I really like Velanna, she's the only companion in the entire franchise with whom I can be sarcastic and say things like "you are a shrill harpy." without getting disapproval.

When I left Velanna and Justice at the keep, I recall the epilogue said Justice was killed and Velanna mysteriously vanished. Seems like they were setting her up as the new host for DA2, although obviously that didn't happen in the end.

If you look it up in DA wiki, there are some links on articles and interviews about that.

^ Yep. IIRC they decided against it because Merrill was already there as the resident Dalish mage.

The companions in Awakening are a great bunch! I have a soft spot for Oghren since he was my friend in Origins(i trully dislike the approval dropping to zero, but oh,well.I guess it would have been hard to trasnfer his approval over from the main game). It is great seeing the hatching friendship with Nathaniel, whose father i had killed in order to extract revenge for the death of my own parents(totally deserved it). Sigrun has such a likable personality.I don't think anyone dislikes her! I really like the evolution of Anders from Awakening to DA2.He started like such a merry man,but his merging with Justice seems to have taken a toll on him later on.(It is most likely a retcon, but if it can be read this way ,who cares?) As for Justice,it is so interesting seeing him experiencing human emotions.I'd compare him to Cole. I wasn't that interested in Velanna initially but her banter exchanges are some of my favourite. She's adorable when she's so self concious about her clownish ears

As for Justice,it is so interesting seeing him experiencing human emotions.I'd compare him to Cole. I wasn't that interested in Velanna initially but her banter exchanges are some of my favourite. She's adorable when she's so self concious about her clownish ears Not a retcon, just watch his reactions (especially to the word: "apostate": he introduces himself as "Wanted Apostate" but he seems really hates this wording.):
He's very entertaining man in Awakening, but not a merry guy, he was sad and angry and sarcastic. His "flirt" with Mhairi, to me, an interesting moment. Maybe I'm wrong, but when Mhairi says "An Apostate at the Vigil's Keep?", he immediately stars flirting, routinely, at the moment when he considers Mhairi is a potential danger. Compare this with the conversation with Fenris: Fenris: "How have the Templars not killed you?"Anders: "I'm charming."Perhaps, this is just a joke, but I suppose Anders' survival tool was being a charming, funny, harmless guy, but he was rather bitter, but of course: when he finally freed by the Warden-Commander, he relieved. And in DA2? He doesn't need to be nice and charming anymore. This can be a relief! So: I don't think this is a retcon. ___ Justice is very interesting, he was my favourite in DAA (and I love Cole in DAI too). And his reactions in DA2 also very interesting. For example that "Justice doesn't approve of my obsession with you. He believes you are a distraction. It is one of the few things on which he and I disagree." Really? Never tried to prevent this (compare this, for example, Anders complaint, that Justice doesn't allow him to be drunk...), even if Hawke rival, and supports the Templars. Compare this, how curious was Justice about Kristoff's relationship with his wife... But this is also just an idea... And the question: Justice or Vengeance? Or inherently both? Remember, when he joins to the Warden's group, he picks a goal in the mortal world... and what is his goal: to revenge on the Darkspawns, because they killed Kristoff, and the others... And this is still justice. And my favourite group when Nathaniel speak about his brilliant idea:
