years since. It's ridiculous, and they should feel embarrassed. I keep hoping they will feel so, at some point, and decide to finally lay this "BioWare can't do hair" thing to rest. I've been hoping for years. On the positive side, I'm glad to see this hair thread catch up with that other "hair thread" in page count. It's about time.

Bioware just needs to hire a hair specialist. That is their ONE job.

I honestly forgot about DA2. They did give a pretty solid effort in DA2. I remember being pretty pleased with a number of the styles for the female character in particular. Sort of the opposite of DAI, I had to decide which I liked best, rather than which I hated least. KotOR 2 seemed to have a some options well beyond those of its predecessor, but my mind could be failing me. And, as you said the textures were better. That's really the entire point. It's not the styles, it's the textures. The textures determine what we are actually seeing. KotOR 2 had moving hair, which some of the fans here comically get enthused about in the MEA trailer in 2016. Sigh. Damn it, BioWare, get your hair together. They make immersive, character-centric RPGs. You'd think they would see why we care about this. Hopefully, this is the game that lays it to rest. I've been saying that for years, so why not say it again?

DA2 did something right in that it took all of DA:O's hairs and then added more. No need to reinvent the wheel every game, just keep doing that. Of course, moving to a new engine means having to remake the textures etc., but the groundwork for the styles is already there.

I did like the hairstyles in DA2. At times the hair can be seen moving when femHawke moved her head.
DAI - no comment
I've posted before, that if Ryder is military, and looks like she/he is, the female can have her hair as long as possible. When on a mission, she has her hair tied up, and at times she will be wearing a helmet if needed. Just keep the hair off the collar and no loose strands in front of the face. So I don't see a problem with femRyder having her down in between missions. I've seen a lot of women in the military with long hair that had no problem keeping their hair tied in a bun. The way Ashley had her hair in ME1/2 was fine.
With the male, Shepard's default hairstyle was fine. I like it to be high and tight, but that's just the military in me talking.

Maybe better modelled (hopefully) from one iteration to the other, better textures, etc, but those should always be there. Plus, it was terrible for recurring charcters in DAI not having their old styles. What had me quite annoyed in DAI was not only the fact that most styles were similar, and with obviously male patterns (balding hairline etc) but how few were, and the refusal of letting the hair of secondary characters/companions being used for the protagonist. I would have loved Calpernia style, or Morrigan, or even Leliana's. I hate this habit of leaving the good styles only for the companions, and leaving the protagonsit, that should be the one the player like most, with the vanilla NPC hair.

FB3 engine may have a hard time doing good hair, but I don't see how that would account for the severe male pattern baldness styles, and so many of them.
I also don't care for the actual shape of the skull. The temples on all the characters-npc's, too, unless it's camouflaged by hair, looks concave. They dent in alot. Right at the temples it dents in severely, then the back of the skull flares out too much.
Ryder in the trailer looks better. She has decent hair which gives me hope. Her skull seems better proportioned.
But you never know until you get into that CC.

I like the hair catalog from The Sims. Already in DAI I wanted some hair styles from TS Medieval or The Sims 3 (Dragon Valley and so on) but the range of hair styles in DAI was weak. Well, now I wish for MEA that Bioware adds some hair styles from The Sims.

The way Ashley had her hair in ME1/2 was fine. I agree, and I've been suggesting for years that it would be great if we could have the option of having a "Mission" hairstyle as well as a "Casual" one that would switch itself accordingly, if you so chose. That would be an awesome addition. I got the idea after seeing Ashley's ME3 hair and thinking "I wish she had her ME1 do on mission but her ME3 do on the Normandy." Also, I guess it's worth saying that, if anything, I think protocol for hair and the like would either be about what it is now or more lax in the ME verse, so there's that. They don't even need a specialist. Just some random forumgoer would be a huge improvement DA2 did something right in that it took all of DA:O's hairs and then added more. I wish they remade, for instance, Alistair's hair. Not only would it have let him keep his iconic appearance, but it would have avoided him constantly reminding me of Cullen And it would have been a good option for the Inquisitor to have. Loghain has a similar problem because of the lack of long hair, and don't even get me started on what they did to Hawke Companions having styles we can't use bugs me so much, too! As does the default protagonist having features we can't use. We can use Varric's hair, so why not Josephine's, or Cullen's, or Blackwall's, etc? If it bothers the player, they can opt not to choose those styles.

If it bothers the player, they can opt not to choose those styles. Exactly! And for what is worth.... Maybe some people may WANT to have their character resemble companions. I know I would have liked, if I played a human, to make her similar to Cassandra. Or there can be roleplay reasons: I had my dwarf Inquisitor resemble Varric, becuse I liked to think they were from similar background and maybe unknowingly family, both clan had to leave Orzamarr, but one family had became merchants, the others had bad luck and became thugs. Having always the low quality styles possible irks me a lot. My character is the protagonist, s/he should be in my eyes, the eye of the player, the most iconic, the character that more is of my taste, the one who stand out... but no. I expecially hate when the presets have hair/beards etc. unique. I really, really hate this kind of situation. It always felt like I'm being punished for wanting my own character.

IIRC in Baldur's Gate if you picked a companion's portrait then the companion switched to using a different portrait. Maybe they should do this for hairstyles?
