I'm not sure, really. With FIFA 17, which is not the greatest of examples, I was able to set English language as the standard language through simply changing my language settings in Origin. This might also be the case for Mass Effect, but I'm not too sure about that. That said, it would be really silly if you couldn't enjoy a game in English purely because of the region you live in. You could also order the game from amazon.co.uk or similar sites in order to make sure you get the English version, though this will mean you'll have to wait for a bit as delivery can take quite a while. I was trying hard to change language in Inquisition and I just gave up. I noticed that this problem applies to Mirror's Edge, BF1 and Titanfall 2 as well. Ordering the game from amazon would be the easiest solution, but I'm not willing to wait for delivery. Luckily I have a PS4, so playing the game with eng subtitles there won't be a problem, but I was expecting to play with unlocked framerate on PC with all my friends. Oh well, we can't have everything. What's the issue, Amazon doesn't guarantee delivery day of release in other countries? Also, I'm not clear on why it's an issue. You can only play the game in the language of the country you live in?

I think there was a free english language pack dlc for DAI. Maybe there will be one for MEA as well. Edit. added a picture. It only adds voice-over that already in game as it is. It doesn't change the text. huh ... I installed the language pack as well (as soon as it was available - shortly after release) and since then: ALL of the game is in English - the text as well...

I recall there was the same problem with DAI. I could access the English version by changing my language preference in Origin (I'm in Germany), but those from Russia couldn't. I don't know what the problem was, but I do know I wouldn't buy a game made by English-speaking developers at all if it wasn't available in its original language. Translations are nice to have available, but they're almost always inferior to the original, and don't get me started about the usually horrible voice acting, which is the main reason why I won't even consider a localized version these days if I can understand the original language reasonably well.
What's so hard about letting everyone play the game in the language they prefer?
As for MEA, I'm still undecided about buying it at all, but being forced to play in German would seal the decision.

Can 'language packs' be shared across installations? (It's obvious where I'm getting with this.)

Is there a reason you are against VPN? These days, VPN connections are just a matter of installing a program and running it. Especially with free VPN, you're vulnerable to 'man in the middle' attacks--basically eavesdropping on what you think are your safely tunneled communications with a 3rd party. Paid VPN has no technical advantages in this regard, but in case they decide to eavesdrop, and you find out, I suppose you would have someone to blame (?). A safer (IMHO) though maybe slower alternative is to use dynamic SSH tunneling (a SOCKS proxy). It requires having an account on a SSH server in whichever location you wish to appear; but the traffic is encrypted. The server could be set up by a friend, for example, who lives at the desired location. Setting up the SSH server is a little bit involved (much much easier on Linux & Mac compared to windows), so the person needs to know what they're doing. (creating a guest account, configuring sshd, and forwarding a port on the router). It's trivial to set up a connection to that server once it's up, though (on Linux and Mac, all you need is already available through the terminal; on windows, you need to get PuTTY, and then configure the proxy server through the control panel). Isn't that..illegal? I don't want to risk anything and honestly I have no knowledge in this matter.

I guess I can understand why people would be upset...as well as perplexed as to why the hell it would matter to Bioware/EA what the hell language people ordered their game in.

Has anyone been persecuted for watching Netflix over VPN? What kind of legal status do region locks have anyway? Am I breaking any laws when I order Region 2 DVDs from a Region 1 country, for instance? Is that a relevant example?

Also, I'm not clear on why it's an issue. You can only play the game in the language of the country you live in?Yes, exactly! RU\PL origin version comes with no option to change the language. If we're 'lucky' then they only force the text (which is all of the UI, subs, codex etc), but sometimes there's also a hard-locked VO (e.g. Battlefield 4, SW:battlefront). It's been like that since ME3. Steam normally locks the region using the IP, they have 'can buy' and 'can play' flags, but they don't mess with the content. It means that I can only buy& play where I live, I can't gift it into the other region. Origin can't do that. So they came up with the idea of locking away the 'cheaper' regions...which makes people from those regions buy from the English-speaking cheap-regions (Brazill, Mexico). As for DAI & its mysterious 'language packs' - they had only contained the VO. Some countries require 100% localization for the games, and that's what they had. People from France, Germany and (I htink) Italy could download the original VO as a free day-1-DLC, they already had an option to switch the texts. The easy way to make DAI English again had been found within a couple of weeks, once people had figured how those files worked.

I really hope there will be a possibility to switch between english and the native languages. I know some people don't think like that but german synchronisation for games (and anime) isn't the best (it is kind of stiff/unemotional -sometimes to the degree that you think someone is reading a book instead of talking in a conversation- and the translations are most of the time losely based on original texts & speeches). I play games mostly in english (to learn and to not forget the language).

Does it mean if I don't see a specifically stated warning about a region lock on the digital store page, I will get the normal international English version at least?

I'm sure that EU countries are not going to have any troubles. You'll get all your options. Russia\CIS + Poland are kinda 'special' this way. You should have a list of languages avaliable for your region on the MEA origin page. If you're buying from a 3rd party key seller - it's very likely to be the 'international' version.

Good voice actors are an extremely rare breed; and -- although this is changing now -- the dubbing technique they use (recording actors all by themselves in a booth, with no idea as to who they're talking to, what the environment is like) makes proper acting, even correct declamation an impossibility. So when people try to act it ends up being an exercise in painting badly written, meaningless text with a thick coat of fake emotion. Yuck. So I like the pedestrian style of German voiceovers.

It all depends on the budget, really. Same as with the movies. E.g. Disney normally can afford proper worldwide casting & recording. Smaller studios can't. Here's an example of what the real VO may look like there are 25(!) singers, and it feels like a seamless performance

So when people try to act it ends up being an exercise in painting badly written, meaningless text with a thick coat of fake emotion. Yuck. So I like the pedestrian style of German voiceovers. I can understand that. And it is always a mystery to me why voice actors don't get proper instructions or/and an indeep sight about the characters & the project they working on. Makes no sense at all - an actor studies his character as well and gets insight from writers & directors at a movie so that he can play the right way, right? Though they play the role not in physical form, voice actors transport a certain atmosphere into a game, movie or series. I liked german translations as well in my younger days, most of them aren't bad but if you hear english voice over or (for anime) the japanese - I personally - hear always a huge difference in the quality - except for movies and american sitcoms. Same for the acting - I'm not a big fan of most german actors - not all but most, because their acting feels weird to me, not that natural. But that is a question of personal taste. Like I said in my post above: other people might think differently about that and for me that is okay.

English cast has all that. Localization teams have much less time&money to do the job. Their primary objective is to make it cheap, make it as bug-free as possible and meet the deadline.
Sometimes it's decent (like Battlefield 4). Sometimes it's awful like Dishonored 2 (where Corvo&Emily are sometimes referred with the wrong gender... and I'm not sure I know what kind of weeds or chemicals can possibly turn 'Dreadful Wale' into 'Fallen House\Home'...Good thing that steam&bethesda allow us to pick the language.)

Hm... I recall that many Netflix users got around the region restrictions by using a VPN. This worked until Netflix made some internal changes.
My interest is the why EA would impose this. Is it strictly a sale issue? A language issue? A religious issue (romance options and Poland is right wing)? The game fails to comply with the local "decency" laws?
Companies like to sell their products to as many countries as they can. Normally, it's local laws/rules that prevent this.

I have no idea what could be the reason. Well, Poland is quite an intolerant country, but I don't think that's what this is about. It's frustrating that no one is trying to explain the situations, even EA employees are recommending getting the game on Amazon or from third party sellers.

Ok, I would understand if we didn't have language packs of some, let's say, 'exotic' languages, but why not ENGLISH, the original language of the game?? And it's only the case on Origin! btw, actually I have no idea but is it actually legal to buy international versions of the game if our country has a region block? I'm planning to buy MEA on cdkeys, but I don't want to have an account banned...

I still remember this monstrosity, which was ME2 with Polish dub.... Stuff of nightmares). But still, Polish subs for DAI were terrible - tons of mistakes, inconsistencies and constant confusion of the Inquisitor's gender (also Hawke's and Warden's).
